Bisquit Porcelain and Gilt Bronze Figural Clock of Perseus Freeing Andromeda
Bisquit Porcelain and Gilt Bronze Figural Clock of Perseus Freeing Andromeda

Bisquit Porcelain and Gilt Bronze Figural Clock of Perseus Freeing Andromeda

By Francois Ageron

Located in Vancouver, British Columbia

A fine and rare Bisquit porcelain and gilt bronze Louis XV figural clock f depicting a famous scene in Greek Mythology of Perseus freeing Andromeda. The clock case is made of Bisquit (unglazed) porcelain. The figural group is presented on a rocky outcrop with waves lapping at their feet. She is shown lying over the clock dial with one leg and one arm chained to a rock behind her. Perseus leans agains the other side of the dial reaching to untie Andromeda from the rock behind her. Medusa's severed head is shown at his feet. The base is decorated with a gilt bronze frieze across the front showing cupids playing with stars and sun rays. The rounded sides of the clock are also decorated with gilded panels. The case sits on six toupie feet. The 6.5" white enamel dial is signed Ageron at the top and Paris at the bottom. The dial has Roman numerals with enamelled stars between the numerals; the hands are pierced and gilded. There is also a subsidiary steel hand pointing to the days of the month. The silk string suspension system has been replaced with a steel suspension system. The clock rings the hours and halfs on a bell. The movement for this magnificent clock was made by François Ageron (d. after 1783), who was one of the leading 18th century Parisian clockmakers. Ageron’s establishment was famous and known for his horological genius he created both clocks and watches, many of which had complicated movements. He was born at Arbigny and was received as a Parisian maître-horloger in 1741, at which date he was established at Place du Pont Saint-Michel. By 1747 he had moved to Quai des Augustins, five years later he was at rue Saint-Louis au Palais and then in 1763 at place Dauphine. Like other great clockmakers of the period he used cases by the finest bronziers notably Philippe and Jacques Caffiéri, Jean-Joseph de Saint-Germain, Robert and Jean-Baptiste Osmond, Jacques Dumont...

Quinta Nova 43-Piece Floral Porcelain Dinnerware Set, Portugal, 1960s

By Vista Alegre

Located in Valladolid, ES

Gorgeous porcelain tableware from the Portuguese firm Quinta Nova, renowned for its fine porcelain. Its meticulously painted floral design combines warm tones of orange and green on a pearly white background, evoking a romantic yet contemporary touch. The edges of the pieces feature a wavy shape with a fine gold trim, enhancing their decorative character. The floral ornamentation, with intertwined branches and flowers in full bloom, recalls 19th-century botanical motifs, inspired by Rococo art and Victorian design. The balance between the gold details and the softness of the floral brushstrokes make this tableware ideal for a more classic decor style or a more modern setting. Stamped on the base of each piece. Quinta Nova Porcelain, now Vista Alegre Quinta Nova Porcelain was a Portuguese brand...

Johnson Bros Happy England Porcelain Dinnerware Set, 81 pieces, Johnson Bros

By Johnson Brothers

Located in Valladolid, ES

Exceptional 81-piece dinnerware set from the renowned English firm Johnson Bros., featuring a 1940s design, "Happy England." Each piece has a scalloped border, a white background, and an elegant and striking rural landscape design. The stamp on the back reads "Happy England, Made in England by Johnson Bros. A genuine hand-engraved, all decoration under the glaze, detergent & acid-resistant color pat n. 190 093. Ironstone." (“Happy England, made in England by Johnson Bros. A genuine hand-engraved design, all decoration under the glaze, resistant to detergent and acid, patent no. 190,093. Ironstone.”) It is precisely this material, known as semi-porcelain or ironstone, that earned the company its special recognition. It combines the elegance of fine porcelain with great durability, making it ideal for everyday use. The transferware technique, or glaze transfer, refers to the design being printed onto the ceramic before firing, guaranteeing precise and repeatable details. Johnson Brothers (1883–2015) Johnson Brothers was a British manufacturer and exporter of tableware, known for its early introduction of “semi-porcelain” tableware. It was one of Staffordshire's most successful potteries, producing tableware, much of which was exported to the United States from the 1890s to the 1960s. They were also major manufacturers of large-format bathroom ceramics. Some of their designs, such as "Eternal Beau," "Dawn," "Old Britain Castles...

