Conceptual Art

CONCEPTUAL STYLE

In 1967, artist Sol LeWitt wrote that in “Conceptual art the idea or concept is the most important aspect of the work.” He was giving a name to an art movement that had emerged in the 1960s in which artists were less focused on their medium being something traditionally “artistic” and instead engaged in using any object, movement, form, action or place to express an idea.

LeWitt’s work was featured alongside an assemblage of notes, drawings and outlines by other artists in “Working Drawings and Other Visible Things on Paper Not Necessarily Meant to Be Viewed as Art,” a groundbreaking show at New York City’s School of Visual Arts curated by Mel Bochner, another leading exponent of Conceptualism. Building on radical 20th-century statements, like Fountain (1917) by French artist Marcel Duchamp, Conceptual artists around Europe and North and South America were not interested in the commercial art scene and rather directly challenged its systems and values.

Stretching into the 1970s, this movement has also been called Post-Object art and Dematerialized art. Conceptual art reflected a larger era of social and political upheaval. Pieces associated with the style range from Roelof Louw’s Soul City (Pyramid of Oranges) (1967) — a work of installation art that sees fresh oranges stacked into a pyramid from which visitors are allowed to take one orange away — to On Kawara’s “Today” series, which saw the Japanese artist carefully painting a date in white acrylic on canvases consisting of a single color from 1966 to his death in 2014. Artists such as Ed Ruscha, who created the Twentysix Gasoline Stations book — a collection of photos of gas stations that is widely said to be the first modern artists’ book — made photography a major platform for Conceptual art, as did Bruce Nauman, who burned one of Ruscha's books and then photographed it for his own.

Conceptual art’s legacy of questioning artistic authorship, ownership and how to work with complex ideas of space and time had a significant influence on the decades of culture that followed, and it continues to inform art today.

The collection of Conceptual photography, paintings and sculptures on 1stDibs includes artworks by John Baldessari, Jenny Holzer, Lawrence Weiner, Joseph Kosuth and others.

Best known for his photographs of libraries and reading rooms from around the world—in works such as George Peabody Library II, Baltimore (2017) and Riggs Library I, Washington DC (2017)—Görner captures the atmosphere of absolute silence and concentration the spaces embody while also revealing their almost cathedral-like sense of grandeur. Görner’s images have a vivid sense of depth and dimension that convey an impression of intimacy, as in Isaac Newton, Cambridge (2017), or monumentality via his precise and skilful use of framing and perspective. This stunning photograph captures a vista through the storied volumes, intricately painted walls, and doorways inside the Biblioteca comunale dell'Archiginnasio (Archiginnasio Municipal Library). The Biblioteca Archiginnasio is a public library located inside the Palace of the Archiginnasio in Bologna, Italy. The largest library in Emilia-Romagna, it boasts some 850,000 volumes and pamphlets, 2,500 incunabula, 15,000 16th century editions, 8,500 manuscripts and then letters, collections of autographs, prints and drawings, and 250 archives. The library has also a section of 7,500 magazines. In 1838 a section of the building was destined to preserve the books collected from Napoleon's closure of the religious orders. Fabled patrons include the cardinal Giuseppe Mezzofanti, Giovanni Gozzadini, Marco Minghetti, Giovanni Pascoli, Jacob Moleschott, Luigi Serra, Laura Bassi, Aurelio Saffi, Riccardo Bacchelli, Pelagio Palagi...

I Need Some Love 2
I Need Some Love 2

I Need Some Love 2

Located in Ibadan, Oyo

The focal point of the artwork, the man's free-flowing dreadlocks, serves as a potent symbol of individuality and cultural diversity. In many cultures, dreadlocks have deep-rooted historical and spiritual significance, representing a unique connection to heritage, self-expression, and identity. By emphasizing the man's hair in the portrait, Adetula calls attention to the fact that discrimination often arises from superficial judgments based on appearance, whether it be hairstyles, clothing choices, or language differences. The artwork's title, "I Need Some Love," conveys a heartfelt plea for compassion and understanding. It reminds us that discrimination and prejudice have no place in a harmonious and inclusive society. Adetula's creation urges us to break free from these harmful mindsets and cultivate a culture of empathy and acceptance toward one another. The message of the artwork resonates strongly with the call to let love prevail, irrespective of one's origin or outward appearance. Discrimination, whether conscious or unconscious, hinders our collective progress as a society. It erects barriers between individuals and communities, fostering mistrust and animosity. Adetula's artwork encourages us to dismantle these barriers and build bridges instead. Embracing diversity enriches our lives, broadens our perspectives, and fosters a climate of respect and unity. The man's free-flowing dreadlocks symbolize the beauty of embracing cultural differences and recognizing the uniqueness that each individual brings to the table. Moreover, "I Need Some Love" emphasizes the power of love as a transformative force. The artwork reminds us that by approaching others with love, compassion, and understanding, we can create an environment where everyone feels valued, respected, and heard. Correcting people with love, rather than judgment or hostility, allows us to foster meaningful connections and open up constructive dialogues, thereby nurturing a culture of growth and understanding. The man depicted in the artwork is a poignant reminder that every person deserves happiness and love, irrespective of their appearance, background, or language. Embracing diversity not only enhances our interpersonal relationships but also contributes to the betterment of society as a whole. When we treat one another with kindness and empathy, we foster a sense of belonging and acceptance that empowers individuals to thrive and contribute positively to their communities. In conclusion, "I Need Some Love" by Michael Adetula...

