The monkey is a paradoxical character in Japanese culture and Shinto mythology; he is cunning and clever in some tales yet lustful and roguish in others — a foil to the more generous and stable aspects of human nature. Sometimes he is representative of greed, while other times he acts selflessly as a messenger of the gods. The monkey is a restless soul above all else, and a mirror for man to examine his own existence. In Saru, the monkeys depict innumerable temperaments, catching them in moments of fearlessness, compassion and mischief.

After studying conceptual art at the San Francisco Art Institute, Creative Director Zak Profera founded ZAK+FOX in 2012 in tribute to one’s absolute imagination. “Every craftsman searches for what’s not there to practice his craft.” said the Sufi poet Rumi, long ago. The company’s collections are the result of that continuous search — it is the lacuna between history and myth that keep one in perpetual wonder. The Madidi Hummingbirds design is a tribute to the incredible diversity of Andean hummingbirds, of which there are 140 different species. This design features Andean Hillstars, Great Sapphirewings, and Giant Hummingbirds. These super-heroic little birds can fly at speeds which, relative to body length, are greater than any other vertebrate, with wing-speeds of over 80 beats per second. They also serve as specific pollinators for many flowers such as those in the Puya genus. The bases of these bromeliads are important bear foods and many have beautiful turquoise flowers. Brunschwig and Fils Boscobel Restoration Medford Inn 1804 hand-printed wallpaper. Very unusual paper - it is marked as custom hand-printed for the Boscobel Restoration, Inc. with a copyright date of 1977. The Boscobel Restoration is a rebuilt historic mansion (see images 9 and 10) in Garrison, NY using salvaged parts of an original Federal-period home that was demolished in the 1950s. This is a historic pattern, marked on the paper as "Medford Inn, 1804" and a registered design of the Society for the Preservation of New England Antiquities. The Medford Inn (see image 11) was built in 1804 and became known as a well-known hotel located on Main Street in Medford, Massachusetts.
The design of the paper hearkens back to Roman tradition of wall decoration, with a trompe l’oleil effect that mimics ornate panelling and stone inlay. As per the this paper was also produced in a brown colorway and is part of the Digital Public Library of America and Historic New England...

This design is part of The Beatrice Edit, a collaboration between biologist/designer Susy Paisley and her daughter Beatrice, who is a budding interior designer. and avowed minimalist. One day, in a conversation about their different tastes, it occurred to them to do an edit of Newton Paisley designs for people who, like Beatrice, think less is more in their interiors. Best-selling Newton Paisley designs were reimagined as one-colour 18th century toile de Jouys; favourite botanical details from other designs were reconfigured in simple airy geometrical repeats.
