Contemporary Mixed Media

CONTEMPORARY STYLE

Used to refer to a time rather than an aesthetic, Contemporary art generally describes pieces created after 1970 or being made by living artists anywhere in the world. This immediacy means it encompasses art responding to the present moment through diverse subjects, media and themes. Contemporary painting, sculpture, photography, performance, digital art, video and more frequently includes work that is attempting to reshape current ideas about what art can be, from Felix Gonzalez-Torres’s use of candy to memorialize a lover he lost to AIDS-related complications to Jenny Holzer’s ongoing “Truisms,” a Conceptual series that sees provocative messages printed on billboards, T-shirts, benches and other public places that exist outside of formal exhibitions and the conventional “white cube” of galleries.

Contemporary art has been pushing the boundaries of creative expression for years. Its disruption of the traditional concepts of art are often aiming to engage viewers in complex questions about identity, society and culture. In the latter part of the 20th century, contemporary movements included Land art, in which artists like Robert Smithson and Michael Heizer create large-scale, site-specific sculptures, installations and other works in soil and bodies of water; Sound art, with artists such as Christian Marclay and Susan Philipsz centering art on sonic experiences; and New Media art, in which mass media and digital culture inform the work of artists such as Nam June Paik and Rafaël Rozendaal.

The first decades of the 21st century have seen the growth of Contemporary African art, the revival of figurative painting, the emergence of street art and the rise of NFTs, unique digital artworks that are powered by blockchain technology.

Major Contemporary artists practicing now include Ai Weiwei, Cecily Brown, David Hockney, Yayoi Kusama, Jeff Koons, Takashi Murakami and Kara Walker.

Have My Back
Located in Ibadan, Oyo
Art has always been a medium to express emotions, tell stories, and convey messages. The artwork titled "Have My Back" is a stunning portrayal of the bond between two women, showcasing the essence of trust, support, and camaraderie. In today's world, the tale of success is often portrayed as a one-person journey, highlighting the individual's hard work, perseverance, and determination. However, this artwork brings to light the indispensable role that trusted mentors and colleagues play in one's journey toward success. The artwork features two women, standing shoulder to shoulder. The women's posture exudes confidence, determination, and a sense of unity. The use of vibrant colors adds a sense of vibrancy to the artwork, creating a visually appealing image. The title of the artwork, "Have My Back," reinforces the idea of trust and support. It speaks volumes about the bond between the two women, highlighting the fact that they are each other's trusted confidants, supporters, and cheerleaders. The artwork's message is particularly relevant in today's world, where women often find themselves struggling to break the glass ceiling and establish themselves in their respective fields. The artwork reminds us that success is not a solo journey, but a collective effort, with the support of trusted mentors and colleagues. The use of two women in the artwork is particularly significant, as women have historically faced significant challenges in their professional and personal lives. The artwork challenges the traditional narrative of women as competitors and highlights the importance of collaboration and support among women. In conclusion, the artwork titled "Have My Back" is a powerful representation of the role that trusted mentors and colleagues play in one's journey toward success. The artwork's message is particularly relevant in today's world, where women often face significant challenges in their professional and personal lives. Mixed media on stretched canvas using image printing, decal paper, acrylics and gel/texture mediums. Gill Storr artist with Wychwood Art. Gill Storr is a London born and based contemporary artist. Following an accomplished career in the graphic design industry, Gill has blended her artistry with her knowledge of design, drawing on previous creative inspirations to add zest and variation to the art pieces she creates. After diligently refining her style over a number of years, she now focuses purely on art and is an emerging artist with work in private collections in the UK and US. Gill has had a standout couple of years, establishing herself as a one to watch within the contemporary art scene, with much more to come in the near future. Gill’s evolution into the art world came about from her desire to add an element of tactility to her work and experience blended into one. Gill coins the phrase ‘deconstructed lens’ to describe her work, creating one-off contemporary pieces that incorporate multiple layers with the traditional medium of paints, oils and gels combined with photographic elements on the canvas, board and paper. Gill’s work serves as a juxtaposition of traditional photography, taking an image that can be stored, re-purposed and viewed from a range of perspectives and creating an original piece that forces the viewer to see the scene purely from the artists’ point...