Following on from the hugely successful ‘Vinyl Collection’, Heidler & Heeps have collaborated again, drawing from the childhood past time of stamp collecting. Their unique darkroom process, like an x-ray, reveals the detailed make up of the stamp, which is not possible to see in the physical object. Nearly all take the appearance of a woven tapestry, intricate patterns and artworks from the 19th & 20th Century, are brought to life to be appreciated in the present day. And with the practice of stamp collecting enjoyed by todays older generation when they were children, the exotic imagery takes you to a far off land in a time when overseas travel was limited, the post marks make a physical connection with unknown people around the world. The collection is a documentary of history, dated postmarks connect the images to a time unimaginable and with these artworks you can carry on the British Psyche of ‘collecting’ building your own Heidler & Heeps Stamp Collection...

Reinhard Görner, Ganymed, Palazzo Grimani, Venice

By Reinhard Görner

Located in Los Angeles, CA

Reinhard Görner, Ganymed, Palazzo Grimani, Venice, Italy. In this monumental photograph, a sculpture depicting the Kidnapping of Ganymed is suspended in the center of the vault, decorated by lacunae. The image combines the unique geometric abstraction of the architecture with the organic form of the sculpture and the floor. What is so unique about this artwork? Compositionally, all lines radiate to the the center of the room, where the energy is thrust upwards again by the mythical figure. The wings of Ganymed direct the eye back to the perimeter of the room, where the attention flows inwards once again. The floor radiates with an earthy ktenic energy, which compliments the vertical push of the sculpture. The result is a living, pulsing composition, set within the unusual warm classicism of this unique Venetian Palazzo. This beautiful palace was the residence of the Doge Antonio Grimani. It is one of the most unique examples of Venetian architecture in transition from Gothic, well-rooted in the local culture, to the Renaissance. German large-scale photographer Reinhard Görner is known for his stunning, monumental-scale photography, which combine a sense of grandness with intimacy. He was born in 1950 in Leipzig, Germany, and he lives and works in Berlin, Germany. He studied drama, german literature and sinology in Munich and Berlin, and has been photographing architecture, interiors, and public spaces since 1981. Condition: New. Images are crisp and sharp. Images are not shown at full resolution for the protection of the artist. 50 x 49 inches ed of 10 $6,000 60 x 59 inches ed of 7 $9,000 70 x 68.8 inches ed of 5 $11,000 signed and numbered on label, verso Reinhard Görner with his large format architectural photographs orchestrates the monumentality of rooms. An active architecture photographer since 1985, is a master of perspectives and precise spatial compositions, and he thus considers classical sculpture, in all of its possible facets, a special challenge. "Görner’s photographs sometimes open the doors to another world and take the viewer with them on a journey through time. Here the palace is no longer a museum but both royal residence and a site steeped in history. The viewer does not have to share the halls with the masses of visitors; instead the images offer him exclusive impressions of the Galerie des Glaces (Hall of Mirrors) and the Galerie des Batailles (Hall of Battles) as even the king of France was probably never granted. The halls are empty of people, yet they seem to be able to unfurl their individual characters of their own accord. These places practically breathe history, and this aspect is also part of the essence captured in the photographs. King Wilhelm of Prussia was named German Emperor Wilhelm I in the Hall of Mirrors after France was defeated in 1870–1871 in the Franco-German War. The Treaty of Versailles following World War I was also signed there in 1919. In this sense, the architectural photographs of Versailles’s ceremonial rooms have an edge on Renaissance paintings; here even a sense of world history arises within the viewer – one which continues to exert an influence today".
