Antique Coromandel Three Crystal Decanter Tantalus & Games Drawer 19th C
Located in London, GB
This is a superb antique Victorian coromandel, brass mounted and cased three decanter tantalus and games compendium, Circa 1880 in date. It was skillfully crafted in rare coromandel with cut brass mounts, three cut crystal glass decanters with stoppers, a mirrored back and a twin lidded compartment with a Bramah lock, opening to reveal a compartment containing five glasses. There is a secret base drawer with playing cards, cribbage board, dice and chips. It can be opened by pressing the disguised brass button which is just in front of the central decanter. It is a decorative piece which is also very practical, and would make a lovely gift. It is complete with the original working Bramah lock and key, which locks everything. Condition: In excellent condition having been beautifully cleaned polished and waxed in our workshops, please see photos for confirmation. Dimensions in cm: Height 33 cm x Width 38 cm x Depth 11 cm Dimensions in inches: Height 1 foot, 1 inch x Width 1 foot, 3 inches x Depth 4 inches Coromandel wood or Calamander wood is a valuable wood from India, Sri Lanka and South East Asia. It is of a hazel-brown color, with black stripes (or the other way about), very heavy and hard. It is also known as Macassar Ebony or variegated ebony and is closely related to genuine ebony, but is obtained from different species in the same genus; one of these is Diospyros quaesita Thwaites, from Sri Lanka. The name Calamander comes from the local sinhalese name, 'kalu-medhiriya', which means dark chamber; referring to the characteristic ebony black wood. Coromandel wood has been logged to extinction over the last 2 to 3 hundred years and is no longer available for new work in any quantity. Furniture in coromandel is so expensive and so well looked after that even recycling it is an unlikely source. A substitute, Macassar Ebony, has similar characteristics and to the untrained eye is nearly the same but it lacks the depth of colour seen in genuine Coromandel. Bramah is London's oldest security company. Established at 124 Piccadilly, London in 1784, and today based in Marylebone, London and Romford, Essex. Bramah made their first lock in 1784 and the patent was awarded in 1787. The designer was Joseph Bramah. Joseph Bramah was a leading inventor of the industrial revolution, patenting over 18 new ideas, including a new valve for the water closet (toilet), the hydraulic pump, a fountain pen, and a fire engine. Bramah also introduced a beer hand pump for use at the bar, to prevent fluid loss when barmen went downstairs to pour a new jug! Due to the quality of his manufacturing, his name became a by-word amongst British Engineers for engineering excellence and many of his inventions are on display in the Science Museum in London. You can find one of his original toilets still working in Osborne House, Queen Victoria's home on the Isle of Wight. The Bramah lock was unique and advanced property and valuables protection enormously. Indeed it was 50 years ahead of any Chubb lock...

Antique Knowles Taylor & Knowles Fish Trout Pike Serving Platter Iridescent 15"
Located in Dayton, OH
Late 19th - early 20th century semi-vitreous porcelain oval serving platter by Knowles, Taylor and Knowles. Features an iridescent orange border and transferware garland of roses around the images of a trout and a pike. "Knowles, Taylor & Knowles (KT&K) was a pottery company in East Liverpool, Ohio from 1854 to 1931. The original owners were: Issac Knowles, John Taylor, (Issac's son-in-law) and Homer Knowles (Issac's son). The pottery produced all types of wares from yellow ware, ironstone, and semi-vitreous dinnerware, but it is best known for the light-weight, translucent Lotus Ware. Produced mainly in the 1890s, Lotus was meant to compete with the successful Belleek porcelain made in Ireland. High cost and breakage forced K&TK to halt production of Lotus. KT&K is not to be confused with Knowles China of Newell, WV. Even though Edwin M. Knowles of Knowles China was the son of Issac, the two companies operated independently of each other. In 1929, KT&K merged with several other potteries to form the American China Corporation, but the company folded due to the Great Depression." (Source: Laurel...

Antique William Roger Quadruple Plate Sugar Bowl & Gorham Sterling Silver Spoons
Located in Dayton, OH
Antique turn of the century 13 piece sugar bowl and hanging spoon set, featuring a trophy urn style bowl with etched palm leaves on the body, brackets to support twelve sugar spoons, squirrels in the pierced handles and a sparrow shaped finial. Set includes 11 Gorham sterling silver demitasse spoons in the New Queens pattern (introduced 1895); sold by J.E. Caldwell & Co. Bowl and lid by William Rogers (cross and keystone mark, circa 1900-1910), design number 57. "Gorham Silver was founded in Providence, Rhode Island, in 1831 by Jabez Gorham, a master craftsman, in partnership with Henry L. Webster. The firm's chief product was spoons of coin silver, but also made thimbles, combs, jewelry, and other small items. In 1865, the Rhode Island legislature granted a charter in the name of Gorham Manufacturing Company. During the heyday of American silver manufacturing, approximately 1850–1940, Gorham was highly influential. The company has produced matching hollowware in both sterling and silverplate, as well as running a foundry for bronze sculpture. The White House has used Gorham silver services during many administrations including those of Lincoln, Grant, and George W. Bush. Gorham artisans also sculpted several famous statues housed in the Capitol's Rotunda, overlooking the Museum of Natural History in New York, and topping the Rhode Island State House. Gorham has also designed a number of elaborate trophies for sporting events, including the Borg-Warner Trophy for the Indianapolis 500, designed by Robert J. Hill. The company has changed hands multiple times beginning with Textron (1967), to Dansk International Designs (1989), to Brown-Forman Corporation (1991), to the Lenox Group (2005), to Clarion Capital Partners (2009), now operating under the name Lenox Corporation." "William Hazen Rogers (born May 13, 1801) was an American master silversmith and a pioneer in the silver-plate industry and whose work and name have survived to the present day. Rogers partnered with other silversmiths at times, and his company and trademarks were eventually taken over by larger companies. Rogers was born on a farm on May 13, 1801, to Sarah Reynolds (1777-?) and Asa Rogers (1798-1824). After he left home, he went on to become a silversmith, watchmaker and jeweler. From 1820 to 1825, Rogers was an apprentice to Joseph Church, a silversmith and watchmaker in Hartford. In 1825, Rogers became partners with Church and their company, Church & Rogers, initially manufactured silver-plate flatware and hollowware. He was also partner, from 1832 to 1838, with Asa Harris Rogers, his younger brother, as "A Rogers Jr. & Co." while still associated with Church & Rogers. Rogers – together with his two brothers and, later, his son – was responsible for more than 100 patterns of silver and silver-plated cutlery and serving dishes. Many of Roger's designs were influenced by Louis XIV-style patterns of the 17th and 18th century in France, and he was best known for his Elberon pattern and "Presidential" cutlery series. The companies in which one or more of the original...
