ABSTRACT STYLE

Beginning in the early 20th century, abstract art became a leading style of modernism. Rather than portray the world in a way that represented reality, as had been the dominating style of Western art in the previous centuries, abstract paintings, prints and sculptures are marked by a shift to geometric forms, gestural shapes and experimentation with color to express ideas, subject matter and scenes.

Although abstract art flourished in the early 1900s, propelled by movements like Fauvism and Cubism, it was rooted in the 19th century. In the 1840s, J.M.W. Turner emphasized light and motion for atmospheric paintings in which concrete details were blurred, and Paul Cézanne challenged traditional expectations of perspective in the 1890s.

Some of the earliest abstract artists — Wassily Kandinsky and Hilma af Klint — expanded on these breakthroughs while using vivid colors and forms to channel spiritual concepts. Painter Piet Mondrian, a Dutch pioneer of the art movement, explored geometric abstraction partly owing to his belief in Theosophy, which is grounded in a search for higher spiritual truths and embraces philosophers of the Renaissance period and medieval mystics. Black Square, a daringly simple 1913 work by Russian artist Kazimir Malevich, was a watershed statement on creating art that was free “from the dead weight of the real world,” as he later wrote.

Surrealism in the 1920s, led by artists such as Salvador Dalí, Meret Oppenheim and others, saw painters creating abstract pieces in order to connect to the subconscious. When Abstract Expressionism emerged in New York during the mid-20th century, it similarly centered on the process of creation, in which Helen Frankenthaler’s expressive “soak-stain” technique, Jackson Pollock’s drips of paint, and Mark Rothko’s planes of color were a radical new type of abstraction.

Conceptual art, Pop art, Hard-Edge painting and many other movements offered fresh approaches to abstraction that continued into the 21st century, with major contemporary artists now exploring it, including Anish Kapoor, Mark Bradford, El Anatsui and Julie Mehretu.

Vibrant and dynamic, her abstract compositions emanate energy and warmth, infusing any space with an inviting atmosphere. This 36-inch square original and vibrant painting is wired and ready to hang. The sides of the red, yellow, and black artwork are painted black eliminating the need for framing and creating a cohesive, finished look. The painting is wired and ready to hang, making it a hassle-free addition to any wall. It's signed by the artist on the back, adding an extra touch of authenticity and value. Convenient local Los Angeles area delivery. Affordable Continental U.S. and worldwide shipping. A certificate of authenticity issued by the art gallery is included with the artwork, ensuring that the piece is an authentic work of art from Janette Dye. Born in England in 1962, Janette Dye's artistic journey was shaped by the contrasts and movements of her upbringing in a quaint village near the industrial city of Manchester. Early on, she received guidance from the renowned English painter, Harold Riley, igniting her lifelong passion for art. Later, the works of Riley's mentor, L.S. Lowry, resonated deeply with Dye, reflecting the strained moods of Northern factories and their laborers—a subject intimately connected to her family history. Inspired by Lowry's ability to capture overpowering emotions through strong stylized forms, Dye delved into abstract art, discovering a profound connection between her art and everyday life. In recent years, Dye has had the privilege of collaborating with esteemed artists such as DOWNS, mentored by Karl Benjamin and Frederick Hammersley. Her artworks have graced exhibitions throughout the United States and have found a home in the prestigious Capital One corporate collection. Brave Girl 16

Brave Girl 16

By Angels Grau

Located in New York, NY

Angels Grau is a Catalan artist who spends her time between Barcelona, New York, and a small village located in the breathtaking Priorat, one of the most notorious wine regions in Europe. This combination allows her to have the best of three worlds; it brings together the creativity and passion that her paintings demand. "I invest time in my work. You must look at paintings on different days, with different eyes. There is a need to go back to it again and again.” Born to a family of artists, she grew up surrounded by drawings, tapestries, and paintings that awakened a special sentiment that over time matured into her work. A graphic designer first and painter by evolution, in 2018 she decided to make the leap into becoming a full-time artist. Nothing has deterred her since. After traveling the world and bringing up four children who are almost living their own lives, the artist feels the need to empower the role of women inspired by her own journey. “Invisible Women” is a tribute to each and every woman that fights from anonymous positions, in everyday jobs and everyday lives, to improve their family, their society, their world. Some of her pieces are part of the personal art collections of different CEOs of fortune 100 companies. “Invisible Women” is part of a recent purchase...

By Luigi Spacal

Located in Roma, IT

Composition is an original contemporary artwork realized by Luigi Spacal (Trieste, 1907 - Trieste, 2000) in the 1970s. Original Colored woodcut on cardboard. Good conditions. Image Dimensions: 14 x 12.5 cm Lojze Spacal, also known as Luigi Spacal, was born on the Trieste Karst, at the time of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, from a family of Slovenian nationality. In 1930 he was arrested on charges of anti-fascism and confined for some time to Accettura, in Basilicata. Here he discovered his artistic vocation. In 1934 he graduated in Venice. He began to exhibit his first works in 1937. In 1942 he was again sent to confinement, this time in Abruzzo and, later, assigned to a special working battalion in Forte dei Marmi. Nevertheless, he managed to continue to exhibit his works so much that, in 1944, he set up his first solo show. In 1948 he participated for the first time in the Venice biennial. In 1958 he won the International Grand Prix "for a draftsman and engraver" at the Venice Biennale. In 1959 he received the 2nd prize at the International Biennial of Graphic Art in Ljubljana. In 1974 he was awarded the Prešeren prize, the highest Slovenian artistic recognition, and the “San Giusto d'Oro” in 1977. In 1998 a museum was dedicated to him in the castle of San Daniele...
