William Spratling has been called the Father of Mexican Modernist Silver Design. He earned a degree in architecture from Auburn University, formerly the Alabama Polytechnic Institute and was invited to teach there upon graduation. In 1931, he travelled to Taxco, Mexico to re-establish the silver industry traditional to the area, naming his workshop Taller de las Delicias. Striking, unusual Mesoamerican and Pre-Colombian motifs with a modern aesthetic and high level of quality attracted collectors and gave Mexican artisans a venue for expressing their cultural heritage. Spratling silver was sold through such prominent American stores as Saks Fifth Avenue and Neiman Marcus.
