Louis Mendez: August 7, 1929 - July 27, 2012 Louis Mendez was born on the Lower East Side of Manhattan of Puerto Rican, Spanish and Irish heritage. He spent his early years in Spanish Harlem, where his family owned a restaurant at 108th and Madison. In the mid-1930s, his family sold the business and moved to Goshen, NY, where his high school teachers recognized his unusual talent in drawing and sculpture. Louis went on to earn BFA ('52) and MFA ('54) degrees from the New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University. His years there were deeply formative, as he became a protégé and friend of Professors Charles Harder and Daniel Rhodes, influential authors and among the mid-century leaders of the American studio ceramics movement. Unusual vintage majolica vase with complex glaze in dark Bordeau oxblood red and various shades of grey colors features bands of applied reliefs in shape of abstract, graphic flowers. Top and bottom parts of the vase and bands of relief decor are decorated with gold. Monochromatic white glaze was used on inner surfaces, accentuating the palest grey shades in the main glaze. The vase is signed on the bottom with model number and "Italy"; while it does not have the usual the manufacturer's mark, "FF", the glaze that was used for this series is well documented to Fratelli Fanciullacci. It was common for Italian ceramics manufacturers to omit marking their pieces with their logos if the they were intended for American or European distributors; instead, they would only mark it "Italy" to allow the distributor to use their stickers, or rarely, they would mark the piece with "studio tame" for "distributor name" if the distributor did not object. Pieces from this particular series were made by Fratelli Fanciullacci with their own mark, for Ebeling Reuss...

Striking ceramic Neo-Renaissance Rubboli pitcher vase features cobalt, red and gold Lustre majolica glaze decoration. Hand-painted decor follows the traditional shape of the piece, with abstract pattern accentuating the base and the top of the vase, and motifs of mythical beasts surrounding central medallion with another mythical creature. The vase is marked on the bottom; the mark "A.R. Italy" dates the piece to 1936-1975. We are offering a large sculptural vase, decorated n the same style, also by Alberto Rubboli, in a separate listing; the vases can be displayed together for a stunning presentation. The vase is a striking example of the revival of the magnificent Italian Renaissance decoration of the 16th century. In late 19th century the collecting craze for Renaissance majolica, especially lusterware, prompted the Italian potters to hunt for the secret formulas that were lost four hundred years earlier.
