Expressionist Paintings

EXPRESSIONIST STYLE

While “expressionist” is used to describe any art that avoids naturalism and instead employs a bold use of flattened forms and intense brushwork, Expressionist art formally describes early-20th-century work from Europe that drew on Symbolism and confronted issues such as urbanization and capitalism. Expressionist artists experimented in paintings and prints with skewed perspectives, abstraction and unconventional, bright colors to portray how isolating and anxious the world felt rather than how it appeared.

Between 1905 and 1920, Austrian and German artists, in particular, were inspired by Postimpressionists such as Paul Gauguin and Vincent van Gogh in their efforts to strive for a new authenticity in their work. In its geometric patterns and decorative details, Expressionist art was also marked by eclectic sources like German and Russian folk art as well as tribal art from Africa and Oceania, which the movement’s practitioners witnessed at museums and world’s fairs.

Groups of artists came together to share and promote the themes now associated with Expressionism, such as Die Brücke (The Bridge) in Dresden, which included Erich Heckel, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner and Karl Schmidt-Rottluff and investigated alienation and the dissolution of society in vivid color. In Munich, Der Blaue Reiter (The Blue Rider), a group led by Wassily Kandinsky and Franz Marc, instilled Expressionism with a search for spiritual truths. In his iconic painting The Scream, prolific Norwegian painter Edvard Munch conveyed emotional turmoil through his depiction of environmental elements, such as the threatening sky.

Expressionism shifted around the outbreak of World War I, with artists using more elements of the grotesque in reaction to the escalation of unrest and violence. Printmaking was especially popular, as it allowed artists to widely disseminate works that grappled with social and political issues amid this time of upheaval. Although the art movement ended with the rise of Nazi Germany, where Expressionist creators were labeled “degenerate,” the radical ideas of these artists would influence Neo-Expressionism that emerged in the late 1970s with painters like Jean-Michel Basquiat and Francesco Clemente.

Star Gazing, Original Painting
Located in San Francisco, CA

Artist Comments
A woman lies under a vibrant night sky, the stars and planets illuminating her form. Bold colors and energetic directional brushwork add a hypnotizing energy to the composition. This piece is artist Diana Elena Chelaru's personal interpretation of the vast space.

About the Artist
Artist Diana Elena Chelaru creates vibrant expressionist works that explore human emotion and the cosmos. “Art is a means of communication, a way to express my thoughts, hopes, and joys,” says Diana. She uses form, lines, and color to bring her imaginative compositions to life, with inspiration drawn from Byzantine mosaics and Gustav Klimt’s decorative patterns. Diana received her BFA in Painting from George Enescu Art University and an MA in Art History from Queens College. Diana’s creative process is fluid and intuitive, guided by her emotions in the moment, with music as a constant companion. Her studio, located in the basement of her home, is kept clean and organized. When she’s not creating, Diana enjoys spending quality time with her family.

"Copse", oil painting, landscape, abstract, trees, field, sky, light, copper
Located in Toronto, Ontario
"Copse" is an oil painting with chalk and graphite on wood panel, and measures 16" high by 12" wide. It is finished with a clear resin across the surface, lending the artwork a particular warmth and liquidity that is rare and lovely to behold. Typical of the artist, the painting is a mystery despite its apparent simplicity – the landscape with trees on the horizon, the wide full sky bearing down with clouds and light. The picture surface is very interesting – drawn lines and painterly brushstrokes to be sure, but note the speed and swift conviction of those brushstrokes. All of it held, as if in time, by the resin layer acting as a lens to both transmit this picture and admit light to the picture. A true artifact. From Will Hudson...

Spring of Hope
Located in Ibadan, Oyo
"Spring of Hope," encapsulates the essence of the artwork. Just as spring represents a season of rejuvenation and new beginnings, the woman in this piece embodies the idea of hope blooming anew. The flowing scarf, with its gentle and fluid movement, conjures images of a gentle breeze, carrying with it the promise of better days ahead. Oyindamola's use of color in "Spring of Hope" is both intentional and evocative. She employs soft, pastel hues that evoke a sense of serenity and optimism. The woman's visage radiates tranquility, and her eyes suggest a moment of introspection and inner peace. It's as if she is embracing the beauty of the present while eagerly anticipating the opportunities that the future may hold. The central figure in "Spring of Hope" is rendered with remarkable attention to detail. Oyindamola captures the elegance and grace of the woman, who exudes a sense of poise and strength. Her closed eyes convey a sense of trust and surrender, suggesting a willingness to embrace the unknown with open arms. Symbolism plays a crucial role in this artwork. The scarf, flowing around the woman's neck, is a powerful symbol of continuity and resilience. It represents the idea that no matter the challenges faced, there is always a thread of hope that connects us to a brighter future. The scarf's circular form also signifies the cyclical nature of life, where endings inevitably give way to new beginnings. "Spring of Hope" is a painting that resonates deeply with viewers, inviting them to reflect on the ever-present possibility of renewal in their own lives. The closed eyes of the woman encourage introspection and a sense of connection with the universal human experience of longing for better days. Oyewumi Oyindamola...

