The Ability to See Color

The Ability to See Color

By Lisa Meek

Located in New York, NY

Lisa Meek transforms books by cutting their bindings, painting the pages and folding them to create floral blossoms rooted in the words of the authors. Each page has been lightly tinted adding a dimension of color to the work without obscuring the words on the page Lisa Meek’s sculptures, collectively titled Biblio Botany, possess a duality that is reflective of the artist herself and her eclectic range of interests. As a practicing medical professional with an inherent artistic drive, Lisa Meek has made impactful contributions to those she interacts with in both office and gallery spaces. The polarity of these worlds conglomerate beautifully, manifesting through her notable success in both fields. Lisa’s pursuit of a cosmetological career has always been paralleled with a desire to create, to utilize her artistic prowess in order to share her perspective and initiate important conversations. This desire has been integral to her experience since early adolescence, when she began acting upon her creative drive by depicting nature scenes.  The process in which Lisa assembles her sculptures is quite complex. In order to achieve depth and nuance, Lisa employs considerable intention throughout the planning process. With great admiration and ponder, Lisa cuts pages out of various literary works which highlight topics she wishes to discuss, human rights often being central. Attention to detail is vital; certain books possess qualities unsuitable for paint and shape manipulation. Every aspect of her work is deliberate; the symbolism associated with color and flower species, the pairing of literature, the minute details of shape and object placement. This layered production process exemplifies Lisa’s contemplative nature.  Prior to 2018, the majority of Lisa’s work was created on traditional canvas. Spurring from her exposure to contemporary mediums, she was able to redefine her creative denotations and expand her personal definition of art. The surface work of Liza Lou...

Study for the Rose: Contemporary Half Life Bronze Sculpture

Study for the Rose: Contemporary Half Life Bronze Sculpture

By Richard MacDonald

Located in Laguna Beach, CA

“Study for the Rose, Half Life” draws on Richard MacDonald’s highly developed sensitivity for the experience of the dancer, and displays all the quiet beauty of a private moment of reflection. In half-life size the supple and delicate form of the ballerina has real substance—an almost-breathing presence that immediately draws us to wonder at the thoughts of the ballerina toying with the ribbon on her shoe. Her youth and preoccupation give a sense of life and warmth to the sculpture; the beautiful line of her arm draped over the bar is a study in the effortless grace of the well-trained dancer. Her soft cheek rests on her shoulder, and we feel the tenderness of her childish daydream—yet she holds the posture of an accomplished professional. A study in contrasts, this piece has the timeless appeal associated with the ballet works by Degas, with the unmistakable character that can only be attributed to Richard MacDonald himself. Waterhole

By Sherry Owens

Located in New Orleans, LA

Sherry Owens Waterhole, 2017 Crepe myrtle, dye, paint, wax 24 x 36 x 36 inches For over 30 years, sculptor Sherry Owens has used the sinewy crepe myrtle tree to tell her story of the Texas landscape, death, renewal, beauty, and of today’s growing environmental concerns. Remnants of personal stories, visions and observations in nature are the driving forces in her work. She believes that what we see and do in our daily lives leaves a mark on our planet. It is the direct impact of human activities on the natural world, which is visualized in her artistic practice. She creates connections with nature using crepe myrtle trees found along the side of the road. Each stick is hand-carved and cut to fit, then laid in place and secured with a small myrtle peg. What takes precedence in the laborious process is the importance of detail and evidence of the artist’s hand and her interaction with the materials. Sherry Owens is a native Texan, currently living and working in Dallas, TX. She received a BFA from Southern Methodist University. Recent Texas solo exhibitions include The Grace Museum; Cris Worley Fine Arts; Martin Museum of Art; Art Museum of Southeast Texas; and a two-person site-specific installation at the Umlauf Sculpture Garden & Museum. She was also included in recent exhibitions at the Amon Carter Museum of American Art, TX and the Ogden Museum of Southern Art, LA. She has exhibited internationally in Austria, Denmark, Germany, Greece, India, Japan, Peru, and Turkey. Her work is currently on view in the Ground Zero 360 Remembrance Exhibition at the Museum of Biblical Art...
