A large and boldly painted Korean "Bamboo and Plum" underglaze iron brown porcelain vase, 20th century, Korea. The large porcelain vase of baluster vase form with generous proportions. The bulbous body with high, wide shoulders, tapering down to a flat recessed foot. The body decorated in underglaze iron brown with large designs of tall, leafy bamboo stalks to one side. The opposite side with gnarled branches of blossoming plum. Bamboo is revered in Korea, and Asia in general for its strength, flexibility and quick growing nature. Plum is invested with similar ideals, representing strength and resilience, as it flowers in the depth of winter. The neck and shoulders featuring a design of stylized clouds. It was decorated with incised brushwood fence patterns filled with white slip on both the interior and exterior surface. These dominant motifs were spaced by three encircling double lines. Seven chrysanthemum flowers (inka) were stamped on the lower interior surrounding a swirling tea well on the bottom. There are six spur marks known as Meato in Japanese on the interior bottom and a pointy spot in the center of the foot ring known as Tokin. A Korean ceramic bottle with octagonal faceted form with underglaze copper red decoration. The robust bottle with the long neck and a relatively thick built was used to hold liquor such as wine and it was from Joseon dynasty, likely late period (circa mid-late 19th century). The bottle was covered in a milky white glaze with a pleasant warm yellow tint. It has an underglaze iron red paint of branches of gingko leaves on the front and the back side. The color was oxidated into an ochre brown hue instead of iron red. The octagonal form extends nicely from the opening to the base, continuing through the body and makes this bottle geometrically interesting. The rustic paint of the gingko leaves also render the piece a folky modern appeal. Water dropper is one of the essential scholar objects in the Confucius Joseon society where ink calligraphy was considered an important cultivation of an educated man. The water dropper is a small contained made to drop the water onto the ink stone to grind the ink stick for writing. These miniature objects were made in various forms as little wonders as a desktop accessory for the Scholar's study. The water dropper on offer was made of porcelain and covered in a grey celadon glaze. It was molded in the form of a beach with finely sculpted stalk and leaves. A slight red was dotted on the two openings. The surface also has a carved grape or pomegranate motifs under the glaze. There is some slightly running of the celadon glaze on top. The base has residues of kiln grits. Although the peach form was perhaps one of the most common ones among the Korean water droppers...
