Presumably the signature stands for Mathurin Moreau, a 19 Century French sculptor born 1822, and son of noted sculptor Jean Baptiste Moreau. In 1841, the 19 year old Mathirin entered the École des Beaux Arts in Paris and, the following year, won the Second Grand Prix de Rome with his sculpture Diodemus removing the Palladium. A large bronze bust showing a beautiful young woman depicted as a Bacchante, the Greek Goddess of Wine, her head festooned with grape branches. The bust is supported by an integral bronze plinth that at the back is inscribed with the name of the sculptor, J. Clesinger Rome 1857 dating the bronze to the time when the sculptor was 33 years old.
The sculptor whose full name was Jean Auguste Baptiste Clesinger was born in 1813 in Besancon in Southern France. His father, Georges-Philippe, was a sculptor and trained Auguste in art. Auguste first exhibited at the Paris Salon in 1843 with a bust of Vicomte Jules de Vaidahon. At the 1847 Salon, he created a sensation with his Woman bitten by a serpent, produced from life-casts from his model Apollonie Sabartier who was a notorious Parisian and the mistress of many perhaps even of Clesinger himself. Later he also produced this bust of her as Bacchante.

A beautifully cast pair of French 19th century neoclassical patinated figural bronze nine arm candelabra after a model by Jaen Jacques Pradier They are signed J. Pradier and were converted into lamps in the 20th century. Each candelabra is cast as classically draped maiden with one representing Phyrne and the other unknown, standing on a circular stepped dark green marble socle base. There are no visible foundry marks on the bronzes.
Born in Geneva in 1792 in Switzerland, Pradier was the son of a Protestant family from Toulouse. He left for Paris in 1807 to work with his elder brother, Charles-Simon Pradier, an engraver, and also attended the École des Beaux-Arts beginning in 1808. He won a Prix de Rome that enabled him to study in Rome from 1814-1818 at the Villa Médici. Pradier made his debut at the Salon in 1819 and quickly acquired a reputation as a competent artist. He studied under Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres in Paris. In 1827 he became a member of the Académie des beaux-arts and a professor at the École des Beaux-Arts.

This is an elegant monumental Grand Tour bronze sculpture of Michelangelo's David, circa 1880 in date.
The full-length portrait statue is of David, the 14ft marble statue depicts the Biblical hero David, represented as a standing male nude, David looks tense and ready for battle after he has made the decision to fight Goliath, but, before the battle has actually taken place. His brow is drawn, his neck tense, and the veins bulge out of his lowered right hand and holding his slingshot over his shoulder.
This impressive scuplture is 107cm (3ft 6" ) tall and weighs over 36kgs (79lbs).
This high quality hot cast solid bronze was produced using the traditional 'lost wax' process.
The attention to detail of this sculpture is absolutely fantastic.

Michelangelo's David
This astonishing Renaissance sculpture was created between 1501 and 1504. It is a 14ft marble statue depicting the Biblical hero David, represented as a standing male nude. Originally commissioned by the Opera del Duomo for the Cathedral of Florence, it was meant to be one of a series of large statues to be positioned in the niches of the cathedral’s tribunes, way up at about 80mt from the ground. Michelangelo was asked by the consuls of the Board to complete an unfinished project begun in 1464 by Agostino di Duccio and later carried on by Antonio Rossellino in 1475. Both sculptors had in the end rejected an enormous block of marble due to the presence of too many “taroli”, or imperfections, which may have threatened the stability of such a huge statue...

Allegorical Bronze Statue Depicting Lady Justice Signed Dubanton

A well cast patinated early 20 century allegorical bronze statue of Lady Justice shown as a bare breasted and classically draped standing maiden blindfolded and holding aloft a two tray balance scale in one hand and a sword in the other while stepping on a book and a snake. The whole is mounted on a half sphere representing the world which in turn sits on top of a round stepped black marble base. The bronze is signed Dubanton.
Balance Scale held high by Lady Justice represents impartiality and the obligation of the law (through its representatives) to weigh the evidence presented to the court. Each side of a legal case needs to be looked at and comparisons made as justice is done.
The sword symbolizes enforcement and respect, and means that justice stands by its decision and ruling, and is able to take action. The fact that the sword is unsheathed and very visible is a sign that justice is transparent and is not an implement of fear. A double-edged blade signifies that justice can rule against either of the parties once the evidence has been perused, and it is bound to enforce the ruling as well as protect or defend the innocent party.
