Art Deco Sofas

ART DECO STYLE

Art Deco furniture is characterized by its celebration of modern life. More than its emphasis on natural wood grains and focus on traditional craftsmanship, vintage Art Deco dining chairs, tables, desks, cabinets and other furniture — which typically refers to pieces produced during the 1920s and 1930s — is an ode to the glamour of the “Roaring Twenties.”

ORIGINS OF ART DECO FURNITURE DESIGN

CHARACTERISTICS OF ART DECO FURNITURE DESIGN

  • Bold geometric lines and forms, floral motifs
  • Use of expensive materials such as shagreen or marble as well as exotic woods such as mahogany, ebony and zebra wood
  • Metal accents, shimmering mirrored finishes
  • Embellishments made from exotic animal hides, inlays of mother-of-pearl or ivory

ART DECO FURNITURE DESIGNERS TO KNOW

VINTAGE ART DECO FURNITURE ON 1STDIBS

Few design styles are as universally recognized and appreciated as Art Deco. The term alone conjures visions of the Roaring Twenties, Machine Age metropolises, vast ocean liners, sleek typography and Prohibition-era hedonism. The iconic movement made an indelible mark on all fields of design throughout the 1920s and ’30s, celebrating society’s growing industrialization with refined elegance and stunning craftsmanship.

Widely known designers associated with the Art Deco style include Émile-Jacques Ruhlmann, Eileen Gray, Maurice Dufrêne, Paul Follot and Jules Leleu. The term Art Deco derives from the name of a large decorative arts exhibition held in Paris in 1925. “Art Deco design” is often used broadly, to describe the work of creators in associated or ancillary styles. This is particularly true of American Art Deco, which is also called Streamline Moderne or Machine Age design. (Streamline Moderne, sometimes known as Art Moderne, was a phenomenon largely of the 1930s, post–Art Nouveau.)

Art Deco textile designers employed dazzling floral motifs and vivid colors, and while Art Deco furniture makers respected the dark woods and modern metals with which they worked, they frequently incorporated decorative embellishments such as exotic animal hides as well as veneers in their seating, case pieces, living room sets and bedroom furniture. From mother-of-pearl inlaid vitrines to chrome aviator chairs, bold and inventive works in the Art Deco style include chaise longues (also known as chaise lounges) and curved armchairs. Today, the style is still favored by interior designers looking to infuse a home with an air of luxury and sophistication.

Paul Frankl 'Speed' Art Deco Living Room Suite in Black Leather, circa 1930s
Located in Los Angeles, CA
This incredible Paul Frankl attributed 'Speed' full living room suite is comprised of a three-seat sofa, a 2-seat sofa, armchair and ottoman. The 3-seat sofa and armchair are original 1930s production based on the interior construction details and visible age. The 2-seat sofa and ottoman were created later in the 1980s to match the set and everything was then reupholstered to a thick quality black leather. I personally love this set - the wide arms are perfect for placing a glass of Scotch and an ashtray to enjoy a nice cigar. The deep black color and matching black block feet provide ample masculine style while the shape and silhouette provide a refined and classy vibe. The leather is thick and quality, also smooth and soft to the touch. The collector who acquired this sofa and armchair, purportedly in the 1980s, stated he found what he believed to be a Frankl Galleries (Paul Frankl's 1930s showroom) original example of the Speed sofa...

Timeless Elegance: Art Deco Sofa from 1920s France, Recently Upholstered Ivory
Located in Boven Leeuwen, NL
Lose yourself in the timeless splendor of this exquisite Art Deco sofa, crafted around 1920 in vibrant France. Recently refurbished, this sofa radiates in all its renewed glory, adorned in a soft ivory-colored fabric. The woodwork has been bestowed with a beautiful light linen hue, enhancing its allure. While displaying minimal signs of use, as seen in the photos, these imperfections are scarcely noticeable due to the recent makeover. The essence of this sofa lies in its refined design and superb craftsmanship. The woodwork, now boasting a captivating light linen color, contributes to the piece's delicate aesthetic. Every detail has been meticulously crafted, with careful attention to the characteristic lines and shapes that define the Art Deco style. A masterpiece in its own right, the sofa has been recently (a few months ago) upholstered in a plush, ivory-colored soft fabric. This choice underscores the timeless beauty of the piece, offering a luxurious spot to unwind. The fabric's delightful texture invites moments of relaxation and comfort. The subtle contrast between the ivory upholstery and the light woodwork creates a harmonious balance that enhances the overall aesthetic of the sofa. While bearing the marks of its age, the sofa's minor signs of use, as visible in the photos, attest to its well-preserved history. These slight traces of aging add character to the piece and reflect the timeless beauty inherent in vintage furniture. They serve as a reminder of the countless stories and moments this sofa has witnessed, imbuing it with a unique and charming aura. With its stunning Art Deco heritage, fresh makeover, and subtle signs of use, this sofa is a rare find that has stood the test of time. Not only does it enhance your living space, but it also tells a tale of a bygone era of elegance and sophistication. Bamboo Chair Ubunji Kidokoro, circa 1930
Located in Venezia, VENETO
The bamboo armchair designed by Ubunji Kikokoro in the early 1930's is one of the most iconic pieces of Japanese design. The shape is a curved surface, supported between two U-shaped sections that meet at the top of the backrest. The bamboo chair uses "Moso bamboo" from western Japan, bamboo that has been naturally dried and deoiled as a cantilever structure that utilizes its elasticity. The design is based on an armchair by Alvar Aalto from the early 1930s and demonstrates the influence of Scandinavian design at the time. The first version was developed in 1937 for Mitsukoshi, a department store that was instrumental in introducing and promoting European modernism in Japan. Aalto’s armchair, and Kidokoro’s later version, expresses an artisanal response to the Bauhaus and international modernist style, using warm, natural materials instead of cold metals. In the 1940s, Charlotte Perriand exhibited the Kikokoro armchair in the Takashimaya department stores in Tokyo and Kyoto and produced furniture designs using similar methods. The Kikokoro armchair perfectly illustrates the mutual exchange and influence between Western and Japanese modernisms.

Art Deco P.E.L. Cantilever Chrome Sofa, for Odeon Cinemas circa 1930s
Located in Hastings, GB
An elegant and rare tubular steel modernist sofa attributed to PEL (Practical Equipment Ltd) The chromium plated steel wraps around the back and forms the armrests. It is upholstered in an old neutral textile and is ready for recovering. This sofa was commissioned for the lobby of a series of odeon cinemas opened in the early 1930's, notably the Muswell Hill Odeon, designed by George Coles. This sofa offers a rarely found intact example of British modernism in the golden age of cinema, influenced by the 30s designs of the German Bauhaus and their pioneering work in tubular steel furniture. The frame bears all the hallmarks and design details of Practical Equipment Ltd. It was most likely designed for PEL by either Oliver Bernard or Serge Chermayeff. We offer in-house upholstery and advice on suitable fabrics to complete this sofa's restoration. Price on application. Practical Equipment Ltd, known later simply as PEL, were the leading manufacturers of modernist tubular steel furniture in Britain. Established in Oldbury, near Birmingham the company was formed in 1931 by parent company Tube Investments, who were hoping to emulate the success of Thonet in producing tubular steel furniture. Critically acclaimed designers who worked with PEL included Oliver Bernard, Bruno Pollak and Serge Chermayeff. Design projects of note which featured PEL furniture...
