Institutional Lineage and the Golden Age of American Illustration Beigneux's training at the National Academy of Design and the Art Students League placed her within the same institutional lineage that produced America's leading illustrators of the era, including Norman Rockwell, and her steady output of magazine cover work for Collier's and Ladies' Home Journal situates her firmly within the golden age of American editorial illustration that Rockwell's Saturday Evening Post covers helped define. Signed "Stout" on lower right Description William Stout is a multi-media artist who has won numerous awards for his artwork in pulp fiction, dioramas for natural museums, and film work, including two Conan movies, Indiana Jones, Raiders of the Lost Ark, and Pan’s Labyrinth. Stout’s painting, Brunhilde, represents a compilation of the artist’s interests and was inspired by the 19th-century composer Richard Wagner’s epic opera, The Ring of the Nibelung, as part of an art project with the Los Angeles Opera’s 2010 performance of The Ring. The subject, Brunhilde, is based on Norse mythology from the Medieval Poetic Edda and represents the story of a beautiful warrior maiden, a Valkyrie, who was cruelly deceived by her lover. Her father, the supreme god Odin, punished Brunhilde for disobeying him and caused her to fall into everlasting sleep surrounded by a wall of fire. The hero, Siegfried, crossed through the flames and woke the maiden with a kiss. While a student he had small parts in early Oregon Shakespearean Festival productions in Ashland. Following graduation he served in the U.S. Navy for six years. He attended the Philadelphia Museum School of Art, and Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, from which he received his master’s degree. He received a gold medal upon graduating from the Museum School of Art and attended the Academy of Fine Arts on a Cresson scholarship. He also attended evening classes at Fleisher Memorial and performed for two years with the Philadelphia Dance Theater. His paintings – oil on canvas and wood – are exhibited in Philadelphia galleries, including three permanent exhibits in Wagner, Pa., and Minsky History of Theater. He was sponsored for three one-man shows in Philadelphia. While in Florida he worked for Ron Rico Rum. Following his studies, he worked in fabrics, film production, toys and illustrations for publishers with du Pont in New York City. At the same time he maintained a studio and old twine factory over the Cherry Lane Theater.
