Contemporary Art

CONTEMPORARY STYLE

Used to refer to a time rather than an aesthetic, Contemporary art generally describes pieces created after 1970 or being made by living artists anywhere in the world. This immediacy means it encompasses art responding to the present moment through diverse subjects, media and themes. Contemporary painting, sculpture, photography, performance, digital art, video and more frequently includes work that is attempting to reshape current ideas about what art can be, from Felix Gonzalez-Torres’s use of candy to memorialize a lover he lost to AIDS-related complications to Jenny Holzer’s ongoing “Truisms,” a Conceptual series that sees provocative messages printed on billboards, T-shirts, benches and other public places that exist outside of formal exhibitions and the conventional “white cube” of galleries.

Contemporary art has been pushing the boundaries of creative expression for years. Its disruption of the traditional concepts of art are often aiming to engage viewers in complex questions about identity, society and culture. In the latter part of the 20th century, contemporary movements included Land art, in which artists like Robert Smithson and Michael Heizer create large-scale, site-specific sculptures, installations and other works in soil and bodies of water; Sound art, with artists such as Christian Marclay and Susan Philipsz centering art on sonic experiences; and New Media art, in which mass media and digital culture inform the work of artists such as Nam June Paik and Rafaël Rozendaal.

The first decades of the 21st century have seen the growth of Contemporary African art, the revival of figurative painting, the emergence of street art and the rise of NFTs, unique digital artworks that are powered by blockchain technology.

Major Contemporary artists practicing now include Ai Weiwei, Cecily Brown, David Hockney, Yayoi Kusama, Jeff Koons, Takashi Murakami and Kara Walker.

Diamond Heart (20/50) - Figurative Sculpture with Three-Dimensional Blue Heart
Located in Los Angeles, CA
Nayla Saroufim creates glossy balloon sculptures for display on a table or hanging on a wall or ceiling that challenge the traditional notion of the passive viewer. Saroufim's art is a rich mix of media. She was always captivated by the dialogue between painting, illustration, and graphics. Her work embodies her attraction to colors and interest in all forms of expression, especially installations. Her technique is unique and personalized: a fusion of mixed media and installations in layers of steel, copper, paint, and other elements. Saroufim strives to make her positivity and love of happiness appear in her art, sparking emotion and thoughts in viewers. This sculpture measures 12-inches high by 9-inches wide. It sits on a steel base that measures 2 inches deep at its widest point. It is signed and dated underneath the base of the artwork. This sculpture is numbered 20 out of 50. This sculpture can be displayed easily on any flat surface and may be viewed from any vantage point. Free local Los Angeles delivery. Affordable Continental U.S. and International shipping are available. A certificate of authenticity issued by the art gallery is included. Nayla Saroufim was born in Beirut, Lebanon in 1982. She graduated from the Académie Lebanese des Beaux-Arts with a degree in Illustration and Art Direction. While working in the publicity field at several multinational advertising agencies, Saroufim began rekindling her interest in art. Creative, a dreamer, and a lover of color and beauty, Saroufim has been engaging in a creative expression of her personality through art for over a decade. She hopes that by looking at her art, people will realize that there is beauty and happiness in the simplest things. Nayla Saroufim’s work has graced the walls of solo exhibitions including a show in London in December 2015 and one in Beirut in October 2013. Her work has been exhibited at the Beirut Art Fair, in Singapore, and at Asia Contemporary Art. Artspace Warehouse Los Angeles has exhibited her sculptural artworks since 2020. Lighter Blue Coffee, Original Painting
Located in San Francisco, CA

Artist Comments
"This painting was created in one fast sitting, with furious yet thoughtful brushstrokes," explains Rachel. "The acrylic paint ranges from thick impasto a thin watercolor-like veil." Part of Rachel's signature cubist coffee series. For these pieces, she studies her extensive collection of cafetieres that she keeps in her studio. The works are both about celebrating her love of coffee, and depicting light, pattern, and repetition as though it were set to music.

About the Artist
For Rachel Srinivasan, an idea is worth putting on a canvas only if it still feels exciting after a few days. Rachel enjoys mulling the idea over in her mind for some time before creating an artwork. She hopes viewers will engage with her work and wonder about the subject matter, shapes and colors. "My current work is all about creating a connection between the person on the canvas with the viewer," she explains. She prefers large paintings and sometimes even makes her own canvases. She currently lives in Arizona and enjoys baking rhubarb pies, reading, running and going to art museums.

