Hans Lauer emerges as a sympathetic chronicler of Patagonian light, a German-born landscapist who made Argentina his country and Bariloche his enduring motif. Born in Nuremberg in 1902, he emigrated to Argentina in 1920 and fixed his practice in the Nahuel Huapi region, painting the blue-white atmospheres of the lake basin and the sheltering stands of native forest with a direct, self-taught hand; he remained rooted there until his death in Bariloche in 1989. Contemporary reports place him working across northern Patagonia—San Martín de los Andes among his circuits—where he translated the temperate Andean palette into sober oils and watercolors keyed to weather and season rather than to metropolitan fashions. Autodidact by formation, he belongs to that émigré cohort who stitched European discipline to local terrain, and by the 1950s–60s his production reflects an assured, observational plein-air habit that privileges structure over effect. While Bariloche provided the studio and the subject, his name also circulates in Buenos Aires contexts through collectors and dealers who sought Patagonian views during the mid-century tourism boom, an afterlife that helped keep his vistas in the market even as he remained geographically anchored to the south. A strong modernist oil painting depicted in 1971 by Russian painter Michael Baxte. Mostly known for his abstracted figures on canvas or street scenes, this piece is a wonderful representation of his landscape paintings, with expressive use of color, shape, and form. Later in his career, Baxte explores Expressionism, infusing both European and North American stylistic trends. This piece is from later in his career, but we can feel this underlying style throughout. Art measures 18 x 21.75 inches Michael Posner Baxte was born in 1890 in the small town of Staroselje Belarus, Russia. For the first half of the 19th century it was a center of the Chabad movement of Hasidic Jews, but this group was gone by the middle of the 19th century. By the time the Baxte family immigrated to the United States at the beginning of the 20th century, the Jewish population numbered only on the hundreds. The native language of the Baxte family was Yiddish. It is likely that the death of Michael Baxte’s father triggered the family’s immigration. Three older brothers arrived in New York between 1903 and 1905. Michael and his mother, Rebecca, arrived in 1907. By 1910 Michael, his mother, and brother, Joseph, were living in New Orleans and may have spent some time on a Louisiana plantation. Around 1912, Michael Baxte returned to Europe to study the violin. In 1914 he, his mother, and Joseph moved to New York City. Meanwhile, in Algeria, a talented young woman painter, Violette Mege, was making history. Since for the first time, a woman won the prestigious Beaux Art competition in Algeria. At first, the awards committee denied her the prize but, with French government intervention, Mege eventually prevailed. She won again 3 years later and, in 1916, used the scholarship to visit the United States of America. When Violette came to New York, she met Baxte, who was, by then, an accomplished violinist, teacher, and composer. Baxte’s compositions were performed at the Tokyo Imperial Theater, and in 1922 he was listed in the American Jewish Yearbook as one of the prominent members of the American Jewish community. As a music teacher he encouraged individual expression. Baxte stated, “No pupil should ever be forced into imitation of the teacher. Art is a personal experience, and the teacher’s truest aim must be to awaken this light of personality through the patient light of science.” By 1920 Michael Baxte and Violette Mege were living together in Manhattan. Although they claimed to be living as husband and wife, it seems that their marriage did not become official until 1928. On their “unofficial” honeymoon around 1917, in Algiers, Baxte confided to her his ambition to paint. There and later in New Mexico where the wonderful steeped sunlight approximates the coloring of Algiers, she taught him his heart’s desire. He never had any other teacher. She never had any other pupil. For ten years she devoted all her time, energy, and ambition to teaching, encouraging, inspiring him. Then in 1928, their mutual strivings were rewarded, as his works were being chosen as one of the two winners in the Dudensing National Competition for American Painters. Out of 150 artists from across the country participated in the Dudensing, and Michael Posner Baxte and, Robert Fawcett, were the winners. He is known for Architectural Townscape, factory, industrial site and figure painting. A student of Albertus Gerhard Hulshoff Pol (1883-1957), a well-known painter and art teacher. The painter and draftsman was born in Nieuwkoop, but moved with his parents to Hilversum in 1924, where they opened a dairy. Jan delivered orders by bicycle and, during his travels, stumbled upon Dekker, a frame shop, where he met local painters and their work. There, he learned the framer's trade and, in his spare time, drew buildings and industrial complexes in Amsterdam. A painter of towns, figures, factories and industrial sites at the border of the cities and Parisian cafe scenes. Rijlaarsdam received a Royal allowance. He painted in a figurative expressionist style. Influenced by George Hendrik Breitner, a leading figure of Amsterdam Impressionism, as well as Willem Witsen, Eduard Karsen and Willem de Zwart. He was among the group of painters who depicted daily life in Amsterdam. In 1928, he cycled to Bruges and Antwerp, Belgium to further develop his drawing skills. He returned there regularly. He gradually gained recognition, and in 1932, he received a Royal Grant, which allowed him to pay for lessons. He joined various painting associations in Hilversum, Amsterdam (Sint Lucas), and the Gooi region. His work has a distinctive style. It wasn't until the 1950s that he finally visited Paris, France. An informal member of the "École de Paris" School of Paris. This became his favorite destination; the vibrant Parisian city life drew him in. Later, Rijlaarsdam also spent a lot of time in Spain, especially Barcelona where he was exposed to the works of Pablo Picasso and Salvador Dali. Jan Rijlaarsdam left behind an impressive and highly versatile oeuvre, encompassing styles, materials, and techniques. Ranging from realistic to impressionist and expressionism, with even forays into abstraction and abstract expressionism. Rijlaarsdam consistently managed to surprise. Jan Rijlaarsdam's favorite subjects were gathering homeless people and prostitutes in cafés. In the tradition of Isaac Israëls and Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, he was a true interpreter of city life. He was a member of St. Lucas, an art society in Amsterdam, The Gooise Art Society and the Society of Figurative Art in Hilversum (Vereniging van Beeldende Kunst). Works by Rijlaarsdam are in possession of the Singer Museum in Laren. The artist died February 16, 2007 in Baarn, Netherlands.
