The striking vintage studio pottery ceramic vase is decorated with crystalline glaze in contrasting blue and mustard yellow colors. The vase was hand thrown on a wheel; blue color crystals on ombre colored base, shifting from ligher shade of yellow on top to deep mustard yellow on the bottom, were grown in a kiln during a very long, controlled firing. Each crystalline piece is unique due to the nature of the glaze. The vase was allowed to develop an abundance of distinct, graphic crystals, creating a free-flowing abstract pattern and adding rich texture to the minimally shaped piece. This is a very rare ironstone vase, in the Chinese style, all hand painted in the coloured dragon pattern, made by the Mason's factory in the early 19th century. Both the vase shape and the pattern are very rare. The vase has a bottle shape with a fairly tall neck, having two dolphin head handles, with attached loops. (NOTES ON SHAPE This vase style is a copy of a much earlier Chinese bronze vase shape produced in the Ming, Hongwu period of 1368 - 1398, which had similar decorative animal head side handles with loops. ( See the book Chinese Ceramics by He Li, page 216, published by Thames & Hudson. ). Also On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 204; The square handles and rings illustrate the metal origins of the shape of the vase. Similar examples have been excavated in Chinese tombs dating to the fifteenth and sixteenth century, suggesting that the shape was particularly popular at that time.) E27 socket - can be used both with 220/240 V or 110/150 V bulbs Louis Christiaan Kalff (14 November 1897 in Amsterdam - 16 September 1976 in Waalre) was a Dutch designer. After graduating from secondary school, Kalff studied at the Quellinus School in Amsterdam (now the Gerrit Rietveld Academie) and at the Technical University of Delft. Between 1925 and 1926, together with Jan Hanrath, Kalff designed the building of the Delft Student Rowing Association (D.S.R.V. Laga) in the style of the Amsterdam School. In 1925, Kalff joined the Philips advertising department. Under his direction, the Lighting Advice Bureau (LIBU) was established in 1929. He designed the Philips logo and participated in the World Expositions in Barcelona, Antwerp, Brussels and Paris. He also designed posters and printed advertisements for the Holland-America Line, the Calvé company, the seaside resort of Scheveningen and Holland Radio. He also designed book covers. Kalff also worked for Philips as an architect on buildings such as the Dr A.F. Philips Observatory in Eindhoven (1937), the Diamond Court in Valkenswaard (1948) and several country houses for Philips directors in Eindhoven and Waalre.