Radishes (Contemporary Still Life Study in Light Box with Diffused Light)
Located in Hudson, NY
11.25 x 11.25 inches unframed Archival pigment print edition of 12 Some of David Halliday's most engaging works are those from his Box Series in which he merges traditional ideas about light and composition with contemporary experiments. In this series an empty cookie tin becomes a tiny studio for food objects. Halliday carefully styles his photographic subjects inside and, allowing only natural light to seep in through a circular window. The results feel less like still lifes and more like intimate portraits of human sustenance. In these photographs, the fleshy curves of a fig, the slick bodies of sardines, even the homeliest porcini mushrooms possess a degree of nobility, providing a refreshing contrast to the compulsive relationship we so often have with food, reminding us to slow down and savor with gratitude. In this particular image, a bunch of radishes with their deep pink skins are are gently brushed with the natural diffused light, echoing techniques associated with a Vermeer painting! About the work: The Past Still Present: A master of light, New Orleans photographer David Halliday produces lush and elegant images that are both classical and modern. Using window...

Fundamentals (Kings Road) - observations at the Schindler House in Los Angeles
Located in San Francisco, CA
In Kings Road (2022) Mona Kuhn lyrically reconsiders the realms of time and space within the architectural elements of the Schindler House in Los Angeles. Built by Austrian architect Rudolph M. Schindler in 1922, the house was both a social and design experiment and an avant-garde hub for intellectuals and artists in the 1920s and ’30s. Fundamentals (2022) Kings Road: A Rudolph Schindler House 45" x 60" / 114cm x 152cm / edition of 3 30" x 40" / 76cm x 102cm /edition of 12 limited edition photograph printed under artist supervision + accompanied by signed artist certificate: artist signature label (8x10") signed/editioned/dated/titled by the artist + stamped for authenticity label is placed centered on verso of the mounted print __________________ About the artist Acclaimed for her contemporary depictions, Kuhn is considered a leading artist in the world of figurative discourse. Throughout a career spanning more than twenty years, the underlying theme of her work is her reflection on humanity’s longing for spiritual connection and solidarity. As she solidified her photographic style, Kuhn created a notable approach to the nude by developing friendships with her subjects, and employing a range of playful visual strategies that use natural light and minimalist settings to evoke a sublime sense of comfort between the human figure and its environment. Her work is natural, restful, and a reinterpretation of the nude in the canon of contemporary art. For the past two decades, the Los-Angeles based artist's works have been shown steadily, revealing an astonishing consistency in technique, of subject and of purpose. In 2001, Kuhn’s photographs were first seen by an influential audience during the exhibition at Charles Cowles Gallery in Chelsea, New York. Kuhn’s distinct aesthetic has propelled her as one of the most collectible contemporary art photographers—her work is in private and public collections worldwide and she is represented by galleries across the United States, Europe and Asia. Kuhn was born in São Paulo, Brazil, in 1969, of German descent. In 1989, Kuhn moved to the US and earned her BA from The Ohio State University, before furthering her studies at the San Francisco Art Institute. She is currently an independent scholar at The Getty Research Institute in Los Angeles. Occasionally, Mona teaches at UCLA and the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena. Kuhn’s first monograph, Photographs, was debuted by Steidl in 2004; followed by Evidence (2007), Native (2010), Bordeaux Series (2011), Private (2014), and She Disappeared into Complete Silence (2018/19). In addition, Stanley/Barker Editions published Kuhn's Bushes & Succulents in 2018. In 2021, Thames & Hudson published a career retrospective titled Works. Kuhn's most recent publication Kings Road (2022) with Steidl accompanies a multi-dimensional museum traveling exhibition shown in Europe and the US. Mona Kuhn’s work is in private and public collections worldwide, including The J. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, The Hammer Museum, Perez Art Museum Miami, Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, and the Kiyosato Museum in Japan. Kuhn's work has been exhibited at The Louvre Museum and Le Bal in Paris; The Whitechapel Gallery and Royal Academy of Arts in London; Musée de l’Elysée in Switzerland; Leopold Museum in Vienna Austria, The Polygon Gallery in Vancouver Canada, Taipei Fine Arts Museum in Taiwan and Australian Centre for Photography...