Metallic Precision Cut Currencies Butterflies Flocking Target Illusions Ablaze
Located in Greenwich, CT
This work is sourced directly from the artist. Butterflies cut from International Currency and gold foil, arranged in the shape of a target, and pinned with stainless steel entomology pins to canvas. Framed in a white, wooden frame. About Charles Patrick Charles Patrick is best known for his intricately cut paper butterflies, suspended like museum specimens on individual entomology pins and clustered together to form icons, logos, and symbols against the backdrop of pristine canvases. Living in a world between the paper and digital ages, these works conjure feelings of nostalgia for the tactility of paper, created from vintage comic books, children’s books, currency, maps, and other obsolete ephemera. This stands in jarring contrast to the clean, pixelated designs that the butterflies form which exchange individual emotion for the universal immediacy of today’s contemporary visual language. Targets, hearts, ohms, and stars pop from the canvas in three-dimension - a fresh departure from the flat screens that are the norm today. With a background in vintage poster restoration, illustration, and printmaking, Charles Patrick combines his love of paper, art history, and design to create works that are both strikingly beautiful and poignantly thought-provoking. Charles lives and works between Cos Cob...

Gift of Life
Located in Ibadan, Oyo
We have been given the gift of life in this perplexing world to become who we ultimately are: creatures of boundless love, caring compassion, and wisdom. Art has the power to evoke a range of emotions, from joy to contemplation to introspection. One such artwork that captures the essence of nature's beauty is "Gift of Life," a painting featuring a young woman sitting and enjoying the natural beauty around her. The artwork depicts a young woman sitting on the grass, surrounded by a lush green forest, and staring at the ocean. The vibrant colors and vivid imagery create a sense of awe and wonder, drawing the viewer into the natural world. The woman's expression is one of tranquility and contentment, inviting the viewer to share in the beauty of the moment. The title of the artwork, "Gift of Life," is a reflection of the artist's appreciation for the beauty of nature and the sense of gratitude that arises from experiencing it. The painting celebrates the beauty of life and the importance of taking time to appreciate and cherish the natural world. The painting also conveys a sense of harmony and balance. The woman's posture and relaxed demeanor suggest a deep sense of inner peace, reflecting the natural harmony that exists between humans and the environment. The lush green foliage and sparkling water contribute to the overall sense of balance and harmony, emphasizing the importance of living in harmony with nature. The use of color and light is also significant in "Gift of Life." The bright, vibrant colors used in the painting evoke a sense of joy and vitality, while the play of light and shadow creates a sense of depth and texture, emphasizing the beauty and complexity of the natural world. In conclusion, "Gift of Life" is a remarkable piece of art that celebrates the beauty of nature and the importance of taking time to appreciate and cherish it. Through its vibrant colors, vivid imagery, and sense of harmony and balance, the painting evokes a sense of wonder and awe that is sure to inspire and captivate viewers for generations to come. As such, it is a masterpiece that speaks to the timeless beauty and importance of the natural world. Shipping Procedure Ships in a well-protected tube from Nigeria This work is unique, not a print or other type of copy. Accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity. About Artist Born and raised in Sagamu - an industrial and agricultural city located about 70km from Lagos, Nigeria's largest city - Damilola's love of art was something her father first recognized and encouraged when she was a teenager. But it wasn't until a few months after his untimely death in late 2016 that she chose to hone her skills and pursue art seriously as a way to honor her father's memory. In 2018, having amassed a collection of work she felt ready to present to the world, Damilola found herself at an impasse: where DOES a young artist showcase their work in Ogun State? Unable to find an answer, she organized the first-ever art show at her college - an academy of science, where she was studying microbiology. Using her own money and recruiting her mother and siblings as her support staff, she opened the show as an opportunity for other creatives from her school - including photographers and makeup artists - as well as artists from other schools. The reactions she received let her know that she was on the right track and she began submitting her work to open calls around the world. A year later, she was awarded the Best Young Visual Artist of 2019 by every day Chapter. Fully self-taught, Damilola Olusegun...
