Vintage African Batik Wall Art, Hand Painted Textile Tapestry Wall Art

Located in Barrington, IL

Vintage Asian Batik hand painted fabric art. The beautiful batik is a depiction of a pair of Masai couples in traditional tribal clothing. The batik is a wonderful example of a hand painted wall art. Batik is one of many methodologies of fabric art in a long and rich folk textile tradition around the world. It is a wax-resist type of dyeing operation where certain sections of a textile are pigmented while others are tied-off and shielded from coloring. Batik designs are created in various geometric motifs that have certain symbolism and convey status within society, but now too they use batik methods to achieve what in essence are paintings on fabric. Dimensions: 26” x 31” Date of Manufacture: 3rd Quarter of the 1900s Place of Origin: Africa Material: Textile Condition: Wear consistent with age and use The Persian Knot Gallery, SKU: 2264 Vintage Batik Painting...

African Tribal Statue Osseyba or Reliquary Figure Kota Mohongwe Peoples Art
African Tribal Statue Osseyba or Reliquary Figure Kota Mohongwe Peoples Art

African Tribal Statue Osseyba or Reliquary Figure Kota Mohongwe Peoples Art

Located in Miami, FL

A fantastically hand-crafted piece by the Kota (or Bakota) tribe who are located in the northeastern region of Gabon. This figure, which is a Mahongwe reliquary figure as exhibited with its truncated almond-shaped face, is made of wound copper, hammered brass and wood. Reliquary figures were used as guardians to protect the revered bones of venerated family ancestors and leaders and ward off unwanted spirits. These figures are meant to embody intense powers and were also commonly used in communal rites and ritual performances. This particular piece came from an American collector who traveled the African continent and collected African artifacts for over 50 years. This piece has a beautiful, organically aged patina acquired naturally over time and use. It is mounted on a custom wooden display stand. We believe it dates back to the early to mid-1900s but could be older. We are listing as 20th century because we did not have it appraised. This African Tribal Statue Osseyba or Reliquary Figure Kota (Bakota) Mohongwe Peoples decorative art would clearly stand out as part of a collection or by itself in any setting. Truly unique, eye-catching and engaging. Dimensions on stand: 25 3/4" High, 7" Wide, 5 1/2" Deep Kota Reliquary...

Mexican Folk Art Wood Carving Traditional Dance Handmade Alebrije One of a Kind

By Manuel Cruz Prudencio, Ruby Fabian

Located in Queretaro, Queretaro

The young dancers wear an armor of threads over their bodies, showing off an ancient indigenous art form. Colorful thread combinations characterize the huipil dress, a rectangle of cloth handwoven on a backstrap loom that dates back thousands of years in used in Zapotec culture. Through symbols in their dresses, Zapotec women wear their identity, history, culture, power, social and marital status, religion, personality, and power. In this folkloric dance, “Flor de Piña” (Pineapple Flower), innocence surrounds young girls as they dance and hold pineapples on their shoulders as an offering. Their long braids represent purity and their bare feet symbolize their connection to the Earth. This folkloric dance is part of the “Guelaguetza” (name in the indigenous Zapotec language) Festival Celebration. Since pre-hispanic times, the indigenous people of Oaxaca have honored the goddess of maize with this festival, performing and offering gifts to ensure a good harvest. Husband and wife, master woodcarver Manuel Cruz and wood painter...
