Rococo Furniture

ROCOCO STYLE

Rococo was an aesthetic movement in the fine and decorative arts in the 18th century that found its inspiration in nature and fostered an overall lightness and delicacy of form, construction and ornament in interior design. Rococo furniture, while greatly influenced by trends in Italy and Germany, is often called Louis XV style — the movement having reached its best expression during that sybaritic French king’s reign.

The term “rococo” is thought to be a portmanteau of the French words rocaille and coquilles — “rock” and “shells” — organic motifs frequently used in architecture and design of the style.

When it comes to authentic Rococo furniture's characteristics, it is above all sensuous and social. The furniture of earlier eras in Europe had been heavy in every sense; the Rococo period saw the appearance of light-framed upholstered armchairs, side chairs and occasional tables that could easily be moved to form conversational circles.

The signal detail of Rococo furniture design is the gently curved cabriole, or S-shaped chair-, table-, and cabinet-leg. It imitates the bend of a tree limb or a flower stem. In a further reference to nature, furnishings were often asymmetrical and painted white, or in soft, pastel shades. Rococo has become a timeless style, and as the furniture pieces presented on 1stDibs demonstrate, its playful, sculptural forms can provide visual excitement to contemporary, clean-lined spaces.

Italian Carved Walnut Chairs with Leather Covers, Milan, circa 1750
Located in Milano, IT
Four carved walnut chairs with leather covers Milan, circa 1750 They measure: 39.37” high, 18.30” to the seat, 21.65” deep x 19.29” (100 cm high, 46.5 cm to the seat, 55 cm deep x 49 cm) State of conservation: - the leather covers are not original; - some signs of use, especially on leather covers; - the rocailles at the height of the backrests have lost part of the carved elements. The four walnut chairs have a mixtilinear structure adorned with rocaille relief carvings; the legs are shaped and end with a curl. The backs and seats are padded and covered with impressed leather with figures and cartouche decorations from later production. Around the mid-eighteenth century in Milan it was very popular to cover seats with impressed leather. Mutton or cowhide was used which, suitably tanned, was then worked with heated irons (hot decoration) or with carved wooden molds (cold decoration). These were impressed on the leather until obtaining a darker brown color. Our group of chairs...

18th Century, Pair of Italian Rococo Chinoiserie Lacquered Wood Corner Cabinets
Located in IT
18th Century, Pair of Italian Rococo Chinoiserie Lacquered Wood Corner Cabinets This pair of corner cabinets was made in Piedmont, Italy, around the middle of the eighteenth century according to the taste of the baroque. The structure is in poplar wood, lacquered and decorated on the front side. The central body consists of an open door that conceals a compartment with two shelves. Above, a mixed cymatium crowns the piece of furniture and consists of two small tops bordered with gold leaf on red bole. Equally finished in gold are reserves and frames that decorate the furniture highlighting the various parts of which it is composed. Below the door, a open compartment is presented by a quadrilobate profile. The piece of furniture is decorated with floral ornaments and polychrome chinoiserie designs partly in relief thanks to the application of cast plaster. Inside the side frames are depicted characters dressed in oriental with floral decorations typical of fashion in chinoiserie. The two central doors have different designs, animated by oriental figures dressed in Chinese clothes...

Venetian Painted Side Cabinet, Italy, Late 19th / Early 20th Century
Located in Morristown, NJ
This delightful Venetian painted side cabinet exemplifies the enduring appeal of Italian vernacular Rococo revival furniture. Finished in a warm yellow-ochre ground, the cabinet is ornamented throughout with hand-painted teal foliate scrollwork, arranged in lively asymmetrical cartouches across the top, drawer, door, and sides. The decorative painting retains a charming, freehand quality typical of Venetian workshop production, emphasizing surface decoration over formal carving. The cabinet features a single drawer over a cupboard door opening to an interior storage compartment, raised on elegant cabriole legs with a shaped apron. Brass pulls accent the drawer and door, adding subtle contrast to the painted surface. The piece is unmarked, as expected for provincial Italian furniture of this period. The softly undulating form, curvilinear legs, and scrolling ornament reflect Rococo influences filtered through later 19th-century and early 20th-century revival tastes, often produced for domestic interiors and export. Its scale and function make it ideal as a bedside cabinet, small side table, or accent piece. Dimensions: 27"h x 17"w x 15"d Condition: Good/Fair. General discoloration, surface marks, and staining throughout consistent with age and use. Visible ring stains to the top, along with cracking to the top and drawer. Paint wear and minor surface imperfections are present and contribute to the cabinet’s authentic patina and character. Provenance: The Iris Apfel Collection Remarks: A highly decorative and characterful example of Venetian painted furniture...
