These beautifully carved panels would have been part of the doors of a cabinet made to impress in a grand room in an aristocratic or royal setting. They reflect the changing taste in the first half of the 17th century for large sumptuous pieces for grand galleries and grand state apartments in royal and courtly interiors. It was not until the 17th century that France began to import exotic timbers from the Far East and South America and ebony was one of the first of these woods to be employed in cabinet-making. However, due to its rarity and cost it was almost exclusively used for veneering. French cabinetmakers who worked with ebony became known as menuisiers en ébène and later ébénistes. The carved and engraved ornament and ripple mouldings reflect the light on the glossy ebony surface.
The subject-matter of these bas-relief carvings was inspired by prints with religious, mythological or literary subjects and naturalistic engraved motifs. Inlaid with mother-of-pearl and ebony in intricate geometric and foliate parquetry patterns, this beautiful piece was made in Syria in the nineteenth century during the time of the Ottoman Empire. With a central latticed rectangular panel at the back of the central shelf, with canted corners, it is flanked on each side by pillars with isometric triangular shaped cresting. The upper section, like the lower part, features foliate rather than geometric designs, and the surmount with a crescent finial features a large central roundel enclosing a mother-of-pearl inlaid tughra.

An exceptional and most decorative Austrian 19th century patinated bronze, giltwood and Ebony wall plaque signed K. Sterrer. The striking wall decor is centered by the wonderfully executed patinated bronze plaque depicting a handsome sculptor in his atelier draped in a flowing garment working on a bust of a woman resting on a stool while holding his hammer and chisel. He is standing on a wall bracket like element with an impressive open winged eagle above an acorn finial, a tied carpenter's square and a tied bell hammer with a caliper and fine foliate branches at his feet. In the background is a beautiful maiden also draped in a wonderful flowing garment siting with her legs crossed on the plinth of a capital where another maiden, possibly a statue, is standing with a globe and sextant in her hand with plaques, busts, wings and curtains above. The plaque is set within an elegant mottled giltwood frame with beautiful richly carved wrap around berried laurel bands with a fine angled ebonized Fruitwood border. All original gilt and patina throughout.
