Meret Oppenheim Meret Oppenheim -Traccia Table - The person and the works of German-Swiss artist Meret Oppenheim (1913-1985) are forever associated with surrealism and 20th century art history. Meret Oppenheim, in full Meret Elisabeth Oppenheim, (born October 6, 1913, Berlin, Germany—died November 15, 1985, Basel, Switzerland), German-born Swiss artist whose fur-covered teacup, saucer, and spoon became an emblem of the Surrealist movement. The piece, created when Oppenheim was just 23 years old, became so famous that it overshadowed the rest of her career. Oppenheim’s father was German and Jewish and her mother was Swiss. In 1914, at the outbreak of World War I, the family moved from Germany to Switzerland. Oppenheim was encouraged by her father and by her maternal grandmother, author and illustrator Lisa Wenger-Ruutz, to pursue art. Thus, in 1929 she began art studies at the Kunstgewerbeschule in Basel (through 1930). She then moved to Paris and briefly attended the Académie de la Grande Chaumière in 1932. Being in Paris offered Oppenheim the opportunity to connect with leading avant-garde artists, which, more than schooling, gave her entrée into the art world. In 1933 she met Alberto Giacometti, Man Ray, André Breton, and Jean (Hans) Arp. Oppenheim was quickly absorbed into the Surrealist circle and exhibited three paintings at the Salon des Surindépendants in Paris in 1933. A fine Louis XVI Style gilt bronze and Pietre Dure mounted ebonised writing table, retailed by Edwards & Roberts. French, circa 1870. The drawer edge stamped 'Edwards & Roberts'. This Fine ebonised writing table has a three-quarter galleried superstructure with cavetto moulding above three cupboards, each with a panel door inset with Fine pietre dure panels of vases issuing flowers. The lower part of the table has a pullout / pull-out writing slide with a dark blue leather writing surface, above a long drawer centred by a tablet mounted with a foliate pietre dure panel. The table is raised on tapering square section legs united by an 'X'-frame stretcher centred by a gilt bronze vase. The beautiful Florentine pietre dure panels are inlaid in high relief with shaded agates marble, and semi-precious stones. The combination of Fine gilt bronze mounts on an ebonised ground enriched with Fine pietre dure inlay indicates the work of one of the best Parisian ébénistes of the period. Edwards & Roberts, was one of the principal London companies working in the nineteenth century in the taste of the late Eighteenth Century. They started business in 1845 and by 1854 were trading as 'Edwards & Roberts, 21 Wardour Street, Antique and Modern Cabinet Makers and Importers of Ancient Furniture'. Round green marble top mounted with a bronze rim adorned with oves and pearls motif. Born in 1821 and dead in Paris in 1888, Louis-Constant Sévin was apprenticed to the parisian sculptor Marneuf. In 1839, he joined the sculptor-modelors Phénix and Joyau, as designer, and designed silver-smith’s objects for famous firms like Denière, Froment-Meurice, Morel and Duponchel. During the Revolution in 1848, C. Sévin joined Morel in London, as workshop manager and designed pieces that Morel exhibited in 1851. Back in France in 1851, C. Sévin went to Limoges and designed models for the porcelain factories of Jouhanneaud and Dubois of which many pieces were exhibited at the Universal Exhibition in 1855. From this date on, he worked for Ferdinand Barbedienne as sculptor-ornemanist until the end of his life. Sévin’s works are considerable, he designed furniture bronzes for the « hôtel de La Païva ». At the London Exhibition in 1862, he was awarded a medal « pour l’excellence artistique des meubles qu’il a dessinés et qui sont exposés par Barbedienne » : for the artistic excellence of the furniture he designed and which is exhibited by F. Barbedienne. He won a second class medal at the Union centrale des Arts décoratifs Exhibition in 1863 and was awarded a gold medal as « cooperator ». F.