Rare Israeli Modernist Figurative Abstract Gouache Painting
Located in Surfside, FL
Mixed Media, Watercolor and Gouache Bergner, Yosl (Vladimir Jossif) (b Vienna, 13 Oct 1920). surrealist, surrealism. belongs to the generation of people uprooted from childhood landscapes and forced by circumstance to build a life elsewhere. Uniquely, he became an Israeli without shedding his Jewish cosmopolitan-refugee identity, an identity he zealously guarded in the melting pot of Israel of the "fifties" and "sixties". In the years that have passed since he acquired his art education at the Melbourne National Gallery Art School in Australia, concepts in the art world have changed many times over. from the Jewish paintings and the depictions of Australian Aborigines through the children of safed, the wall paintings, the masks, the angels and kings, the still lifes, the "Surrealistic" paintings, the toys and flowers, the paintings inspired by the Bird-head Haggada, the Kafka paintings, the Pioneers, the Kimberley fantasy (about his father's excursion in 1933 to northern Australia, in search of a "territory for the Jews"), Brighton Beach and the seascapes inspired by Eugene Boudin, through the chairs in the "Kings of Nissim Aloni" episode to the "Zionists" and the recent "Tahies". "During the six years that Bergner has lived in Israel," wrote Eugene KoIb, Direct. or of the Tel Aviv Museum, in the catalog of the Bergner exhibit in 1957, "he has established himself among Israeli artists." Bergner was indeed one of the artists who represented Israel in the Venice Biennial (1956; 1958) and in the Sao Paulo Biennial in 1957; this, in spite of the fact that Yosl Bergner did not harness his art to serve the Zionist ethos, that being, at the time, the order of the day (his paintings were in fact rejected at first as being those of a "Diaspora Jew"); he didn't "naturalize" himself by alliance to the country's landscape or its special light, nor did he turn to abstract painting. Face Your Fears 2
Located in Ibadan, Oyo
"Face Your Fears" by Simon Obeka is a thought-provoking artwork that captures the essence of courage and self-discovery. At its core, the painting features a young woman adorned in a striking red scarf, her expression poised and determined, as if ready to confront the challenges that lie ahead. The title, "Face Your Fears," serves as a powerful invitation for viewers to confront their fears and embrace the journey of personal growth and empowerment. Through the symbolism of the red scarf, which can evoke feelings of passion, determination, and vitality, Obeka conveys the idea that facing one's fears is not only a daunting task but also an opportunity for transformation and renewal. The woman's confident posture and unwavering gaze suggest a willingness to confront adversity head-on, embodying the resilience and inner strength required to overcome obstacles. Whether literal or metaphorical, her journey serves as an inspiration for viewers to confront their fears and pursue their aspirations with courage and conviction. Obeka's artwork serves as a reminder that while fear may be a natural part of the human experience, it is through facing and overcoming our fears that we can unlock our true potential and live life to the fullest. "Face Your Fears" encourages viewers to embrace discomfort as a catalyst for growth and to embark on their own journey towards self-discovery and empowerment. Adventure Story 1
Located in Ibadan, Oyo
"Adventure Story" is a homage to the rich cultural traditions passed down through generations. The artwork's protagonist, a male hunter, stands as a representation of the deep-rooted connection between man and nature, as well as the preservation of traditional practices. The wooden local gun he carries symbolizes both the tools of his trade and the ancestral knowledge that has been handed down through time. Bello's artwork prompts us to appreciate the importance of preserving and honoring our cultural heritage. It serves as a reminder that our traditions, rituals, and stories hold invaluable wisdom and provide a link to our past, helping us understand who we are as individuals and as a collective. The central theme of "Adventure Story" revolves around the spirit of adventure, encapsulated by the hunter in the artwork. The headlamp tied around his head signifies his readiness to explore the unknown and face the challenges that lie ahead. It speaks of the courage to navigate unfamiliar territories and the determination to embrace new experiences. The headlamp, traditionally used to illuminate darkness, can also be interpreted metaphorically as a beacon of knowledge and enlightenment. It symbolizes the hunter's quest for wisdom and understanding, highlighting the importance of seeking knowledge as we venture into the uncharted territories of life. Olamilekan Bello...
