Mogan David 42.0 x 4.0 x 3.0, 17.0 lbs Wood Founder's stamp Artist's Commentary: "The maple lines emanate from the maple border in a purpleheart background and intersect to create the subtle Mogan David (Jewish star). I work with wood like a painter works with oils and a sculptor with stone. From a distance, lines, shapes, contours and shadows are easily seen but when you move from side to side, the change in perspective alters the image like the features of a face when it turns. If a light source moves, shadows in the piece move with it like the sun moving across a landscape. As you approach the piece, shallow contours appear like swells on a lake and intricate patterns emerge. You can't help but touch the smooth flowing surface to feel the highly finished solid wood. The furniture grade modified tung oil allows that. It also makes my art easy to clean if necessary. The lines and shapes in my art are the natural colors of solid wood joined along curves. A veteran home and furniture builder, David turned his interest in design and fabrication from the functional and practical to the imaginative and artistic. Artist Commentary: Anachronic is a piece in a body of work exploring sound and the way that it inhabits space in the built environment. The pattern, repetition, and weaving represent the rhythm, texture, and syncopation of sound. This piece represents an envelope of sound, a finite piece of time, a controlled environment. Milled wood, string and acrylic. Joe Sultan started sculpting later in life after building a home in the Hudson Valley in 2012. He trained, worked as an architect and led his own firms for over 20 years starting in 1980, his focus was special needs housing and other government sponsored commissions.  A second career started in 2001 as owner and CEO of Chilewich, the design brand best known for beautiful and functional home textiles. He built their factory in Georgia where all the products are made, with machines and processes of his design. He stepped down as CEO in May of 2022. During all phases of his career Joe made art, first engraving and drawing before turning to sculpture. But it was at the Hudson Valley house that he turned exclusively to sculpture using the abundant wood of his land. He mills the wood into sticks, planks and blocks. The milling leaves ridges, valleys and cambers making every raw piece, unique. Sculptures start by putting 2 random sticks together, there’s no plan to start with, or drawings. But there’s always an idea about form, space or memory that guides them. The idea solidifies as the piece grows and eventually supersedes initial randomness. All the work contain the markings of its making.  Joe’s work was first shown at Susan Eley Fine Art...
