California Tonalism was art movement that existed in California from circa 1890 to 1920. Tonalist are usually intimate works, painted with a limited palette. Tonalist paintings are softly expressive, suggestive rather than detailed, often depicting the landscape at twilight or evening, when there is an absence of contrast. Tonalist paintings could also be figurative, but in them, the figure was usually out of doors or in an interior in a low-key setting with little detail.
Tonalism had its origins in the works of the French Barbizon school and in the works of American painters who were influenced by them. California Tonalism was born when the emphasis in California landscape painting passed from the grand landscapes of works like those of Thomas Hill and William Keith's early career, to more intimate views of a domesticated landscape. After graduating from Tianjin Academy of Fine Arts, Huang Wei chose to study in Xizang because he was unsatisfied with the procedural education mode. As an ideal and sacred place for many people, Tibet has also provided artistic inspiration for many artists. Huang Wei is not concerned with Tibetan folk customs or landscapes, but with Tibetan unique, faith-based artistic expression. The experience in Tibet was a rare retreat. He was willing to spend time in dialogue with nature as well as with his heart. Through painting, he established an inner field and objected to mountains, water and clouds with his mind. Huang Wei's brushwork does not move restlessly. The rich texture on the picture comes from the countless dots dyeing of the brush tip and rice paper. This technique, which originated from the Traditional Tibetan painting "Thangka", requires a state of extreme silence and numerous repetitions, approaching a state of meditation. Roberto Fabelo (born 1951 Camagüey, Cuba) is a contemporary painter, sculptor, and illustrator. Born in Guáimaro, Camagüey, Fabelo studied at The National Art School and at the Superior Art Institute of Havana. He was a professor and a jury member for very important national and international visual arts contests. The Cuban state awarded him a medal for National Culture and the Alejo Carpentier medal for his outstanding artistic career. Fabelo’s art consists of nude women, who often appear with bird-like features, including a beak and wings. He drew in textbooks and created figures out of the pictures already in the textbook. Another example of his art was watercolor markers used to draw on silk embroidered fabric. His work is exhibited at the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes in Havana, and in the Cuban embassy in Mexico.
