Monumental Mughal Brass and Copper Calligraphy Tray Table, India, circa 1920
Monumental Mughal Brass and Copper Calligraphy Tray Table, India, circa 1920

Monumental Mughal Brass and Copper Calligraphy Tray Table, India, circa 1920

Located in Moreno Valley, CA

Monumental Mughal Brass and Copper Calligraphy Tray Table, India, circa 1920 A monumental early-20th-century Indian brass and copper tray table, attributed to Rajasthan and dating to approximately 1920. Impressive in both scale and craftsmanship, this extraordinary low table combines a richly worked antique metal tray with a newly custom-made iron base, creating a functional coffee table with the presence of a significant work of Islamic decorative art. The expansive rectangular tray is handcrafted in copper and embellished with applied brass decoration. Its recessed central field is densely worked with Arabic-script calligraphy, scrolling arabesques, geometric borders and finely chased ornamental bands. The calligraphic decoration is organized in the Indo-Persian and Mamluk Revival tradition, reflecting the historic exchange of artistic vocabulary between Mughal India, Persia, Ottoman workshops and the Islamic metalworking centers of Cairo and Damascus. A broad raised border surrounds the central field, articulated with a rhythmic sequence of rounded repoussé bosses. Large sculptural handles extend from both ends of the tray, giving the piece an imposing overall width of 66.5 inches. The aged copper and brass surfaces retain a warm, softly burnished patina with oxidation, rubbing and tonal variation that reveal the tray’s age and handcrafted construction. The elaborate metalwork has been described historically as Qur’anic or Koranic calligraphy. However, because the inscriptions have not been independently translated, they are identified conservatively here as Arabic-script calligraphic decoration, possibly devotional in nature. This more precise description preserves the table’s important Islamic artistic character without making an unverified claim about the specific text. The antique tray rests on a newly fabricated blackened iron base designed specifically to accommodate its substantial proportions. The restrained linear construction of the stand provides stable support while allowing the highly detailed metal surface and sculptural handles to remain the visual focus. At approximately 17.25 inches high, the completed piece functions beautifully as a monumental cocktail table, low coffee table or central salon table. Its generous 57-by-33-inch tray surface offers ample room for entertaining, books or decorative objects, although the intricate calligraphy and metalwork are striking enough to be displayed with minimal styling. The removable tray may also be appreciated separately as an oversized example of Indian Islamic metalwork. This antique Mughal-style tray table would be an exceptional focal point in a Spanish Colonial, Mediterranean, Moorish, Islamic, British Colonial, Indo-Persian, maximalist or sophisticated contemporary interior. It is especially well suited to a large living room, library, collector’s salon, hotel lobby or luxury hospitality setting where its monumental scale can be fully appreciated. Dimensions: Overall with handles and custom base: 66.5 in. W × 33 in. D × 17.25 in. H Tray without handles: 57 in. W × 33 in. D × 2 in. H Each handle: approximately 11 in. × 6 in. Origin: Attributed to Rajasthan, India Date: Circa 1920 Period: Early 20th century Style: Mughal Revival, Indo-Persian, Islamic and Mamluk Revival Materials: Copper, brass and iron Techniques: Handcrafted, chased, engraved, repoussé and applied metal decoration Creator: Unknown Base: Newly custom-made blackened iron base Condition: Good antique condition with wear consistent with age and use. The copper and brass retain oxidation, rubbing, surface variation and an aged patina. The iron base is a later custom addition. SEO keywords and attributes: monumental Mughal tray...

Pair of Gilt Bronze and Faience Lamps, Attributed to Théodore Deck

By Theodore Deck

Located in London, GB

These beautiful table lamps have been attributed to Joseph-Théodore Deck, one of the most important ceramicists of the 19th century. Deck was the director of a prestigious faience workshop which was based in France. He was well known for his high-quality ceramic wares, which were often designed in Islamic and Chinese styles. The lamps are designed in a Persian manner. Each lamp is fitted with a gilt bronze (ormolu) light fixture which holds two bulbs. The lamps' bodies are crafted from faience (tin-glazed earthenware) and feature cylindrical necks and bulbous lower bodies. These bodies are decorated with stylised flowers, leafy vines, and Persian script...

