Vienna Secession glazed earthenware vase, Austria, ca. 1902

About the Item

A large octagonal green glazed earthenware vase with blue glazed squares, marked Austria and numbered 7143. These type of vases were made in the Vienna School of Applied Arts (Wiener Kunstgewerbeschule) in the surroundings of Josef Hoffmann. There have been several very similar vases over the years in auctions and sold by international galleries. Some documentation of a similar vase sold in 1983 by auctionhouse Christies has been added to the presentation for reference. This catalogue comes with the purchase of the vase. The piece is in very good condition, no chips, well marked underneath. An investment piece - Wiener Werkstätte objects are very sought after. Also a very decorative element in many different interior styles (classic and modern) Background information: The Vienna "Supreme School for the Applied Arts" opened in 1868. From 1875 to 1877, an adjacent new building for the arts and crafts school was built at Stubenring 3. In 1897 the management employed Otto Wagner, Koloman Moser, Josef Hoffmann and others in the arts and crafts school.
