Set of Three Erotic Boudoir Lithographs, Berlin, circa 1850

Located in Langweer, NL

TITLE: Set of Three Erotic Boudoir Lithographs, Berlin, circa 1850 DESCRIPTION: A rare and highly decorative set of three original mid-19th-century erotic boudoir lithographs, published by F. Sala & Co. in Berlin and printed by Gebrüder Waldow, circa 1850. The series presents three intimate scenes of women in private dressing rooms and bedrooms, combining fashionable interiors, partial nudity and suggestive situations with a distinctly playful narrative. Each composition is surrounded by an elaborate ornamental border and accompanied by captions in both German and French. The first scene shows three women dressing and admiring themselves before a mirror. Its captions read “Wo speisen wir heut?” / “Où dînerons nous aujourd’hui?” — “Where shall we dine today?” The second shows two women at their toilette, one seated and the other partially undressed. The captions make a playful reference to money, adding a suggestive social dimension to the intimate scene. The third, and most overtly sensual, depicts a partially undressed woman alone on a canopied bed. Its captions read “Keine Hoffnung – Alles dahin!” / “Quand on a tout perdu et qu’on n’a plus d’espoir!!!” — “No hope – all is lost!” / “When one has lost everything and has no hope left!” The bilingual captions are an important part of the series, transforming the images from simple representations of fashionable women into humorous and suggestive narrative scenes. Mirrors, dressing, undressing, private bedrooms and references to dining, money and lost hope give the group the character of sophisticated mid-19th-century erotic and social satire. Offered together as a coherent set of three original period lithographs. ARTIST / MAKER: Bülow, attributed; published by F. Sala & Co., Unter den Linden 57, Berlin; printed by Gebrüder Waldow, Berlin DATE: Circa 1850 ORIGIN: Berlin, Germany MEDIUM: Original tinted and colored lithographs on paper STYLE / PERIOD: Romantic / Historicism, mid-19th century CONDITION: Good antique condition. The sheets show age-related toning and scattered foxing and spotting, particularly in the margins. Minor handling and edge wear are present, consistent with their age. The lithographed scenes retain attractive, delicate period coloring and good detail. Please examine the photographs carefully as they form an integral part of the condition description. FRAMING: Offered unframed. Any framed or interior images shown are for presentation and inspiration only. AUTHENTICITY: A set of three original antique lithographs dating from circa 1850. These are original period prints and not modern reproductions. Julien Deturck (1862-1941) "The Young Brother" after William Bouguereau 1901

By William-Adolphe Bouguereau

Located in Argenteuil, IDF

Beautiful etching on wove paper with a watermark, BFK Rives, signed, titled, and published by the Société Française des Amis des Arts around 1900. Title "Le jeune frère" engraved by Julien Deturck (1862-1941), after the painting by William Bouguereau (1825-1905) The engraving is in very good condition Dimensions: "Le jeune frère" etching: Sheet: 460 x 328 mm - Engraving: 210 x 152 mm - Engraving plate: 270 x 198 mm Engraved signature: J. Deturck below the engraving on the right Engraved signature W Bouguereau 1900 in the engraving at the bottom left & Blank signature of the Société Française des Amis des Arts under the engraving lower right. Julien Deturck, pseudonym of Jules Alphonse Deturck, born in Bailleul on February 23, 1862 and died in Belvès on December 18, 1941, was a French engraver and pastel artist. In 1887, he was admitted to Alexandre Cabanel's class and was also a student of Léon Bonnat and Gustave Jacquet. Seeing the purity of his drawings, the latter advised him to focus on engraving. He was then admitted to the class of Louis-Pierre Henriquel-Dupont, whose engraver Jules Gabriel Levasseur was his substitute. In 1888, he was awarded the second Grand Prix de Rome for intaglio engraving. After graduating from the Beaux-Arts, he devoted himself primarily to engraving and pastel. He achieved his first success in 1894 for the engraving of a Tanagra discovered in Athens by the architect Titeux. He achieved his second success for the engraving The Dream of Eros after the painting by Jules Machard. He received a 3rd class medal at the 1899 Salon, then a silver medal at the 1900 Universal Exhibition. In 1901, he won the 2nd class medal at the 1901 Salon for the engraving The Young Brother after the painting by William Bouguereau. Adolphe William Bouguereau, born on November 30, 1825 in La Rochelle and died on August 19, 1905, was a French painter. In his realist paintings, he used mythological themes, offering modern interpretations of classical subjects, with an emphasis on the female figure. He was one of the major representatives of French academic painting of the late 19th century. The Société Française des Amis des Arts was founded in 1885 at the Palais de l'Industrie for the development of the arts, supported by numerous distinguished subscribers: Messrs. Gaston Doumergue (President of the French Republic), Baron Edmond de Rothschild, Count Greffulhe, the brothers Alfred, Jules, and Léon Bernheim, Louis Boucheron, Edgar Brandt, Emile Buland, Paul Chabas, Viscount Guy de Dampierre, Colonel Francis E. Drake, André Fallières, Louis Lévy, Paul Louchet, Maurice Moisset, Louis Montagné...

TITLE: Luise Miller, Schiller’s Kabale und Liebe – German Steel Engraving, 1859 DESCRIPTION: Original mid-19th-century steel engraving depicting Luise Miller, the central heroine of Friedrich Schiller’s celebrated bourgeois tragedy Kabale und Liebe (Love and Intrigue), first published and performed in 1784. Luise is portrayed as an elegantly dressed young woman in a domestic interior, standing beside a small table with a glass and plate. The finely rendered costume, furniture and interior details demonstrate the precision and tonal qualities characteristic of 19th-century steel engraving. The composition was drawn by German-Austrian artist Arthur von Ramberg (1819–1875), whose name appears beneath the image as “A. v. Ramberg gez.” It was engraved by Konrad Conrad Geyer and produced for the Schiller-Galerie, an illustrated series devoted to characters from the dramatic works of Friedrich Schiller. Published by F. A. Brockhaus’ Geographisch-artistische Anstalt in Leipzig, circa 1859. The elegant combination of German literary history, Romantic-era subject matter and detailed period costume makes this an attractive decorative print as well as an interesting piece for collectors of Schiller, German literature and 19th-century illustration.
