About the Item

Serene landscape of the Putah Creek Bridge (now submerged, also known as Monticello Bridge) by Frank Willson Judd (American, 1864-1940). The Putah Creeks flows beneath an old Closed-spandrel red stone arch bridge 1896-1957 submerged intact beneath Lake Berryessa in 1957. When built this bridge was reputed to be the longest stone arch bridge in California and quite possibly the largest West of the Rockies. Signed and dated "Frank Willson Judd 1937" in the lower left corner. Presented in an antique, distressed frame. Painting size: 9"H x 14"W Frame size: 11.75"H x 16.75"W Frank Willson Judd (American, 1864-1940) was born in Connecticut. Judd moved to Santa Barbara, California in 1875, working primarily as a sign painter. In 1890 he settled in San Francisco where he remained. He was employed as the chief artist for the Emporium in San Francisco, spending much of his time decorating and designing elaborate displays based on public holidays. For example, he painted portraits of military personnel, banners, and shields for display on Independence Day. He was a member of the Bohemian Club in San Francisco.

    Frame shows significant signs of age - loss of gilding. One area on painting has been professionally retouched (some loss of paint on underside of bridge). Cleaned and treated with UV-resistant varnish. New hanging hardware included.

Born in Philadelphia in 1875, Martha Walter attended Girls’ High School followed by the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. It was at the Academy that Walter’s artistic talent was discovered. An admiring instructor by the name of William Merritt Chase took young Martha under his wing, giving her both inspiration and direction. She additionally enrolled with Chase at his summer school in Shinnecock, Long Island and in 1903, was awarded the Cresson Traveling Scholarship by the Pennsylvania Academy. This sent Martha Walter on travels to France, Italy, Spain, and Holland, where she attended the Grand Chaumiere and the Academie Julian in Paris.
