Scandinavian Modern Table Lamps

SCANDINAVIAN MODERN STYLE

Scandinavian modernism is perhaps the warmest and most organic iteration of modernist design. The work of the designers associated with vintage Scandinavian modern furniture was founded on centuries-old beliefs in both quality craftsmanship and the ideal that beauty should enhance even the humblest accessories of daily life.

ORIGINS OF SCANDINAVIAN MODERN FURNITURE DESIGN

CHARACTERISTICS OF SCANDINAVIAN MODERN FURNITURE DESIGN

  • Bold, clean lines and simple, sturdy symmetries
  • Use of natural materials — native woods such as pine, ash and beech
  • Open, airy spaces
  • Promotion of functionality
  • Emphasis on craftsmanship; rooted in cabinetry profession and traditional construction techniques
  • Minimal ornamentation (little to no embellishment)
  • A neutral or light color palette owing to prominence of light woods

ICONIC SCANDINAVIAN MODERN FURNITURE DESIGNS

VINTAGE SCANDINAVIAN MODERN FURNITURE ON 1STDIBS

The gentle, organic contours that are typical of Scandinavian design appear in the furnishings and decor created by Danish, Finnish and Swedish designers not as a stylistic gesture, but rather as a practical, ergonomic — and, as importantly, elegant — response to the human form.

Each nation produced exceptional talents in all areas of the applied arts, yet each had its forté. Sweden was home to Greta Magnusson Grossman and Bruno Mathsson — creators of the classic Grasshopper lighting series and Berlin daybed, respectively — but the country excelled most notably at ceramics. In the 1920s at the great Gustavsberg porcelain manufactory, Wilhelm Kåge introduced pieces in the Scandinavian style based on influences from folklore to Cubism; his skills were passed on to his versatile and inspired pupils Berndt Friberg and Stig Lindberg.

Likewise, Finland produced a truly ingenious Scandinavian modern furniture designer in the architect Alvar Aalto, a master at melding function and artistic form in works like the Paimio chair, created in collaboration with his first wife, Aino. Yet Finnish glassware was pre-eminent, crafted in expressive, sculptural designs by Tapio Wirkkala and Timo Sarpaneva.

The Danes excelled at chairs. Hans Wegner and Arne Jacobsen were exemplars of the country’s facility with wood, particularly teak

Wegner created such iconic pieces as the Round chair and the Wishbone chair; Jacobsen — while the revolutionary architect and furniture innovator produced the best-selling plywood Ant chair — designed two classic upholstered pieces of the 1950s: the Swan chair and Egg chair. The list of great Danes could go on and on, including Finn Juhl, a stylistic maverick and maker of the bold Chieftain chair; Poul Kjaerholm, with his lean metal-and-rattan aesthetic; and Verner Panton, who introduced a vibrant Pop note into international design.

Today, decades after their heyday, the prolific, ever-evolving Scandinavian modernists continue to amaze and delight, and interior designers all over the world use their pieces to bring warmth to any given space.

On 1stDibs, you will note both instantly recognizable vintage Scandinavian modern chairs, sofas, rugs and tables — those that have earned iconic status over time — and many new discoveries.

Arne Jacobsen AJ Table 1957 in Ocher Yellow for Louis Poulsen
Located in Tilburg, NL
Arne Jacobsen AJ Table in Ocher Yellow for Louis Poulsen. Designed in 1957. New, current production. Arne Jacobsen designed the AJ Lamp for the SAS Royal Hotel in Copenhagen (Radisson Collection) in 1957. Today, the AJ family is regarded as the design that the Danish architect is best known for all over the world. At that time, the AJ family comprised a table and a floor lamp as well as a wall lamp, a small table lamp and a table lamp that was designed to attach to the table. The wall lamp could be found in beautiful rows in stainless steel in the lobby when the hotel was opened in 1960. In combination with the pendant AJ Royal, the AJ Lamp formed part of the overall design concept that Jacobsen created for the hotel. Arne Jacobsen did not just design the hotel down to the smallest detail for SAS (Scandinavian Airlines), he also designed almost all the hotel’s original furniture and utility items. The profile of the AJ Lamp with its straight lines and its combination of oblique and right angles is not only seen as a formal parallel to the profile of the Series 3300 seats, but also to the geometric profiles of his buildings. The AJ Lamp was used in several parts of the hotel, in copper and stainless steel. Furthermore, it was originally available in light grey, dark brown and black like the AJ Pendant...

Poul Henningsen PH 3½-2½ Glass Table in Black for Louis Poulsen
Located in Tilburg, NL
Poul Henningsen PH 3½-2½ glass table in black for Louis Poulsen. Designed in 1928. New, current production. The PH 3½-2½ glass Table lamp was designed in 1928 and is one of many advanced projects undertaken by Poul Henningsen in the development of his world-famous three-shade system from 1926. Poul Henningsen devoted most of his life to taming electric light. He based his three-shade design on a logarithmic spiral to make optimum use of the light source. He was constantly doing calculations and tests. The form of the shades was determined by the way they were required to shape and reflect the light, and the lamp was designed to be glare-free. The first PH Table lamp...

Curved Table Lamp Sculpture, Handcrafted in Ash Wood with Walnut Base
Located in Southampton, MA
A table lamp that is also a sculpture will draw attention to a corner in your living room. It will bring new life to your dining room while setting a cozy mood. The light ash wood has interesting, bold grain. The base is a beautiful piece of dark walnut, that contrasts with the curvilinear form of the lamp. Our Bent Table Lamp is the eye-catching piece missing from your living room. An accent light with a unique flair. Bold in ash, ebonized white oak or walnut. The curvilinear form is bent lamination, made of five thin layers of wood glued together. A striking and strong piece with a light, wonderful feel. The twisted cloth cord is a statement on its own weaving through the curved form. The cord is a two strand twisted high quality cloth cord in a gunmetal gray. The lamp is accented with brass components. All woods are finished with a wiping varnish that deepens the wood and protects it. The shade is offered in a choice of Japanese kozo mulberry papers. Cream colored with natural mulberry bark chips and fibers or strands of beautiful silky fiber on an off-white paper. Wired for US 110...
