Damien Hirst Spin Series Skate Deck, Supreme 2009 Medium: Screen print in colors on polychrome wood skateboard deck. Excellent overal condition. Dimensions: 31.1 x 7.68 in (78.99 x 19.51 cm). Stamped signature and Supreme logo on reverse. "Hirst first experimented with spin art in 1992 at his studio in Brixton (‘Beautiful Ray of Sunshine on a Rainy Day Painting and Beautiful Where Did All The Colour Go Painting’ (1992). The following year, he set up a spin art stall with fellow artist Angus Fairhurst at Joshua Compston’s artist led street fair, ‘A Féte Worse than Death’. Made up as clowns by performance artist Leigh Bowery, Fairhurst and Hirst invited visitors to pay £1 to create their own spin paintings to be signed by the pair, (and another £1 to drop their trousers and reveal their painted cocks and bollocks!) The spin paintings are characterised by the works’ elongated titles, which begin with ‘Beautiful’ and end in ‘painting’, and their bright colours. The series began in earnest in 1994, when Hirst had a spin machine made whilst living in Berlin. A series of his machine-made spin drawings were subsequently exhibited at Bruno Brunnet Contemporary Fine Arts, Berlin, later that year. The exhibition ‘making beautiful drawings: an installation’, invited visitors to the gallery to make their own free drawings on a spin drawing machine made from a drill. The first Berlin-made spin painting exhibited was ‘Beautiful, pop, spinning ice creamy, whirling expanding painting’ (1995), at the Waddington Gallery, London, in 1995." Arman Original Bronze Violin Sculpture Edition: HC 1/2 Signed and Numbered Bronze Dimensions: 36 x 50 x 24 cm Arman is a painter who moved from using objects for the ink or paint traces they leave to using them as the painting itself. He is best known for his "accumulations" and destruction/recomposition of objects. In October 1960, Arman, Yves Klein, François Dufrêne, Raymond Hains, Martial Raysse, Daniel Spoerri, Jean Tinguely and Jacques Villeglé, and art critic and philosopher Pierre Restany founded the Nouveau réalisme group. Joined later by Cesar, Mimmo Rotella, Niki de Saint Phalle, and Christo, the group of young artists defined themselves as bearing in common their "new perspective approaches of reality." They were reassessing the concept of art and the artist for a 20th century consumer society by reasserting the humanistic ideals in the face of Industrial Expansion. In 1961, Arman made his debut in the United States, the country which was to become his second home. During this period, he explored creation via destruction. The "Coupes" and the "Colères" featured sliced, burned, or smashed objects arranged on canvas, often using objects with a strong "identity" such as musical instruments (mainly violins and saxophones) or bronze statues. The son of an antiques dealer and amateur cellist, the artist absorbed an intense appreciation for music, the art of collecting and the cultivation of discriminating taste from an early age. After studies at the Ecole Nationale des Arts Décoratifs in Nice, Arman decamped to Paris to study art history at the Ecole du Louvre. His work in these early years focused on abstract paintings inspired by the work of Nicolas de Staël. After taking an art course, he ultimately changed majors and received a Master of Fine Arts degree in sculpture from San Jose State. Postgraduate work followed at San Jose, San Diego State at Long Beach and Palomar College. Oropeza’s contribution to public art in Los Angeles can be seen in a ceramic mosaic covering the 2 story Self Help Graphics Workshop building located at Ceasar Chavez and Gage streets in East Los Angeles. Oropeza donated his time and artistic talent to complete this multi-year project. The second phase of this project was the creation of a Virgin of Guadalupe shrine, shown here, for the community.
