Pomona, oil painting, Women in the Arts, Realistic painting, Historical Figures
Located in Houston, TX
Pomona reexamines portraits of individuals throughout history to illustrate the premise that history flows into the present in an ever-changing state. And, with each new context, we view people and events through a contemporary lens specific to that moment. Pomona appropriates and contextualizes original portrait elements to create reinvented portraits using technique and patterning that brings a contemporary context and perspective to these historically inspired portraits. My current body of work, Contemporary Histories, explores this phenomena by re-interpreting historical portraiture using a contemporary visual language. It is my intent to create a modern visual lens through which to view these individuals and their legacies, as they continue to flow into the present in ever-changing states. As a keen example of how history changes and morphs over time, I have selected portraits of women who chose an alternate path from the traditional ones prescribed in their times. Some of these individuals overtly stepped outside the traditional roles prescribed for women to realize their goals. Others astutely maneuvered within the social system they lived in to obtain their aspirations. Whether altruistic or nefarious, these women and their actions altered the future cultural landscape. Through a 21st century lens, we view them as women with minds of their own, who made choices to control their own lives and futures. Often, in stark contrast to how they were viewed and how their actions were recorded in their own times. For a modern visual language, a combination of fine and decorative arts has inspired my approach to this subject. Employing several formal contemporary tenets, most notably, rather than place the figure in a 3-dimensional space, as in the originals, the figures reside in flat graphic picture planes of damask designs, repetitive patterns or botanical grounds as modern settings for their modern legacies. These graphic backgrounds symbolize what was historically considered a woman’s proper domain, in particular, gardening and needle crafts, such as; quilting, embroidery and sewing. Formally, unlike the originals, I am working alla prima, rather than with a base grisaille and delicate layers of glazing. While, the patterned and botanical environments, along with gold leaf applications, contemporary compositions and color palettes are formally influenced by a spectrum of 19th - 21st century artists and artisans; from Gustav Klimt and the Wiener Werkstatte to Henri Rousseau, Tamara de Lempicka and Will Cotton. "EL SALTO" EVENING LIGHT MOUNTAINS
Located in San Antonio, TX
C.S. Steve Talley Fredericksburg Texas & Santa Fe New Mexico Artist Image Size: 8 x 10 Frame Size: 11.5 x 13 Medium: Oil "El Salto" Evening Light C. S. “Steve” Talley developed an art interest not long after graduating with a degree in astronomy/physics from the University of Texas at Austin in 1978. Juggling a career in the sciences and ultimately computer programming, his art skills continued to improve by taking workshops from primarily plein air artists. Talley’s style of impressionistic realism continues to evolve as he explores color from bold to tonalist. He takes artistic license to push a color or include a compositional element to accomplish his goal of creating the intangible “strong emotional content”. Beginning as a portrait painter he has evolved to become primarily a western landscape painter. He also enjoys painting astronomical and religious themes. His main influences come from Paul Strisik, Will Sparks...

"PALA MISSION" Northern San Diego County California Reservation.
By Paul Grimm
Located in San Antonio, TX
Paul Grimm (1891-1974) California Artist Image Size: 24 x 30 Frame Size: 31 x 37 Medium: Oil on Canvas Dated 1953 "Pala Mission" The San Antonio de Pala Asistencia, or the "Pala Mission", was founded on June 13, 1816, as an asistencia or "sub-mission" to Mission San Luis Rey de Francia, some twenty miles inland upstream from the latter mission on the San Luis Rey River. Pala Mission was part of the Spanish missions, asistencias, and estancias system in Las Californias—Alta California. Today it is located in the Pala Indian Reservation located in northern San Diego County, with the official name of Mission San Antonio de Pala.[2][4] It is the only historic mission facility still serving a Mission Indian tribe. Pala (a derivation of the native term Pale, meaning water) was essentially a small rancho surrounded by large fields and herds. The Pala site had been noted by Father Juan Mariner and Captain Juan Pablo Grijalva on an exploratory trip in 1795, when they went up the San Diego River, and then through Sycamore Canyon to the Santa Maria Valley (or Pamó Valley) and into what they named El Valle de San José, now known as Warner Springs. Once Mission San Luis Rey began to prosper, it attracted the attention of numerous mountain Native Americans in the area, who were called the Luiseño by the Spanish. Spanish era The Franciscan fathers chose this site for the Pala Mission because it was a traditional gathering place and village for the Native American residents. Father Peyrí oversaw the addition of a chapel and housing to the granary complex, which was constructed at the spot in 1810.[4] The chapel's interior wall surfaces featured paintings by native artists, originally measuring 144 by 27 feet. Workers went into the Palomar Mountains and cut down cedar trees to use as roof beams.[5] Pala is unique among all of the Franciscan missions in that it boasts the only completely freestanding campanile, or "bell tower," in all of Alta California. By 1820, some 1,300 baptisms had been performed at the outpost.[6] Folk tales about the mission include mention of a prickly pear cactus, which became a local symbol of Christian victory, that grew up at the foot of the cross.[7] Mexican era After the nation achieved independence from Spain, the Mexican Congress passed An Act for the Secularization of the Missions of California on August 17, 1833 (the act was ratified in 1834).[8] Father Buenaventura Fortuna surrendered Mission San Luis Rey and all its holdings, including Las Flores Estancia and the Pala Asistencia, to government comisianados (commissioners) Pío Pico and Pablo de la Portillà on August 22, 1835; the assessed value of "Rancho de Pala" was $15,363.25.[9] More than a decade later, fearful of the impending conquest of Alta California by the United States as a result of the Mexican–American War...

