By Utagawa Hiroshige (Ando Hiroshige)

Located in Santa Cruz, CA

An ink on paper, Nishiki-e and Yoko-e woodblock landscape showing travelers entering the coastal town of Oiso on a rainy evening, circa 1850. Signed in Kanji upper left, "Hiroshige Ga" for Utagawa (Ando) Hiroshige (Japanese, 1797-1858) and printed circa 1946 by Gihachiro Okuyama (1907-1981). An exceptionally crisp image with fresh color, printed on traditional Washi paper and showing delicate bokashi gradation of sumi ink in the horizon and upper sky. Sheet Dimensions: 10.25 H x 15.25 W inches. Two sets of travelers arrive in the town of Oiso on a bleak, rainy day. The subtitle of the print is "Tora’s Rain," named after the lover of one of the Soga brothers in the Soga Monogatari, an epic tale of revenge set in the twelfth-century. In the story, the Soga brothers commit a massacre to avenge their father’s murder, and are in turn put to death by the shogun. Tora weeps after learning of her lover's fate and her tears cause a torrential downpour over the town...

Sylvia Schwartz, 'Brush Stroke, sculptural element in Red Plane', 2016, Resin

By Sylvia Schwartz

Located in Darien, CT

Sylvia Schwartz In her structures, silicone molds are cast from both natural and hand-made forms, including clay coils, volcanic rock patterns, seaweed, and the artist’s own fingerprints. Leaving the human trace evident through the repetition of shapes and textures in both the natural and man-made elements, provides a measure of stability, a reference point. These manmade and natural forms merge, revealing our inexplicable dependence on nature. Through this melding of two entities, new life is breathed into the art object. Paper as a primary medium allows Schwartz to sculpt, draw and paint simultaneously. The flow of the pulp (a natural phenomenon in itself) meshes with the molded forms creating a structure that seems to rest on the edge between painting and sculpture. The duality between light and heavy, interior and exterior, planned and accidental, order and chaos, leading ultimately to a sense of life. Red...

At the Shore

At the Shore

Located in Atlanta, GA

"My work principally consists of deeply abstracted figure compositions--intuitive constructions that begin with random marks establishing larger masses of torsos, heads, and limbs in an undefined setting. The emphasis is almost purely on intuition. The figures are born of their surrounding environment, emerging only partially and fugitively from the layers of pigment. A narrative is evident but never overt. A crown, a shield, a boat, a wheel. Though the subject has recently coalesced around my reading of Dante and Shakespeare, the settings remain extremely vague- a beach, an interior, a woodland. The paintings are, in the end, meditations on the relationship between the protagonists in a wordless drama. In my paintings, I use a cold wax medium combined with dry pigments, oil paint, and embedded fragments of burlap. The surfaces eventually build up into a dense, rugged terrain." --Thaddeus Radell

Located in Soquel, CA

"Hey Did We Scratch?" - Abstract Expressionist Composition Detailed and layered composition by Leroy W. Parker (American, 1941). This piece is divided into a checkerboard, with a variety of overlaid patterns and textures. There are several types of handmade paper applied to the canvas, likely made by Parker himself. Signed "Leroy Wheeler Parker" in the lower right corner. "#1" and an up arrow are written on verso. Tag on verso with artist info, title, media, and date. No frame, but the edges of the canvas are painted for a frame-less display. Leroy W. Parker (American, b. 1941) is an artist from Oklahoma who now resides in Lafayette, California. Parker earned his BFA in painting from the California College of Arts and Crafts in 1966, and then went on to earn his MFA in 1968 from the same institution. He is a Professor of Art at San Jose State University. He has taught classes in fine arts, life drawing, ceramics, paper making (which he instituted in 1984), and sculpture since 1969. Parker has also served on the State Art Commission for sculptural grants. One of his pieces is held in the San Jose Museum of Art. Selected Exhibitions: Drawings and Paintings - ACCI Gallery, Berkeley, CA - 1974 “Artistry in Clay” - Forge Patio Art Gallery, Lafayette, CA - 1980 “A Most Elegant Show” - Sunshine Art Gallery, Fair Oaks, CA - 1982 “Flora” - Harcourts Contemporary, San Francisco, CA - 1983 Idea Gallery, Sacramento, CA - 1985 “Multi-Media Man” - Sacramento Center for Textile Arts, Sacramento, CA - 1994 “The Art of the Family” - Works Gallery, San Jose, CA - 1999 Artist’s Statement: I was born in Eagletown, Oklahoma to Southern Baptist parents, and my father was a preacher. We were two boys and six girls in the family. The most mundane things were magical and special to me. I liked to draw, color, make things, and plant things. I loved the woods and the earth, and watching storms with thunder and lightning. We moved from Oklahoma when I was 11. In the late 1950s, I attended Oakland Technical High School where I met artist Sam Richardson...

Virtually Fragile #17

Virtually Fragile #17

By Josh Rowell

Located in London, GB

Josh Rowell Virtually Fragile #17, 2023 Digital Print on hahnemuhle paper with varnish overlay. ed. of 30 62 x 80 cm (unframed) 24.4 x 31.5 inches Edition of 30 Josh Rowell generates his artistic vision by focusing on technological advances that shape our contemporary lives, communicating our increasingly mediated human interactions within the confines of visual art. The artist juxtaposes traditional, handmade techniques; with the intangible nature of the digital age. This position between the real and virtual produces a complex body of work that explores and reshapes information, highlights changes in human interation and celebrates the hand-made in a time that is increasingly being enveloped by the virtual.
