The vintage porcelain or ceramic dove figurines feature finely detailed bodies, artfully hand painted with light green accents on bright white majolica glaze, creating a reserved, natural color palette of white and tone-on-tone green.
The birds are realistically sculpted with wide, flowing tails, standing calmly with their heads slightly turned. They are not mirror images of each other; each presents subtle differences in posture, adding visual interest and another layer of complexity to the set. Highly detailed figurines convey a touch of historical elegance and whimsical charm of traditional Italian country style. Each sculpture is marked with ITALY and model numbers on the inner surfaces. While many Italian artists and studios created their version of dove figurine, most of them are stylistically different from this pair; Bitossi and Zaccagnini birds have more streamlined, Modernist silhouettes, and the doves created for Raymor were less detailed and intentionally less realistic, as well as most often marked with distributor name in writing. We're attributing the pair to Mottahedeh, who sourced Italian majolica in similar style; the pieces will be simply marked ITALY and Mottahedeh will add their paper stickers. As the sculptures are quite old, the stickers often get lost or destroyed.
The convenient size and small footprint allows the set to be used in a multiple ways, such as dining room centerpiece, console table accent, shelf or fireplace mantel decoration...

An absolutely beautiful and extremely rare Shigarakai Yaki Ware Chawan tea bowl / Yunomi cup by famed Japanese Hawaiian American pottery master Toshiko Takaezu. The work features a gorgeous dripped glaze over a anagama kiln fired Shigaraki clay body. It is a unique and one-of-a-kind work with a very Wabi-Sabi feel to it.
The piece is signed on the base with her traditional "TT" mark / monogram.
Shigaraki Ware pottery comes from Shiga Prefecture, Japan. The kiln there is one of six ancient kilns in Japan (along with Echizen ware, Seto ware, Bizen ware, Tamba ware, and Tokoname ware).
In 1993, Toshiko was invited to Japan by Shiro Otani to work with the quartz rich clay and local artists/potters at the Shigaraki Ceramic Cultural Park. In 1995 she made the journey there to work in master Japanese ceramicist Shiho Kanzaki's studio in Shigaraki,. We believe this work was likely created at this time. It appears few pieces that she made during this particular visit exists today as we have only seen one other work - another Chawan - that she created during this trip (The works were fired in Kanzaki's anagama kiln in February 1996 and subsequently shipped back to Toshiko in New Jersey).
This particular work also encompasses the Japanese Wabi-Sabi aesthetic - the appreciation of beauty that is imperfect, impermanent, and incomplete in nature and embraces the principles of asymmetry, roughness, simplicity, economy, austerity, modesty, intimacy, and the appreciation of both natural objects and the forces of nature upon them.
Would be a great addition to any collectors of Toshiko's work or Japanese/Hawaiian pottery...

Henri Delcourt Pair of Art Deco Faience Tulipiere Vases, France 1910s-1930s

Vintage or antique pair of ceramic multi spout tulipiere vases features Art Deco style form with one larger central spout, surrounded by 4 shorter and smaller spouts and mounted on flattened rounded body with columnar stepped foot. The vases are decorated in striking drip glaze, reminiscent of modernist Western European art pottery pieces of the period; buttery yellow, caramel brown, turquoise blue, celadon green, cobalt blue, and dark brown colors flow over the vases' surfaces, creating an organic, modern, almost impressionistic composition.
The vases are marked with the hand-written matching model/decor numbers, studio logo, and FRANCE on the bottoms; one of the vases still has the remnants of the paper sticker attached. Delcourt sold his artistic, high-end pieces through the studios at department stores, such as Primavera at Au Printemps and La Maîtrise at Galeries Lafayette, as well as other upscale stores in France, but we were unable to identify which store the sticker belongs to.
Sculptural, decorative set with elegant form, bold, artistic glaze, and exceptional craftsmanship will make a great gift to a collector or design enthusiast and a perfect addition to a wide range of interiors, from Traditional to Art Deco, Eclectic, Art Nouveau, Arts and Crafts, Organic Modern, Mid Century Moden, Collected, or Contemporary.
Henry Delcourt pottery was founded in 1903 by Jules Verlingue; in 1913 Verlingue partnered with Henri Delcourt, and in 1914 - acquired the HB Quimper pottery. Another chance in ownership happened around 1918, when the Manufacture de la Grande Maison HB, J. Verlingue and Co. was divided; Verlingue sold his shares in the company of Boulogne-sur-Mer to Delcourt, receiving Delcourt's shares of Quimper in return. The previous ties to Quimper pottery help to explain some stylistic similarities between the souvenir and tourist-oriented pieces, made by Delcourt pottery, and those of HB Quimper, but Delcourt's high-end, modern, more unique art pottery and ceramic pieces appear to be independent from the Quimper influence.