Highways and Byways, Acrylic, Texas Artist. Contemporary Art, Abstract Art
By Cheryl McClure
Located in Houston, TX
Highways and Byways is painting on a wooden panel so there is no need for a frame.. Like a lot of artists, McClure’s interest in art developed early in childhood. She recalls, “When I was eight years old, I begged my dad to let me take an after-school painting class. I was shocked when I got there and found out they were painting with paint by number kits. I did not want to do that. I hate coloring inside the lines. So, the teacher allowed me to look for images to use as inspiration. In my memory, I think the first one must have been a reproduction of a Cezanne landscape. I just did what I did all on my own, but I loved mixing colors. Then my dad died, and we moved from Oklahoma to Texas. Sadly, I never really did anything else until I was in my twenties. I then took up painting again all on my own and trying to learn from other artists demonstrating their painting techniques and taking workshops. I have been painting ever since, more than forty years.” She continues, “For many years I only painted with acrylics or mixed media collage. In 2005, I also started painting with encaustic and have gone back to using oil paint again. I suppose acrylic remains my dominant medium. Mixing it up now and then keeps me on my toes and is a great way to learn. Each medium can teach you certain aspects of painting others do not. Each medium has its strengths and weaknesses depending on what you want to express. You can learn from all. I did not love watercolor because it took too much pre-planning. But I learned a lot about negative shapes and composition. I learned a lot with pastel and charcoal about making marks. By working back and forth with different media, I am growing as a painter.” If I used only intent, I would more than likely be disappointed because my imagined intent is always elusive. I get more than I imagined by not setting too many rules about how to get there. Using all of these factors, I can use the knowledge of formal issues that comes from viewing a lot of art and, also, from being in the studio making art all of the time. Using that comprehension of formal design as an aid to intuitively know what is the right relationship of color, mark, space, etc. is the intent. Intention is necessary to direct you to explore the former two. Intention also demands you delve more into your own reasons for making art. 2020 University of Texas, College of Pharmacy Partnership Exhibit, Tyler, TX Beauty of Art and Medicine IV, Rogers Nursing and Health Sciences Building, Tyler Junior College, Tyler, TX Stable, Cerulean Gallery, Dallas, TX 2019 Mississippi Art Colony Fall Travel Show, juror, Stanley Kurth Small Works, Gallery Mack, Seattle, WA 2017 Black Tie (optional), Invitational, Adam Peck Gallery, Provincetown, Mass. Contemporary Mummy, Large Sculpture: 'Rhoman Artemis'
By Joshua Goode
Located in New York, NY
Inspired by amateur archaeologists such as Heinrich Schliemann who discovered Troy and by past elaborate hoaxes like that of the Piltdown Man, Joshua travels the world performing staged archaeological excavations exposing the malleability of our history. During these performances he discovers his own versions of historical artifacts, crafted from objects from his youth--such as baseball cards, G.I. Joe action figures, POGS, and various other toys and items. His discoveries and claims, while false and absurdly comical, are based on real research. Joshua Goode: Born in Fort Worth, Texas in 1981, Joshua Goode is researching and developing mythic historical misinterpretations and manipulations in an effort to expose the malleability of our past, present and future. His alternate history and mythology preserve memories of childhood ranch life in Texas by reimagining objects and imagery from his youth as iconic ancient artifacts. Having studied history and worked as an archaeologist on many actual excavations, he conducts staged excavations around the world, working with the community as a performance. The constructed artifacts of his invented civilization mix fact and fiction to appropriate and distort the history and myths of each region he engages. His ‘artifacts’ have been exhibited in solo exhibitions in international venues such as the Razliv Museum, St. Petersburg, (Russia); Capellades Museum, Barcelona, (Spain); Zendai Museum of Modern Art, Shanghai, (China); Darb 1718 in Cairo, (Egypt); LaSala Gallery, Zaragoza, (Spain); Galerija Miroslav Kraljevic...