Chinese Blue and White Porcelain Vase from Modern Official Kiln
Chinese Blue and White Porcelain Vase from Modern Official Kiln

Chinese Blue and White Porcelain Vase from Modern Official Kiln

Located in Atlanta, GA

Dubbed as production of the "Chinese Modern Official Kiln", a small group of porcelains of the highest standard were produced in Jingdezhen from 1962-1967, The production was aimed as a revival of the Chinese porcelain after the foundation of the Republic in 1949 in order to serve the purpose of decorating the meeting halls for the newly renewed diplomatic relations around the globe. The best available materials and artists, including the painters and potters, were employed to achieve a high quality that rivaled the pieces produced during the pinnacle years in the porcelain production in the previous Qing dynasty. Due to the breakout of the Cultural Revolution, most of the pieces failed to be used as intended. Most if not all signatures, such as found on this vase, were added later as a hallmark to distinguish them. "Zhong Nai Hai Huai Ren Tang Treasures Porcelain Research Bureau year of 1962". Zhong Nai Hai is the residential and working compound for Chinese political elites in Beijing and Huai Ren Hall being an important meeting hall. The pieces from "Modern Official Kiln" ubiquitously showcase perfectly balanced forms with precision in symmetry. The use of very high quality Gaolin clay resulted in a semi translucent body, often quite thinly potted. The superbly underglaze paint were sandwiched between a pre-applied glaze and then an overglaze, and the elaborate designs were drawn by master painters. Often, there is a hidden red Chinese National Emblem on the interior wall. These features were all well reflected in this piece. The decoration of the blue paint on the vase is of a classic regal composition and the cobalt blue is of a vivid radiating color. Blooming peonies, an old laurel tree with blossom and scholar rocks provide the background and anchor for a pair of pheasants. One raises its head to crow while the other one looks down. These motifs are commonly found in classic Chinese scroll paintings, a genre called "Flower and Bird Painting". On the back of the vase, there are Chairman Mao's head portrait watermarked in the glaze as well as a cursive poem with a collection number as shown. For a pair of blue and white vase of the same production, see sale by Singapore International Auction PTE ltd on July 21st, 2019 lot 2014. For a pair of blue and white urns...

Antique and Vintage Porcelain Decorative Objects, Tableware, Dinner Plates and Other Furniture for Sale

While it is tempting to store your antique and vintage porcelain decorative objects and other items behind closed glass cabinet doors and reserve them only for display, your porcelain dinner plates and serving platters can safely weather the “dangers” of the dining room and be used during meals. So go ahead and dress up your dining table for a special meal with a range of porcelain tableware, platters and tea service from 1stDibs.

Porcelain, a durable and nonporous kind of pottery made from clay and stone, was first made in China and spread across the world owing to the trade routes to the Far East established by Dutch and Portuguese merchants. Given its origin, English speakers called porcelain “fine china,” an expression you still might hear today. "Fine" indeed — for over a thousand years, it has been a highly sought-after material.

Porcelain is not totally clumsy-guest-proof, but it is surprisingly durable and easy to clean. Its low permeability and hardness have rendered porcelain wares a staple in kitchens and dining rooms as well as a common material for bathroom sinks and dental veneers.

Meissen Porcelain, one of the first factories to create real porcelain outside Asia, popularized figurine centerpieces during the 18th century in Germany, while works by Capodimonte, a porcelain factory in Italy, are synonymous with flowers and notoriously hard to come by. Elsewhere, Denmark’s Royal Copenhagen first made dinnerware and vases with blue-and-white motifs inspired by Chinese porcelain. Hungarian brand Herend favors large, bold designs for its porcelain, with its serving pieces, dishes and other works incorporating historical scenes, animals or vegetation.

Modern porcelain houses such as Maison Fragile of Limoges, France — long a hub of private porcelain manufacturing — keep the city’s long tradition alive while collaborating with venturesome contemporary artists such as illustrator Jean-Michel Tixier.

Add different textures and colors to your table with dinner plates and pitchers of ceramic and silver or a porcelain lidded tureen, a serving dish with side handles that is often used for soups. Although porcelain and ceramic are both made in a kiln, porcelain is made with more refined clay and is stronger than ceramic because it is denser.
