E Picault Gilt Bronze Statue Titled "Gratus Animus " or "Gratitiude"

About the Item

A beautifully cast late 19 century French bronze statue by Emile Picault of a classically draped winged maiden on clouds holding a tablet inscribed "La Reconnaissance est La Memoire du Coeur " which means acknowledgement or appreciation is the memory of the heart..The statue is raised on a square tapering patinated bronze pedestal which in turn sits on a 1 " thick verde antico marble base. The bronze is titled " Gratus Animus " meaning "Gratitude" inscribed on a gilt bronze scroll and in a leafy branch mount at the front of the base. The sculptor'sn signature E. PIcault is engraved on the side of the base and a foundry mark is stamped discreetly at the back. : Émile Louis Picault (1833 – 1915) was a French sculptor, best known for works depicting allegorical and patriotic subjects, and mythological heroes. Picault was a very prolific artist, producing sculptures in abundance—over 500 models in total—during his long sculpting career. He began to show his artwork at the Salon beginning in 1863. He signed the majority of his work as "E. Picault". as in this model

  • Condition:
    Wear consistent with age and use. Bronze was professionally cleaned and polished.. The verdv antico marble vat the base was cracked but was professionally repaired not by glue but by attaching a bronze plate to the bottom. The crack does not show with the statue on it.
