Pink Flamingo's Frank Duffield (British, 1908-1982) original watercolor painting on thick artist paper, unframed size: 10.5 x 11.5 inches condition: overall very good, minor wear to the edges as is normal for an unframed work, minor staining from age/ light to the surface provenance: from a large private collection of this artists work in the UK The artist: Born in Warwick in 1901, Duffield came to Bristol at the age of 23 as an artist at the studio of Mardon Son and Hall. He worked as an illustrator producing designs for cigarette cards, remaining with the company for 37 years until his retirement. He was elected an Artist Member of the Bristol Savages in 1946. He was an extremely keen and regular attender not only in the studio but at all other Savage functions. He was noted for his friendly demeanour and seldom seen without a pipe in his mouth. He was a good pianist and would play popular tunes after the Wednesday evenings’ entertainment for members to join in singing and always with his pipe in his mouth. In 1965 he was commissioned by the Gloucester Regiment to paint a portrait of Brigadier Manley Angell James, VC, DSO, MBE, MC, a Bristol man who won his VC during the first World War. The painting is now in the Imperial War Museum. Frank was made a Life Member in 1973 and died in 1982. Frank Duffiled was a member of the artist group, known as "The Bristol Savages": Founded in 1894 by Ernest Ehlers, he invited his fellow Bristol based artists to spend a friendly evening in his studio to work and talk. At first, meetings were held in their private studios, then as their numbers grew, in rented premises. By 1904 this led to the official founding of the Bristol Savages and the holding ever since, of similar weekly meetings between October and May each year. In 1905 the first exhibition of paintings was held at the premises of George Nichols & Co., an auctioneer in Broad Street, Bristol. Peter Max’s amazing life story, as captivating as his art, was shaped by world events from the start to this day. The literal journey around the world has all the drama of an epic movie. He was born in Berlin in the perilous year of 1937. The next year, his father Jacob recognized that the family could narrowly escape the Nazis by taking the long ocean voyage to join the extensive Jewish refugee community in Shanghai. He has vivid memories living in an old villa across the street from the bright red columns in front of a Buddhist temple where the bells and incense made an indelible impression on him. John Everette Rozelle is an internationally renowned artist from St. Louis, Missouri now living in Banyoles, Girona. He is a masterful collagist, painter and sculptor included in museums and private collections worldwide. John Rozelle was born in St. Louis, Missouri and holds a B.F.A with a major in painting and a minor in sculpture from Washington University and a M.F.A from Fontbonne College. John Rozelle is currently tenured Associate Professor in the Drawing and Painting Department at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Prior to joining the Art Institute faculty he taught drawing, design, painting, and sculpture as an Adjunct Assistant Professor at Fontbonne College. Rozelle has served on numerous occasions as curator, juror, and artist-in-residence for several exhibitions. His twenty years of solo and group shows have included those in New York, Philadelphia, Chicago, St. Louis, Atlanta, and Los Angeles. His work is housed among various corporate collections some of which include: Anheuser Busch, Citibank Corp., AT&T, Borg-Warner, Price Waterhouse, Saks Fifth Avenue, the Seven-Up Company, Ralston Purina, the Westin Hotels and ARCO. Rozelle is currently tenured Associate Professor in the Drawing and Painting Department at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago. His art can be found in over 20 public collections and in over 50 private collections throughout the United States. Provenance New York, Doyle, 14. October 2015, No. 6 The painting and the preparatory drawing resemble the composition of an engraving after Ferraù Fenzoni by Francesco Villamena. Drawing, engraving and painting are almost identical, except for minor differences. Even the measurements nearly correspond: painting (32 x 25,5 cm), drawing (30 x 20,5 cm), engraving (31,1 x 23,5 cm). Dr. Guiseppe Scavizzi confirmed the attribution of the present panting to Fenzoni and he dates it to c. 1590. The inscription on the drawing reads “Ferrau Fenzonio da Faenza invt. esque. . . imp. da Fran: Villamena . . .”. The engraving’s inscription also lists place and date “Ferra Fensionius inventor/F. Villamoena sculpsit Rome/Aspectu fruitur… antra puer/cum Privilegio… 1613”. Interestingly, the engraving is not mirrored as it is in most printing processes. Painting, drawing and engraving are not reversed but the same. It is remarkable to note that there are further paintings by Fenzoni which were engraved in the same order and not reverted. They also show strong parallels regarding the compositions and the measurements (see for example “Deposition of Christ” ). Ferraù Fenzoni was an Italian painter mainly active in Todi. He is also called Il Faenzone after his birthplace (Faenza). He apprenticed in Rome during the papacy of Gregory XIII and contributed to numerous fresco cycles under pope Sixtus V, such as the Loggia della Benedizioni in the Lateran Palace, the frescoes on the walls and vaults of the Scala Santa of the adjacent Basilica of San Giovanni in Laterano, and the decoration in the Sistine library. His expressive canvases straddle the styles of Mannerism and Baroque. In 1594, he moved to Todi. A “Last Judgement” by him is housed in the cathedral of Todi. He returned to Faenza in 1599, where he decorated chapels in the cathedral from 1612 to 1616. In 1622, he completed a “Deposition”, now in the local Pinacoteca. In 1640, Fenzoni was named “cavaliere dello speron d’oro” by Cardinal Colonna and, on 25th April 1634, he was nominated vicar and “castellano of Granarolo”. Fenzoni‘s style is characterized by a mixture of the Mannerism of the Northern Netherlands and the Italian Baroque.
