Expressionist Paintings

EXPRESSIONIST STYLE

While “expressionist” is used to describe any art that avoids naturalism and instead employs a bold use of flattened forms and intense brushwork, Expressionist art formally describes early-20th-century work from Europe that drew on Symbolism and confronted issues such as urbanization and capitalism. Expressionist artists experimented in paintings and prints with skewed perspectives, abstraction and unconventional, bright colors to portray how isolating and anxious the world felt rather than how it appeared.

Between 1905 and 1920, Austrian and German artists, in particular, were inspired by Postimpressionists such as Paul Gauguin and Vincent van Gogh in their efforts to strive for a new authenticity in their work. In its geometric patterns and decorative details, Expressionist art was also marked by eclectic sources like German and Russian folk art as well as tribal art from Africa and Oceania, which the movement’s practitioners witnessed at museums and world’s fairs.

Groups of artists came together to share and promote the themes now associated with Expressionism, such as Die Brücke (The Bridge) in Dresden, which included Erich Heckel, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner and Karl Schmidt-Rottluff and investigated alienation and the dissolution of society in vivid color. In Munich, Der Blaue Reiter (The Blue Rider), a group led by Wassily Kandinsky and Franz Marc, instilled Expressionism with a search for spiritual truths. In his iconic painting The Scream, prolific Norwegian painter Edvard Munch conveyed emotional turmoil through his depiction of environmental elements, such as the threatening sky.

Expressionism shifted around the outbreak of World War I, with artists using more elements of the grotesque in reaction to the escalation of unrest and violence. Printmaking was especially popular, as it allowed artists to widely disseminate works that grappled with social and political issues amid this time of upheaval. Although the art movement ended with the rise of Nazi Germany, where Expressionist creators were labeled “degenerate,” the radical ideas of these artists would influence Neo-Expressionism that emerged in the late 1970s with painters like Jean-Michel Basquiat and Francesco Clemente.

Accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity (Issued by the Gallery) "I'm Alright, Just Here" is a captivating artwork that captures the viewer's attention with its tender depiction of a young girl. The artist skillfully brings the subject to life, with delicate brushstrokes and meticulous attention to detail. The girl's features are portrayed with remarkable precision, revealing a sense of innocence and vulnerability that tugs at the heartstrings. The expression on the girl's face speaks volumes—a delicate blend of calmness and introspection. Her eyes, a window to her soul, radiate a sense of quiet strength and resilience, hinting at a pearl of wisdom beyond her years. Simon's choice to depict the girl alone, with no external distractions, creates a sense of intimacy and invites viewers to connect with her inner world. "I'm Alright, Just Here" explores the themes of solitude, self-reflection, and the resilience of youth. The title itself offers insight into the subject's state of mind—an assurance that she is content and at peace in her presence. It serves as a gentle reminder of the importance of finding solace within oneself, even amidst the chaos and noise of the world. The young girl's presence in the artwork represents the universal experience of navigating the complexities of life. Her portrayal invites viewers to reflect on their journey, prompting questions about the inner strength we possess and the moments of introspection we all seek. She becomes a mirror, reminding us to find moments of stillness and self-care, where we can gather strength and nurture our well-being. The muted color palette employed by Simon contributes to the contemplative mood of the artwork. Soft, earthy tones evoke a sense of serenity and harmony, further enhancing the atmosphere of quiet introspection. The artist's careful attention to the interplay of light and shadow adds depth to the girl's expression, underscoring the layers of emotion and resilience that lie beneath the surface. This painting traces the evolution of Black hair culture, showing how each era defines its own sense of style and identity. From the clean Afro fades of the past to today’s expressive dread styles, the work honors transformation and continuity. The background recalls the classic Nigerian barbershop, where appearance reflected pride and community. The cracked surface links generations, reminding us that while trends shift, the spirit of self-expression endures. Each look carries the rhythm of its time. "Landscape Scene of Mexican Villagers" Expressionistic Oil Painting on Masonite

