Carlos Betancourt Sculpture Spray Paint Painting Miami Latin American Modern Art

By Carlos Betancourt

Located in Surfside, FL

Carlos Betancourt, American (Born 1966) Abstract Sculpture Spray Paint and hand Painted Sculptural Wall Applique. Hand signed. Dimensions: 28.75" x 26.5" Three dimensional neo primitive wall relief I believe this is from The Sounds Symbols Project (2000), a monumental ephemeral installation in the sand in Miami Beach. Carlos Betancourt (born San Juan, Puerto Rico 1966) is an American multi-disciplinary artist. His artworks explore issues of memory, and his own experiences, while also dwelling in issues of nature, the environment and matters of beauty, identity and communication. He has worked as a curator, furniture designer and has collaborated in with Louis Vuitton as well as on architectural and site-specific private and public commissions with architect Alberto Latorre. Betancourt artwork is in part inspired by his relationship with nature as well as by the diverse cultures and history of the Caribbean basin, Florida and the Americas. Also by artist Ana Mendieta interventions, Robert Rauschenberg assemblages, Andy Warhol perceptions, Neo Rauch compositions, and a Federico Fellini-esque cast of characters for his photo assemblages. Additionally, he relates to some of theorist Jean Baudrillard views about art and his philosophy on objects; French artist Gustave Courbet's idea that "the only possible source for living art is the artist's own experiences", as well as the Martinican writer and theoretician, Edouard Glissant's belief that ..."the past resides in material objects that only release their hidden meanings when encountered imaginatively and sensuously. Betancourt admires the works of diverse artists such as Fernando Oller, Cisco Jimenez, Bill Viola...

"Mende Mask, " Carved Wooden Mask created in Sierra Leone c. 1930

Located in Milwaukee, WI

This mask was hand-carved by an unknown artist from the Mende tribe in Sierra Leone, Africa. It depicts a face with its eyes downcast, hair in rows, and two birds on the top. 16" x 10" x 10 1/2" The Mende people (also spelled Mendi) are one of the two largest ethnic groups in Sierra Leone. The Mende are mostly farmers and hunters. Much Mandé art is in the form of jewelry and carvings. The masks associated with the fraternal and sorority associations of the Marka and the Mendé are probably the best-known, and finely crafted in the region. The Mandé also produce beautifully woven fabrics which are popular throughout western Africa, and gold and silver necklaces, bracelets, armlets, and earrings. Masks are the collective Mind of Mende community; viewed as one body, they are the Spirit of the Mende people. The Mende mask...

Art Deco Sprinter (Track Runner) Wood Sculpture Canadian Artist

Art Deco Sprinter (Track Runner) Wood Sculpture Canadian Artist

Located in Wilton Manors, FL

Frances Norma Loring (October 14, 1887– February 5, 1968) Track Runner, ca. 1920's. Carved wood with small nail embellishments representing treads on left foot. Original wood stain. Very minor areas of wear evident in detail photos. Signed by artist with initials carved on side of base. Biography Loring was born in Wardner, Idaho, on October 14, 1887 to mining engineer Frank Curtis Loring (1859–1938) and Charlotte Moore. She studied at multiple schools including the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Switzerland, the Academie Colarossi in Paris, the Art Institute of Chicago, the School of the Museum of Fine Arts at Tufts in Boston, and at the Art Students League of New York. At the Art Institute of Chicago Loring met Florence Wyle with whom she was to have a lifelong partnership. In 1909, Loring moved to New York City and was soon joined by Wyle. The first of the three studio homes they would share over their lives was located on MacDougal Alley, a lively artist colony in the heart of Greenwich Village. Living at no. 6, a converted stable with additional living space, they sculpted well-known portrait busts of each other. In 1913, Loring and Wyle moved to Toronto, where they began being referred to as "The Girls." As curators observe, such an appelation is one of "pre-sexual, adolescent identity", suitable to the ultraconservative Toronto of the day. It had overtones of homosexuality. Both of them quickly became major forces in the city and across the country, getting major commissions during World War I and II. In Toronto they rented a studio-home that occupied the top-floor above a carpenters shop at the corner of Church and Lombard Street called Hunters Inn. Eight years later, in 1920, Frances (aged 33) and Florence (aged 39) bought "The Church" at 110 Glenrose Avenue in the Moore Park neighborhood. The Loring-Wyle Parkette, located a block north of "The Church," at the northeast corner of Mount Pleasant Road and St. Clair Avenue East, is now home to their sculpture busts of each other. In 1928, Loring and Wyle were founding members of the Sculptors' Society of Canada with Alfred Laliberté, Elizabeth Wyn Wood, Wood's teacher and husband Emanuel Hahn and Henri Hébert...

Mario Ceroli (Italian, 1938-) Untitled c. 1970 Wood collage on paper Cut wood attached to paper, depicting multiple figures facing each other. Hand signed and numbered to lower right 'Ceroli prova d'artista'. This work is an artist's proof. (not sure of edition) Dimensions: Framed 35.5 x 47.5. sheet 27.25 x 39.5 Provenance: Basel Art Fair, 1976 CDS Gallery, New York (bears label verso) Exhibited: Emilio Cerolli, 1976, Sala Funacion Mendoza, Caracas, Venezuela, An International Scene, 20 September - 20 December 2003, CDS Gallery, New York Mario Ceroli, born 1938 in Castel Frentano, Province of Chieti, Italy Mario Ceroli is an Italian sculptor. His work has been exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City and the Mississippi Museum of Art in Jackson, Mississippi. Ceroli is one of the most influential artists of the Italian post-war period. Ceroli moved to Rome at the age of ten where he later graduated from 'Accademia delle Belle Arti'. At the Art Institute he worked under the guidance of Leoncillo Leonardi, Pericle Fazzini and Ettore Colla, where he experimented with the use of ceramic. In 1958, he first exhibited these works at the Premium Spoleto. In the same year Ceroli held his first solo exhibition at Galleria San Sebastianello of Rome. During 1959 he began to experiment with new materials, particularly with raw wood, such as Russian pinewood. He used these materials to create silhouetted shapes in his furniture and objects that related simplistically to the surrounding space. In the 1960's Ceroli took part in exhibitions related to the "Arte de Povera" group. He had also been involved as screenplay director collaborating with "II Teatro Stabile" in Turin and with "La Scala" In Milan. He was part of the generation of Italian post war artists that included Aligliero Boetti, Lucio Fontana, Alberto Burri, Pino Pascali, Piero Manzoni, Enrico Castellani, Arnaldo Pomodoro, Michelangelo Pistoletto, Mimmo Rotella, Emilio Vedova. One of Ceroli's major works was his 'Mobili nella Valle' series, inspired directly by the Giorgio De Chirico 1927 painting...

By Eric Tardif

Located in Quebec, Quebec

This steam-bent wooden sculpture is made of walnut with a granite base. The wood grain and the color are uniqueness of this sculpture. The wood has magnificent stripe patterns of paler and darker colors. One of them is to stay positive and keep hope. In some cultures, a heron symbolizes contemplation, vigilance, divine wisdom, and inner quietness. As a Chinese symbol, a heron represents strength, purity, patience and long life. In Africa, herons were thought to communicate with the Gods. The elegance and purity of the lines are reminiscent of Native American art from Western Canada. The elegance and purity of the lines are reminiscent of Native American art from Western Canada including that of Benjamin Chee...
