John Samuel Agar (1773 - 1858) after John Uwins (1782 - 1857) Pensioner of Trinity College, Cambridge, Masters of Arts, and Sizer (1815) Hand-coloured aquatint 25 x 30 cm Published by Rudolph Ackermann (1764 - 1834). An engraving of a pensioner of Trinity College, Masters of Arts, and a sizer (that is, an undergraduate who received some form of assistance such as meals, lower fees or lodging during his period of study, in some cases in return for doing a defined job) from Ackermann's 'A History of the University of Cambridge, Its Colleges, Halls and Public Buildings'. The four figures walk forward with ceremonial accoutrements, possibly to a graduation ceremony. At Cambridge, a sizar was originally an undergraduate student who financed his studies by undertaking more or less menial tasks within his college but, as time went on, was increasingly likely to receive small grants from the college. Certain colleges, including St John's and Trinity, distinguished between two categories of sizar: there were specific endowments for specific numbers of sizars who were called "proper sizars"; those who were not so endowed, but who were maintained by fellow-commoners and fellows were called subsizars. Isaac Newton matriculated as subsizar at Trinity College. Richard S. Westfall noted that sizars were considerably more successful in gaining degrees than the gentlemen who entered Cambridge in the seventeenth century. Pensioners, on the other hand, paid a fixed annual fee in order to study. Thomas Uwins RA RWS was a British painter in watercolour and oil, and a book illustrator. He became a full member of the Old Watercolour Society and a Royal Academician, and held a number of high-profile art appointments including the librarian of the Royal Academy, Surveyor of Pictures to Queen Victoria and the Keeper of the National Gallery. In the late 1790s he began producing work for Ackermann's collections. John Samuel Agar was an English portrait painter and engraver, who exhibited his works at the Royal Academy from 1796 to 1806 and at the British Institution until 1811. He was at one time president of the Society of Engravers. Rudolph Ackermann published many of his engravings. Ackermann was an Anglo-German bookseller, inventor, lithographer, publisher and businessman. He attended the Latin school in Stollberg, but his wish to study at the university was made impossible by lack of financial means, and he therefore became a saddler like his father. He worked as a saddler and coach-builder in different German cities, moved from Dresden to Basel and Paris, and then, 23 years old, settled in London. He established himself in Long Acre, the centre of coach-making in London and close to the market at Covent Garden. Ackermann then moved to Little Russell Street where he published Imitations of Drawings of Fashionable Carriages (1791) to promote his coach-making. Other publications followed. In 1795 he established a print-shop and drawing-school at 96 Strand. Here Ackermann set up a lithographic press and began a trade in prints. He later began to manufacture colours and thick carton paper for landscape and miniature painters. Within three years the premises had become too small and he moved to 101 Strand, in his own words "four doors nearer to Somerset House", the seat of the Royal Academy of Arts. Between 1797 and 1800 Ackermann rapidly developed his print and book publishing business, encompassing many different genres including topography, caricature, portraits, transparencies and decorative prints. During the Napoleonic wars, Ackermann was an energetic supporter of the Allied cause and made significant contributions to British propaganda through his publication of anti-Napoleonic prints...

SHIPS THAT PASS IN THE NIGHT, (Barcos que Passan na Noite) 1999, color screenprint, signed in pencil, numbered 1/60, sheet 22 ½ x 27 ½”. From Jerusalem print workshop. Asaf Ben Zvi, Israeli contemporary artist, was born in Kfar Yehezkel, Israel, 1953. Studied at the Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design, Jerusalem and the Pratt Institute, New York. Laureate of numerous awards, notably the Rappaport Prize for an Established Artist for 2011, Tel Aviv Museum of Art. Lives and works in Jerusalem. He did his army service in a commando unit and fought in the Yom Kippur War. After his discharge from the army he settled in Jerusalem and became interested in bird-watching. In 1981 he began to study architecture at Bezalel, but transferred to the art department. During the period of his studies, he worked primarily in sculpture, but after a period of study in New York, he began to paint as well. From the mid-1980s he made use of simple figures, so abstracted in their form that they became symbolic figures. Some of these figures were connected to biographical baggage, while others were based on trivial events. Many of his works are based on poetic texts that show his interest in esthetics and in the relationship between the painter and society. Education 1981-1985 Bezalel School of Art and Design, Jerusalem, BFA 1985 Pratt Institute, New York.City, USA Teaching 1933 Bezalel School of Art and Design, Jerusalem. Since 1989 Kalisher School, Tel Aviv. In 1981, he enrolled in the Art department at Israel’s Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design. During his studies, he participated in a student exchange program at the Pratt Institute in New York. From the outset, Ben Zvi’s focus has been on nature and the environment. Ecological and human disasters and natural disasters initially played an main role in his work and received expression through various fields of color, with motifs such as a cross, a water flask, a wasp, butterfly or bird, symbolizing the fragile human existence steeped in an eternal struggle. In his later work, words penetrate the space of his paintings and art, reflecting on the private, public, local and universal realms. "Ben Zvi at his best is a visual poet, one who places words with great sensitivity to their tone and sometimes relinquishes the splendor of an image in favor of text and message." Philip Pearlstein (American, 1924-2022) Stonehenge Landscape Sugar Lift Aquatint Etching with Roulette on Rives BFK Paper, 1979 Series: Ruins and Landscapes Printer: Orlando Condesso Printer: Nancy Brokopp Medium: Sugar-lift aquatint with roulette Philip Pearlstein is an influential American painter best known for Modernist Realism nudes. Cited by critics as the preeminent figure painter of the 1960s to 2000s, he led a revival in realist art. He is a Distinguished Professor Emeritus with paintings in the collections of over 70 public art museums. Philip M. Pearlstein was born on May 24, 1924 in Pittsburgh, PA. He attended Saturday morning classes at Pittsburgh's Carnegie Museum of Art. In 1942, at the age of 18, two of his paintings won a national competition sponsored by Scholastic Magazine, and were reproduced in color in Life magazine. In 1942, he enrolled at Carnegie Institute of Technology's art school, in Pittsburgh, where he painted two portraits of his parents now held by the Carnegie Museum of Art, but after one year he was drafted by the US Army to serve during World War II. He was initially assigned to the Training Aids Unit at Camp Blanding, Florida, where he produced charts, weapon assembly diagrams and signs. In this role, he learned printmaking and the screenprinting process, and subsequently was stationed in Italy making road signs. While in Italy, he took in as much renaissance art as was accessible in Rome, Florence, Venice and Milan, and also produced numerous drawings depicting life in the Army. In 1946, sponsored by the GI Bill, he returned to Carnegie Institute, and first met Andy Warhol, who was attracted to Pearlstein because of his notoriety in the school, having been featured in Life magazine. During the summer of 1947, the three rented a barn as a summer studio. Immediately after graduating in June 1949 with a BFA, Pearlstein and Warhol moved to New York City, at first sharing an eighth-floor walkup tenement apartment on St. Mark's Place at Avenue A. He was eventually hired by Czech designer Ladislav Sutnar, mainly doing industrial catalog...

