Apulian Greek Red-Figure Lekythos with Maenad
Apulian Greek Red-Figure Lekythos with Maenad

Apulian Greek Red-Figure Lekythos with Maenad

Located in London, GB

This charming Greek black glazed small jug is decorated in red-figure techniques with a draped maenad running to the right, holding a wreath and a phiale, a large palmette with scrolling on the reverse beneath the handle, strokes at the neck, with applied white painted detail. The form of a squat lekythos features a distinctive rounded belly, a flat base, and a narrow neck with a loop handle, they were primarily used for holding oils. The feminine subject of this example indicates it was likely used for perfumed oils. Provenance: Richard Tully, New York, acquired at Parke Bernet Sotheby’s New York, 10 December 1999, lot 367 American private collection, acquired from the above Hindman, Chicago, 16 April 2019, lot 166 Greek cities along the coasts of southern Italy and Sicily regularly imported their fine ware from Athens but by the end of the 5th century BC they were acquiring red-figured pottery of local manufacture. As many of the craftsmen were trained immigrants from Athens, these early South Italian vases were closely modelled after Attic prototypes in both shape and design. The ancient Greek colony of Taras (modern Taranto, Italy) was the primary production centre for Apulian vases...

Jasba Aztec Exotica Set of 3 Vases, West German Pottery 1960s

Jasba Aztec Exotica Set of 3 Vases, West German Pottery 1960s

By Jasba Keramik, West German Pottery, Jasba

Located in Clifton Springs, NY

The set of 3 vintage Jasba Keramik vases from the 'Aztec' and 'Mexiko' or 'Maya Tiki' lines of their Exotica series features relief decor, influenced by ancient Pre-Columbian civilizations. The sculptural vases in the set interpret traditional vessel forms like a pitcher in a contemporary vein while referencing Pre-Columbian art with an eclectic twist. The vases are decorated with tone-on-tone ochre brown matte glazes on the outer surfaces and semi-matte black glazes on inner surfaces, allowing the complex reliefs to dominate the composition. The vases feature a central wide band of brutalist, rhythmically spaced mythic animals, derived from archaeology or from a wide range of Folk Art sources. The handles are interpreted not as functional parts of the design, but as an important aesthetic feature that was commonly used by West German pottery designers and artists in context of Krug Vase (Jug Vase, or Handled Vase) for their expressive possibilities. In this set, the small handles on two Aztec vases...

Antique Art Nouveau Delphin Massier Vallauris Iridescent Pottery Centerpiece
Antique Art Nouveau Delphin Massier Vallauris Iridescent Pottery Centerpiece

Antique Art Nouveau Delphin Massier Vallauris Iridescent Pottery Centerpiece

A fine French art pottery centerpiece. By Delphin Massier in Vallauris. Created ca. 1900. Depicting 3 conjoined maidens cradling their faces with their dresses flowing into a wide trefoil undulating base. Marked to the base. (Perhaps a depiction of the goddess Hecate.) There is evidence of an old professional repairs. We note overpaint to sections of the figures and base. Not noted on the underside. (We're not sure what the extent of the repairs were. Given the lack of evidence of repair on the underside, we think it may have been chips or flakes to the top.) In any case, it displays very nicely. Simply wonderful French Art Nouveau design! Date: ca. 1900 Overall Condition: It is in overall fair, as-pictured, used estate condition with no chips or cracks. Condition Details: There is evidence of an old professional repairs. We note overpaint to sections of the figures and base. Not noted on the underside. (We're not sure what the extent of the repairs were. Given the lack of evidence of repair on the underside, we think it may have been chips or flakes to the top.) Otherwise, there is some crazing throughout, some light fritting or glaze loss around the edges of the base, some light scratches to the overpaint, and some bubbling and roughness in the glaze that appears to be a firing flaw around the edges. Otherwise, there are some fine & light surface scratches and other signs of expected light wear consistent with age. Maker: Delphin Massier Marks: Marked to the base for Delphin Massier Vallauris...