By Michael Baxte

Located in New York, NY

A strong modernist oil painting depicted in 1971 by Russian painter Michael Baxte. Mostly known for his abstracted figures on canvas or street scenes, this piece is a wonderful representation of his landscape paintings, with expressive use of color, shape, and form. Later in his career, Baxte explores Expressionism, infusing both European and North American stylistic trends. This piece is from later in his career, but we can feel this underlying style throughout. Art measures 18 x 21.75 inches Michael Posner Baxte was born in 1890 in the small town of Staroselje Belarus, Russia. For the first half of the 19th century it was a center of the Chabad movement of Hasidic Jews, but this group was gone by the middle of the 19th century. By the time the Baxte family immigrated to the United States at the beginning of the 20th century, the Jewish population numbered only on the hundreds. The native language of the Baxte family was Yiddish. It is likely that the death of Michael Baxte’s father triggered the family’s immigration. Three older brothers arrived in New York between 1903 and 1905. Michael and his mother, Rebecca, arrived in 1907. By 1910 Michael, his mother, and brother, Joseph, were living in New Orleans and may have spent some time on a Louisiana plantation. Around 1912, Michael Baxte returned to Europe to study the violin. In 1914 he, his mother, and Joseph moved to New York City. Meanwhile, in Algeria, a talented young woman painter, Violette Mege, was making history. Since for the first time, a woman won the prestigious Beaux Art competition in Algeria. At first, the awards committee denied her the prize but, with French government intervention, Mege eventually prevailed. She won again 3 years later and, in 1916, used the scholarship to visit the United States of America. When Violette came to New York, she met Baxte, who was, by then, an accomplished violinist, teacher, and composer. Baxte’s compositions were performed at the Tokyo Imperial Theater, and in 1922 he was listed in the American Jewish Yearbook as one of the prominent members of the American Jewish community. As a music teacher he encouraged individual expression. Baxte stated, “No pupil should ever be forced into imitation of the teacher. Art is a personal experience, and the teacher’s truest aim must be to awaken this light of personality through the patient light of science.” By 1920 Michael Baxte and Violette Mege were living together in Manhattan. Although they claimed to be living as husband and wife, it seems that their marriage did not become official until 1928. On their “unofficial” honeymoon around 1917, in Algiers, Baxte confided to her his ambition to paint. There and later in New Mexico where the wonderful steeped sunlight approximates the coloring of Algiers, she taught him his heart’s desire. He never had any other teacher. She never had any other pupil. For ten years she devoted all her time, energy, and ambition to teaching, encouraging, inspiring him. Then in 1928, their mutual strivings were rewarded, as his works were being chosen as one of the two winners in the Dudensing National Competition for American Painters. Out of 150 artists from across the country participated in the Dudensing, and Michael Posner Baxte and, Robert Fawcett, were the winners. In his 1924 naturalization application, he indicated that he was sometimes known as “Michael Posner Baxte.” One of the witnesses to his application was Bernard Karfiol, a Jewish American artist. That’s when Michael may...

Adventure Story 1

By Olamilekan Bello

Located in Ibadan, Oyo

"Adventure Story" is a homage to the rich cultural traditions passed down through generations. The artwork's protagonist, a male hunter, stands as a representation of the deep-rooted connection between man and nature, as well as the preservation of traditional practices. The wooden local gun he carries symbolizes both the tools of his trade and the ancestral knowledge that has been handed down through time. Bello's artwork prompts us to appreciate the importance of preserving and honoring our cultural heritage. It serves as a reminder that our traditions, rituals, and stories hold invaluable wisdom and provide a link to our past, helping us understand who we are as individuals and as a collective. The central theme of "Adventure Story" revolves around the spirit of adventure, encapsulated by the hunter in the artwork. The headlamp tied around his head signifies his readiness to explore the unknown and face the challenges that lie ahead. It speaks of the courage to navigate unfamiliar territories and the determination to embrace new experiences. The headlamp, traditionally used to illuminate darkness, can also be interpreted metaphorically as a beacon of knowledge and enlightenment. It symbolizes the hunter's quest for wisdom and understanding, highlighting the importance of seeking knowledge as we venture into the uncharted territories of life. Olamilekan Bello...

Young Girl with Baby Oil Painting 1970s Spanish Impressionist Portrait Emotional

By Amadeo Freixas Vivo

Located in Sitges, Barcelona

Young Girl with Baby Oil Painting 1970s Spanish Impressionist Portrait Emotional Figurative Artwork Medium: Oil on board Period: 1970–1979 Date: circa 1975 Condition: Good condition consistent with age Dimensions: Height: 46 cm (18.12 in) Width: 38 cm (14.97 in) Frame: Unframed Origin: Spain A tender and emotionally engaging oil painting depicting a young girl holding a baby, executed in Spain circa 1975. Rather than a traditional maternal scene, the composition captures a more unusual and compelling dynamic: a child caring for another child. This subtle shift introduces a layer of emotional complexity, where innocence and responsibility coexist. The girl’s expressive gaze becomes the central anchor of the composition, conveying a quiet intensity that draws the viewer in. The artist employs loose yet confident brushwork, with an earthy palette enriched by soft pink tones that enhance the warmth of the scene. This type of subject—intimate, psychological, and slightly unconventional—offers collectors something beyond decorative appeal: a narrative moment suspended in time. Its small scale further increases its charm and versatility, making it ideal for refined interiors or curated gallery walls. A distinctive example of late 20th-century Spanish figurative impressionism, with strong emotional resonance. Amadeo Freixas Vivo (1912–2004) was a Spanish painter known for his figurative and impressionist works. Throughout his career, he developed a personal style focused on intimate scenes and expressive portraiture, often exploring themes of everyday life and human emotion. girl with baby painting, figurative oil painting, spanish painting 1970s, impressionist portrait, child portrait painting...