Antique Southeast Asian Filipino Maranao Silver Inlaid Brass Betel Nut Box
Antique Southeast Asian Filipino Maranao Silver Inlaid Brass Betel Nut Box

Antique Southeast Asian Filipino Maranao Silver Inlaid Brass Betel Nut Box

Located in Forney, TX

A scarce fine quality antique silver-inlaid solid brass betel nut box (Lutuan), dating to the second half of the 19th / early 20th century, hand-crafted in Mindanao, Philippines. Boxes such as this were used to store the areca nut (also known as the betel nut) which would be wrapped in a betel leaf with lime paste and other ingredients, often tobacco, for chewing. Similar to the European tea caddy, these boxes often served as a way to impress while showing off ones wealth. Betel chewing was prevalent in the southern Philippines as in much of the rest of Southeast Asia. Wealthier Maranao families on Mindanao were able to afford elaborate silver-inlaid brass betel boxes such as this example. Such boxes were used to show off to guests and from which they were offered betel and the other component such as leaves and lime to make up the betel quid. Rare large size, most extant examples of such boxes tend to measure around 5 inches in length. At slightly more than 7.75 inches the example here is larger than most. The distinctive decorative box features a very heavy strong-box like rectangular shaped chest form with canted corners, copper handles, and a conforming hinged lid, lifting open to reveal an interior divided into three compartments covered by four hinged lids. Each of these doors is inlaid with silver in stylized orchid flower patterns. Exceptionally executed throughout, the arabesque silver inlaid exterior is decorated to the top with a large orchid motif within scrolling obid-obid (stylized rope) borders. The front, back and sides are inlaid with sets of stylized tail feathers of the sari-manok bird beneath which are unusual, highly stylized whimsical zoomorphic faces that appear like cat or tiger faces. (Such stylisation is accounted for by Southeast Asian Islamic preferences to avoid the overt and this potentially idolatrous representation of animal and human forms. Designs such as these are drawn from a local design repertoire that has its origins in wood carving. Although the spread of Islam in the Philippines began in the 14th century, mostly through the influence of Muslim merchants from the western Malay Archipelago, decorative arts in this design remain exceptionally rare. This lutuan represents a fine example of Islamic metalwork from the most eastern outreach of Islamic art and civilisation: Mindanao island being significantly further east than even China – artwork from Islamic Southeast Asia remains chronically under-represented in the world’s major collections of Islamic art. PROVENANCE / ACQUISITION Acquired from highly reputable auction house, Austin Auction Gallery, established 1983, Austin, Texas. References Brownrigg, H., Betel Cutters...

Islamic Calligraphic Rice Pan "Parat", 20th Century

Located in Islamabad, PK

This culinary masterpiece, designed for the preparation of rice, transcends its utilitarian purpose and becomes a work of art in its own right. The entire surface of the rice pan is adorned with intricately engraved calligraphy, adding a touch of elegance and cultural significance. The brass rice pan is substantial, reflecting its purpose as a tool for large-scale cooking. Its sheer size and sturdy construction make it a standout piece in any kitchen or culinary setting. The brass material provides a warm and lustrous backdrop for the detailed engravings that grace its surface. The calligraphy on the rice pan is a testament to the artistry and precision of the craftsman. Delicate Arabic or Persian script, characterized by flowing lines and elegant curves, covers the entire exterior of the pan. The calligraphy may feature verses from poetry, blessings, or traditional sayings related to food, hospitality, and prosperity. Each inscription is meticulously engraved, creating a visually striking contrast between the polished brass and the finely detailed letters. The combination of the monumental size, brass material, and engraved calligraphy transforms this rice pan into a cultural artifact that goes beyond its culinary function. It becomes a symbol of tradition, craftsmanship, and the importance of communal gatherings around food. Whether displayed as a piece of art or used in the preparation of meals, this monumental brass rice pan stands...
