Silk Embroidery Artwork in a Gilt Frame, France, 19th Century
Silk Embroidery Artwork in a Gilt Frame, France, 19th Century

Silk Embroidery Artwork in a Gilt Frame, France, 19th Century

Located in Auribeau sur Siagne, FR

Silk embroidery depicting two guardian lions, framed in a gilt frame, 19th century. An elegant, hand-embroidered silk piece depicting two Foo lions (or imperial guardian dogs) surrounding a symbolic central medallion. Executed with exquisite detail in cream, blue, brown, and beige tones, this circular composition exemplifies the refinement of Asian-inspired textile arts from the late 19th century. The richness of the embroidery stitches highlights the details of the mythological creatures as well as the stylized clouds that encircle them. Presented under glass in a circular gilt frame with a turquoise blue mat, the work is displayed with particular elegance. At the crossroads of Oriental influences and the European taste for the exotic, this decorative piece is a beautiful collector's item for enthusiasts of textile art, Orientalism, and antique decoration. Style : Orientalist Asian Decorative Arts Traditional Chinese 19th Century Eclecticism Antique Textile Art Collectible Decoration Key Features : Hand-embroidered silk Depicts two mythological guardian lions Circular composition Antique gilt frame Turquoise blue mat Finely executed textile work 19th century Decorative and collectible object Keywords : silk embroidery artwork, antique silk embroidery, Chinese guardian lions, foo dog embroidery, orientalist wall art, framed silk textile, antique Asian textile, embroidered silk panel, gilt frame artwork, 19th century embroidery, antique silk embroidery, framed Chinese embroidery...

Echoes of the Nile: A Vintage Egyptian Tapestry of Pastoral Grace

By Ramses Wissa Wassef Workshop

Located in Dallas, TX

79103 Vintage Egyptian Kilim Tapestry Rug, 02'02 x 03'04. This exquisite handwoven wool Egyptian pictorial tapestry rug is a striking representation of traditional life and pastoral scenes that resonate with cultural depth and artistic expression. Crafted with meticulous attention to detail, the flatweave rug showcases a variety of animals commonly found in the rural landscapes of Egypt. Depicted are camels and goats, each rendered in natural, earthy tones that speak to the organic dyes derived from the region's abundant natural resources. The inclusion of a human figure, possibly a shepherd, anchors the composition in human experience, bridging the gap between nature and civilization. The background of the tapestry is a rich, textured gray (greenish undertones), representing the fertile grounds of the Nile Valley, which has historically been the lifeblood of Egyptian agriculture and rural life. This backdrop serves as a vivid canvas that highlights the vibrant hues of the animals, lending a sense of vitality and movement to the scene. Each animal is colored distinctively, allowing their individual forms to stand out, while also harmonizing with the overall palette to create a cohesive visual narrative. This vintage Egyptian tapestry...

Shop Vintage Tapestries on 1stDibs

Whether you hang them behind your bed as a dazzling alternative to a headboard or over the sofa as a large-scale focal point in the living room, vintage tapestries can introduce an array of textures and colors to any space in your home.

Woven wall hangings haven’t consistently enjoyed the popularity or earned the highbrow status that other types of wall decorations have over the years, at least not since the 1970s, which was somewhat of a heyday for tapestries. Today, however, these tactile works of art are seeing a renaissance, as modern weavers are forging new paths in the medium while the demand for antique and vintage tapestries continues to grow.

“We are drawn to texture in environments, and we see tapestries as a subtle layer of soft ornament,” says Lauren Larson of the New York design duo Material Lust. Indeed, and a lot of opportunity comes along when decorating with this distinctive brand of soft ornament.

Think of wall hangings as paintings created by hand with fabric instead of oil or watercolors. If you’re not simply securing your treasure to a wall with nails, pushpins or Velcro, tapestries can be stretched over a frame, used to create a canopy in a cozy living-room corner, hung from a rod or placed inside a shadowbox. And because this kind of textile art is hundreds of years old, options abound with respect to subjects and designs.

For richly detailed depictions of landscapes and garden scenes, look to antique Chinese tapestries and Japanese tapestries. Aubusson tapestries are ornate wall hangings manufactured in central France that are also characterized by romantic portrayals of nature. For weavers of mid-century modern tapestries, as well as those working in textile arts today, the styles and subject matter are too numerous to mention, with artists exploring experimental shapes, bold colors and provocative abstract designs.

Antique, new and vintage tapestries can make a room feel warm and welcoming — find yours on 1stDibs now.
