"Protected" Photograph Printed on Silk with Hand Stitched Embellishments, Framed
Located in St. Louis, MO
Luanne Rimel is an artist, curator, instructor, and currently the Director of Education Programs at Craft Alliance Art Center in St. Louis, Missouri. Her work is layered with historical dialogue and tactile intrigue through both technique and concept. Rimel prints her original photography on repurposed flour-sack cloths using a wide-format inkjet printer. Detailed sections of the image are created and layered, collaged and hand stitched onto the cloth, referencing earlier domestic practices of mending and repair, reuse and repurposing. The delicate, repetitive hand quilting across the surface creates shadows and textures and alludes to the marking of time. Her photographic imagery and textile work has been exhibited both nationally and internationally, including Japan, China and Korea, and is in many private and corporate collections. Her work is traveling in Quilt National 2013 and was in QN 2011. She has exhibited in the 2012, 2013 and 2014 Smithsonian Craft Shows. Her work will also be included in the new book, Art Quilts of the Midwest, published by the University of Iowa Press. Other exhibitions include a solo exhibit at the Missouri Botanical Gardens, St. Louis, MO, Art Quilt Elements, Wayne, PA, and the Chicago Cultural Center, Chicago IL. Luanne received an MFA in Fibers from Southern Illinois University and has taught numerous workshops and classes around the country. Magnum Opus (Champagne)
Located in Montreal, Quebec
Ed. of 20 Disclaimer Sales can affect the inventory and the shipping time for works. Please contact the seller to confirm availability of works. Felt artist Lucy Sparrow is one of the most exciting and original artists working in the UK today. Her practice is quirky yet subversive, luring the audience in with her soft, tactile, colorful felt creations before hitting them hard with her comment on subjects from the demise of the traditional high street to censorship in pornography. She took the art world by storm in Summer 2014 with the opening of her fully stocked felt Cornershop installation in London’s East End. With queues around the block and wall to wall media coverage, the installation was both a commercial and critical success. In 2016, the BBC commissioned Lucy to recreates the Crown Jewels in felt, to celebrate HRH The Queen’s official 90th birthday. In May 2017, Lucy undertook her first solo show in the US, opening The Convenience Store, a New York bodega stocked with 9,000 felted...

Located in Natick, MA
Virginia Mahoney’s “Less” is a mixed-media sculpture in vest form that is primarily green with many prints and variations, and has attached ceramic tags in shades of green, on which words, referring to being less than others, are handwritten in metallic gold acrylic. Brass wires projecting inside emphasize the discomfort one feels when feeling “not enough.” Handwork, threads, and stitching are prominent. This lightweight but sturdy piece is 17 x 14 x 10 inches. “Less” is part of an ongoing series of garment sculptures, which manifest sensations of experiencing uncomfortable situations, doubt, regret, background thoughts or personal barriers. Mahoney devises unconventional ways of working with materials, and is inspired by new ideas in the process. Virginia Mahoney is a mixed-media sculptor in the Boston area, whose work reveals a fascination with words, ambiguity, and diverse methods of making. She reflects on sensation, reaction, and thought, using laborious processes and unexpected material combinations. Her work has been exhibited frequently in the eastern and central United States. Mahoney is represented by Fountain Street...

Black on Black Mobile Acrylic Painting 3-D Shaped Canvas, Hanging Mobile
Located in Denver, CO
Mid-century modern abstract 3-D painting by Denver modernist Angelo Di Benedetto (1913-1992), circa 1950, the shaped 3-dimensional canvas is painted with black on black with acrylic paint. Created to be hung as a mobile, the work is finished on both sides. Measures 22 3⁄4 inches in diameter x 9 inches in depth. About the Artist: Born New Jersey 1913 Died Central City, CO 1992 The son of Italian immigrants from the Salerno province in southern Italy, as a teenager Di Benedetto worked to study at the Cooper Union Art School in New York City (1930-34) from which he graduated with a certificate in freehand drawing. He won a scholarship to the Boston Museum Art School where he studied for three years, beginning in 1934. In 1937, he entered his first juried exhibition at the Montclair Museum in New Jersey, winning first prize and first honorable mention. In December 1938, the Royal Netherlands Steamship Line sent him on a two-month ethnological study trip to Haiti, his first exposure to a different environment outside the United States. In 1940, his Haitian paintings were exhibited at the Montross Gallery in New York – his first solo show. Before World War II, Di Benedetto traveled extensively around the United States doing regional paintings. During the war in 1941, Di Benedetto volunteered for a secret mission based in Eritrea, Africa before the Allied invasion. Following Africa, he served as an orientation officer and aerial photographic officer in the District of Columbia. In 1945 he was assigned to a mapping unit at Buckley Airfield in Denver where he served until his discharge in 1946. Like many other servicemen stationed at the time in Colorado, Di Benedetto chose to remain in Colorado, impressed by the state’s physical grandeur and healthful climate. He settled in the old mining town of Central City in 1947. In 1949 Di Benedetto and his wife, ceramist Lee Porzio, opened the Benpro Art School in his studio where he conducted summer art classes. In 1950, Di Benedetto teamed up with Frank Vavra...

As much as Takei’s pieces are Cubist in nature there is also an unmistakable Asian influence in the working method of the Japanese native. Takei’s pieces are minimal in nature, but powerful in presence and seem to reference the interlocking sculptures...

MIRROR - Contemporary - Geometric Abstract w/ Repurposed Construction Material
Located in Signal Mountain, TN
"Mirror" is a site specific installation that was exhibited in the show "Dialects of Place(s) by Land Report Collective at COOP Gallery in Nashville, TN. In this piece, Jobe uses industrial materials such as insulation foam, concrete, window screen, and graphite tracing paper to create a patterned structure that protrudes from the corner and carries the viewer's eye upward. At the bottom of the piece, we see delicately balanced concrete on top of pale blue insulation foam. The patterned concrete and insulation foam carries the viewer's eye upwards towards another pop of blue on top of the aluminum window screen frame. The screen gives the viewer a window in which to look through the piece. On one side, this mesh frames the graphite paper and on the other side the viewer can see the patterned concrete and insulation foam. Review from "The Rib" about "Mirror" One of the more surprising works here is Nashville-based Brian Jobe...

"Mossi Head dress Mas ceremonies Rep Upper Volta, " Wood created c. 1910
Located in Milwaukee, WI
"Mossi Head dress Mas ceremonies Rep Upper Volta" is a wood sculpture that includes various other materials such as fabric, and fibers. An abstracted animal with a hump and a bird on it's back make up the top of the headdress. 27" x 6" x 1" The Mossi states were created about 1500 A.D., when bands of horsemen rode north from what is now northern Ghana into the basin of the Volta River and conquered several less powerful peoples, including Dogon, Lela, Nuna, and Kurumba. These were integrated into a new society call Mossi, with the invaders as chiefs and the conquered as commoners. The Mossi make both political art and spiritual art. Figures are used by the ruling class to validate political power, and masks are used by the conquered peoples to control the forces of nature. The several mask styles reflect the diversity of the population before the 15th century invasion. Long tall masks...
