"VALMY! (L'Estampe Moderne), " Lithograph after Drawing by Adolphe Willette

By Adolphe Willette

Located in Milwaukee, WI

"VALMY! (L'Estampe Moderne)" is a print watermarked PL BAS after a drawing by Adolphe Willette. It depicts a general with his army and a young girl. 15 3/4" x 12" art 23" x 19 1/4" frame Adolphe Léon Willette (30 July 1857 – 4 February 1926) was a French painter, illustrator, caricaturist, and lithographer, as well as an architect of the famous Moulin Rouge cabaret. Willette ran as an "anti-semitic" candidate in the 9th arrondisement of Paris for the September 1889 legislative elections. Biography Willette was born in Châlons-sur-Marne. He studied for four years at the École des Beaux-Arts under Cabanel, training which gave him a unique position among the graphic humorists of France. Whether comedy or tragedy, dainty triviality or political satire, his work is instinct with the profound sincerity of the artist. He set Pierrot upon a lofty pedestal among the imaginary heroes of France, and established Mimi Pinson, frail, lovable, and essentially good-hearted, in the affections of the nation. Willette is at once the modern Watteau of the pencil, and the exponent of sentiments that move the more emotional section of the public. Always a poet, and usually gay, fresh, and delicate, in his presentation of idylls exquisitely dainty and characteristically Gallic, illustrating the more "charming" side of love, often pure and sometimes extremely materialistic. Willette frequently reveals himself bitter and fierce, even ferocious, in his hatreds, being a violent though at the same time a generous partisan of political ideas, furiously compassionate with love and pity for the people whether they be ground down under the heel of political oppression, or are merely the victims ot unrequited love, suffering all the pangs of graceful anguish that are born of scornful treatment. There is charm even in his thrilling apotheosis of the guillotine, and in the introduction into his caricatures of the figure of Death itself. The artist was a prolific contributor to the French illustrated press under the pseudonyms "Cemoi", "Pierrot", "Louison", "Bebe", and "Nox", but more often under his own name. He illustrated Melandri's Les Pierrots and Les Giboulles d'avril, Le Courrier français, and published his own Pauvre Pierrot and other works, in which he tells his stories in scenes in the manner of Busch. He decorated several "brasseries artistiques" with wall-paintings, stained glass, &c., notably Le Chat noir and La Palette d'or, and he painted the highly imaginative ceiling for La Cigale...

"H. L'Illusion (L'Estampe Moderne I)" is an original color lithograph by Henri Bellery-Desfontaines. This piece depicts a nude child before a dream-like woman in a blue translucent robe. This piece was published in the French Art Nouveau publication L'Estampe Moderne. Signed in plate. 15 3/4" x 12" art Henri Bellery-Desfontaines , born with Paris in 1867 and dead the October 6th 1909, is a French Noveau artist Jack-of-All- Trades, who produced tables, illustrations, posters, lithographies, drawings of carpet, pieces of furniture and banknotes, and even dabbled with decoration & architecture. In the 1900s, Paris was the perfect place for a group of young artists influenced by artistic currents like neogothic style or symbolism. Most of them started as painters and they switched later to decorative arts, attracted by the idea of an ever-present art, a lifeless art, a total art. Henri Bellery-Desfontaines was a member of this group and he started as as painter in Pierre-Victor Galland’s atelier. He entrusted him the decorative motifs which would frame Panthéon de Paris' drawings: Maillot, Bonnat, Humbert and specially Jean-Paul Laurens, who proposed him to join his atelier in l’École des Beaux-Arts de Paris. With him, he decorated l'Hôtel de Ville de Paris or Le Salon Lobau, Henri Bellery-Desfontaines is thought to have Luc-Olivier Merson (1846-1920) as a teacher. During his years as a student, he started to illustrate magazines and books of tales and in 1895, Bellery-Desfontaines opted rapidly for illustration, probably due to financial problems, and he participated in magazines such as L’Image, L’Estampe Moderne or L’Almanach des Bibliophiles. This year, the Salon des Artistes Français hosted one of his design of tapestry. From 1900 on, he gradually evolved toward an ambitious decorative artist, making tapestries and furniture for rich leaders and patrons. Bellery-Desfontaines was an important artist of his epoch, and he took part in numerous events like Bal de...

Located in Hinsdale, IL

DUYCK, EDOUARD (1872 -1897) CRESPIN, ADOLPH (1859 –1944) "Hippodrome des Art" Original lithograph from "Les Maitres de L'Affiche" series Printed by Imprimerie Chaix, Paris Bearing MDL stamp lower right, from issue #6, 1894. Plate #28 Unframed Size:11 3/8 x 15 3/4” The "Les Maitres de l'Affiche" series was offered as a subscription series to collectors every month for 60 months, from December 1895 through November 1900. The "Maitres de l'Affiche," were issued as separate numbered sheets, referred to as "plates". They were numbered, with the printers name "Imprimerie Chaix," in the margin at the bottom left hand corner, "PL.1" to "PL.240." In the margin at the bottom right hand corner of each, is a blind embossed stamp from a design of Cheret's. The smaller format and the fact the "Maitres" were a paid subscription series, allowed Imprimerie Chaix to use the latest state of the art printing techniques, not normally used in the large format posters due to cost. A very high quality of paper was used, where as the large format posters were printed on lesser quality newsprint, due to cost and a short expected life span. This explains why the quality of the printing, in the "Maitres de l'Affiche," usually far exceeds that of their larger counterparts. "...Posters were created by the team of Duyck & Crespin, whose close collaborative efforts garnered them the nickname 'the Siamese twins.' Between their first joint attempt at poster-making in 1885-1886 and Duyck's death in 1897, the duo produced a large corpus of works... as well as set designs and costumes for the theatre " (Brussels p.76) This is a Belgian poster for the Ferme de Frahinfaz, on the Hippodrome des Art road near Spa. A Conundrum in the Kitchen

By Frank Hyde

Located in Missouri, MO

Frank Hyde (British 1849-1937) "A Conundrum in the Kitchen" c. 1900 Oil on Canvas Signed Lower Left Image: 37.5 x 57.5 inches Framed: 44 x 64.5 inches From the Maidstone Museum, UK: Hyde was born in Surrey in 1849 and spent a large amount of time in London during his youth. His father had been in the army but retired to live the life of a gentleman upon inheriting the family seat, Hyde End Manor in Berkshire. Hyde, however, would later inherit and sell the Manor. As a young man, Hyde trained as an artist at the Royal Academy, London, and his subsequent career revealed striking artistic versatility. His subjects varied from the portrayal of real, dramatic events to comic characters commissioned by the card manufacturer Raphael Tuck. Starting out as a 1st Lieutenant in the Royal Engineers, Hyde moved on to begin his career as a war artist during the Franco-Prussian war of 1870-71, producing drawings for ‘The Graphic’, an illustrated weekly publication. Hyde married Constance Mary Louise Felgate in 1876, but she died less than a year later. While he travelled extensively throughout his life after Constance’s, death Hyde purchased a villa in Capri where he met Rosina Ferrara, whom he used as a model, and John Singer Sargent, with whom he shared a studio. Hyde is perhaps best known for his paintings of Capri...
