Baroque Wall Decorations
BAROQUE STYLE
The decadence of the Baroque style, in which ornate furnishings were layered against paneled walls, painted ceilings, stately chandeliers and, above all, gilding, expressed the power of the church and monarchy through design that celebrated excess. And its influence was omnipresent — antique Baroque furniture was created in the first design style that truly had a global impact.
Theatrical and lavish, Baroque was prevalent across Europe from the 17th to mid-18th century and spread around the world through colonialism, including in Asia, Africa and the Americas. While Baroque originated in Italy and achieved some of its most fantastic forms in the late-period Roman Baroque, it was adapted to meet the tastes and materials in each region. French Baroque furniture informed Louis XIV style and added drama to Versailles. In Spain, the Baroque movement influenced the elaborate Churrigueresque style in which architecture was dripping with ornamental details. In South German Baroque, furniture was made with bold geometric patterns.
Compared to Renaissance furniture, which was more subdued in its proportions, Baroque furniture was extravagant in all aspects, from its shape to its materials.
Allegorical and mythical figures were often sculpted in the wood, along with motifs like scrolling floral forms and acanthus leaves that gave the impression of tangles of dense foliage. Novel techniques and materials such as marquetry, gesso and lacquer — which were used with exotic woods and were employed by cabinetmakers such as André-Charles Boulle, Gerrit Jensen and James Moore — reflected the growth of international trade. Baroque furniture characteristics include a range of decorative elements — a single furnishing could feature everything from carved gilded wood to gilt bronze, lending chairs, mirrors, console tables and other pieces a sense of motion.

Important Baroque painting attributable to the hand of the great Roman old master Giacinto Brandi. It depicts San Giovannino who, with an expression of rare beauty and intensity, turns his gaze toward us who observe this small masterpiece. Giacinto Brandi (1621 – 19 January 1691) was an Italian painter from the Baroque era, active mainly in Rome and Naples. Born in Rome,he was part of the studio of Alessandro Algardi, a noted sculptor who noted that Brandi was more suited to painting. He joined the studio of Giovanni Giacomo Sementi. He traveled to Naples from 1638, and by 1647 had returned to Rome to work under Giovanni Lanfranco, where Brandi befriended Mattia Preti. The two artists would later on, often collaborate. His works are well distributed among baroque Churches of Rome including San Carlo al Corso ceiling frescoes (1670–1671), San Silvestro in Capite, Sant'Andrea al Quirinale, a canvas of Sant'Andrea (1650) in Santa Maria in Via Lata a painting of Martyrdom of the Forty (1660) for the Chiesa delle Santissima Stimmate di San Francesco a Coronation of the Virgin (1680) which serves as main altarpiece for the church of Gesù e Maria, a canvas of the Drunkedness of Noah in the Galleria Corsini, an Assumption (1655) for Santa Maria in Organo in Verona a fresco from Ovid's Metamorphoses (1651–1653) for Palazzo Pamphilj in Piazza Navona, and a Martyrdom of San Biagio for the church of San Carlo ai Catinari a Visione del beato Giovanni di San Facondo (1656) and a Estasi della beata Rita da Cascia (1660) in the Basilica di Sant'Agostino in Campo Marzio San Rocco intercede per i malati di peste (1673) and San Rocco in gloria (1674) in the Chiesa di San Rocco all'Augusteo; Compianto sul Cristo morto (1675–76) in the Chiesa di Sant'Andrea al Quirinale. San Antonio Abad or Antonio Magno (251-356) was a Christian monk, considered the founder of the eremitical movement. This work describes the weddings of the Nereid Thetis and the prince Peleo, parents of Achilles. It was celebrated on Mount Pelion, and all the deities came, although Eris, the goddess of discord, was not invited. In revenge, she threw a golden apple in which she said "for the most beautiful", that caused the dispute between Athena, Aphrodite and Hera that led to the Trial of Paris, to finally bring about the Trojan War. The banquet is depicted with a composition worked in depth, located in a rich interior of classical architecture illuminated by the light of Apollo, which is situated at the far end of the viewer. At the head of the table, in the foreground, appears Zeus, accompanied by the eagle and Hera, queen of the gods, to his left. In the lower right corner we see a group of satyrs serving the wine, accompanied by rich metal vessels worked with a detailed and descriptive brushstroke. The rest of the gods appear clearly differentiated, with Athena in the foreground to the right and, following an agile rhythm in zigzag, typically baroque, Aphrodite with Eros, Hermes and the grooms, to the left, and to the right Poseidon. Formally it is a work perfectly framed within the 17th century school of Madrid, developed around the court.
Thus, we see a sumptuous, allegorical classicist baroque, where the studies of light and color are especially relevant, revealing the exalted and luminous tone typical of this school's maturity. In particular, we can relate this painting to the circle of Juan de la Corte, painter of Flemish origin. We know nothing of his first formation today, for Palomino's assertion of his birth in Spain was documented, quoting in his testament that he was born in Antwerp. Also conserved documents in which the painter declares his apprenticeship in Flanders, where "it exerted his office by many years". For all this he has been associated with Flemish artists of the time who, due to personal knowledge or the study of his works, strongly influenced the configuration of his personal language. We know of his establishment in Spain at least since 1613. His work at the court encouraged him to ask for the place of royal painter who left vacant Bartolomé González...