Modern British Surrealist Abstract Bold Color Aquatint Etching Print Yellow Eye

By Alistair Grant

Located in Surfside, FL

Alistair Grant was a familiar feature of the London art scene. Best known as a printmaker, his entire teaching career was spent in the printmaking department at the Royal College of Art, where he was to become Professor. Over the years he taught printmaking to many who were to become leading UK artists. Grant was at the top of his profession and a groundbreaker in his explorations of mixed media techniques. Grant was also a wonderful painter. In the early 1980s his imagery had turned to an open expressionist style, with sweeping brush marks and the introduction of new vibrant colour. Inspired by the Normandy coastline around Etaples and Le Touquet. Grant would create cyphers from the shapes and forms in the landscape, which he would offset against curtains of colour. They evoke bright or misty days, blazing skies or sunsets, beaches or harbours. The paintings and prints are descriptions of places he loved and constantly returned to. One could describe him as a French reflection of the St. Ives School where painters explored the landscape in similar fashion, as they still do. There is a wonderful sense of freedom in these images, and a great joie de vivre. Grant was a supreme colourist. He also co-authored an important book on the life and works of fellow English artist Henry Moore, whom his abstract figurative style resembles. This print is from the late 1960s and show the strong influence of figurative abstraction and surrealist elements in his work. Although best known as a printmaker, Grant also painted throughout his career and in the 1980s he adopted an expressionist style using vibrant colours. He was born in London and studied at Birmingham College of Art (1941-43). After serving during the war, Grant returned to art school and the Royal College, where he was taught by Carel Weight and Ruskin Spear. Grant was to work in the printmaking department of the Royal College for 35 years (1955-90), ending his career as Emeritus Professor of Printmaking at the RA. He showed with Julian Trevelyan. Grant showed at the Royal Academy, Artists International Association, and New English Art Club, and was a prize-winner at the Krakow Print Biennale in 1972. The TATE, The Victoria & Albert Museum, British provincial and many overseas galleries hold Grant’s work. His work is amongst the finest of modern British printmaking alongside richard smith, joe tilson, peter blake, patrick caulfield, alan davie, terry frost, david hockney and howard hodgkin. Gary Goldstein’s body of work includes drawings, objects, artist books and paintings. It is informed by Pop Art, Surrealism, Dada and Illuminated Manuscripts. Goldstein’s work draws inspiration from popular sources such as comic books, magazines, advertisements and soft porn from the 1940’s and 1950’s, as well as Kabalistic amulets and the Talmudic page. A well known Israeli art critic, Smadar Shefi, calls Goldstein “a one-man art movement”. Goldstein created his own unique visual language, symbols and style, which uses repetition of both means and images. It is comprised of a personal, private stream of thoughts, of images, of feelings. Goldstein has exhibited extensively in Israel, the United States and Europe. His work is in major museum collections such as Tel Aviv Museum, Israel Museum, Victoria and Albert museum, Tate Gallery, Brooklyn Museum, Museum of Modern Art and N.Y. Public Library. Goldstein has published 14 artists' books, including two limited editions in collaborations with Yehuda Miklaf, John Cage and Arturo Schwartz. Since 1984 till today Goldstein has worked on pages of used books which he finds in second hand book stores. He created over a hundred fifty unique altered books. In the last two decades he creates series of intimate, autonomous drawings, which he draws on pages, cut apart from used books. There is often a great intricacy of details. The layers of meaning are belied by the appealing graphic appearance of the work. The drawings are made in series and each series captures, preserves and archives a particular time in Goldstein’s life. Gary Goldstein was born in Nashville, Tennessee and grew up in Hartford, Connecticut. He studied for his B.A. in Syracuse University, N.Y , followed by an M.F.A in 1977 from Pratt Institute, Brooklyn, N.Y.. In 1977 Goldstein moved to Israel and was a member of Kibbutz Afikim until 1981. While living in Kibbutz Afikim, he founded an arts program at Beit Yerach Regional High School, on the shores of the Sea of Galilee...
