By Andy Warhol

Located in NEW YORK, NY

Andy Warhol Bodley Gallery 1957: A rare, 1950s gallery announcement offset illustrated by Andy Warhol on the occasion of: Andy Warhol Golden Pictures: December 2 - December 24, 1957: The Bodley Gallery 223 East 60th St., New York, NY. A scarce, historical Andy Warhol Pre-Pop illustration; highly collectible. Medium: Double-sided offset lithograph in colors, on wove paper, with full margins, before folding. Dimensions: 12 3/4 x 19 1/2 in. (32.4 x 49.5 cm) Good overall vintage condition. Minor signs of aging & handling. Well-preserved. Unsigned from an edition of unknown. Warhol Foundation annotations in pencil on one side. Provenance: The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts, New York. Susan Sheehan Gallery, New York. Private Collection, New York. Literature: Kornbluth: Pre-Pop Warhol, no. 66, pp. 164-165. Further background: Warhol’s career began as a commercial illustrator on New York’s Madison Avenue in 1949, during the massive post-war economic boom. His arrival additionally coincided with an extensive change in the motivations and strategies behind advertising, utilizing applied psychology to influence American consumers to purchase products. This stint as an ad man would further his Pop interest in cultural commercialization and start his artistic career; thus began the first chapter of Warhol’s oeuvre. Several of Andy Warhol's earliest exhibitions in New York were at the Bodley during the 1950s, starting with two in 1956. _ Obsessed with celebrity, consumer culture, and mechanical reproduction, Pop Art king, Andy Warhol created some of the 20th century’s most iconic images. Warhol was widely influenced by popular & consumer culture, with this being evident in some of his most famous works: 32 Campbell's soup cans, Brillo pad box sculptures, and portraits of Marilyn Monroe & Mick Jagger, for example. Rejecting the standard painting and sculpting modes of his era, Warhol embraced silk-screen printmaking to achieve his characteristic hard edges and flat areas of color. The artist mentored Keith Haring and Jean-Michel Basquiat and continues to influence contemporary art around the world: His most bold successors include Richard Prince, Takashi Murakami, and Jeff Koons. Warhol has been the subject of exhibitions at the Whitney Museum of American Art, Museum of Modern Art, Tate Modern, and Centre Pompidou, among other institutions. Bomber and Buckeroos by Till Goodan, Westward Ho Company

Bomber and Buckeroos by Till Goodan, Westward Ho Company

Located in Phoenix, AZ

Bomber And Buckeroos ca. 1939 Till Goodan Offset Lithograph PRINTS ARE IN GOOD CONDITION. PRINTS MAY HAVE SMALL FLAW ALONG EDGE OF PAPER, DOES NOT EFFECT THE PRINT IMAGE All the prints are 26 x 31 inches, Mustang Peeler, Bombers and Buckaroos, The stranger, Guardians of the Range and Range Baby. Note that “The Mustang Runner” is 3 inches shorter in height, 23 x 31 inches The print by Till Goodan was originally a painting and reproduced by the Westward Ho company as a set. Westward Ho produced the most sought after Western dinnerware ever made. The most popular pattern was the Rodeo pattern by Till Goodan. He Illustrated and branded many accessories sold by the Westward Ho Company. Tillman Parker Goodan 1896-1958 To the casual observer his paintings are exciting and colorful. To the scholars of the Western Era they are benchmarks of authenticity. Such is the style of Till Goodan. He was born Tillman Parker Goodan in Eaton, Colorado on March 27, 1896. His father was a true western pioneer, mayor of Eaton, publisher of its first newspaper, and County Commissioner for several years. After moving to California in 1905 and settling on a little farm that bordered the Michel Cattle Ranch, Till spent much of his boyhood with the Michel sons working on their ranch. There he developed his expertise as a calf roper and the skills of a working cowboy. As a young man Till pursued endeavors that would initially callous his emerging artistic hands. He worked for the famous Miller and Lux Ranch in California. He packed mules and ran pack trains into the Sierra Mountains. He broke horses and competed in local rodeos riding saddle broncs and roping calves. And during the quiet hours he would draw pictures of ranch life and the action of the rodeo. People began commenting on his talents as an artist. In 1917 he left the rodeo circuit and turned his full attention to a career in art. He studied with Roger Sterrett, William Paxton, and Dana Bartlett, all highly respected California artists. Till soon became a free-lance commercial artist doing work for Grauman’s Chinese and Lowe’s Theaters, Helms Bakery and Security Bank. He later assumed a position as Art Director for the Richfield Oil Company. However, his first love was still the art of the old west, horses, cowboys, and ranching. So, he left Richfield and gave his full attention to the field of fine arts. He did oil painting, water colors and lithographs. He drew the Gene Autry Comic Books. He illustrated and hand lettered a large collection of stories about famous bucking horses, ranches, horsemen of the world, and western gear. In association with W.C. Wentz, he started producing a complete line of western gift wares, ceramics, bronzes, leather, paper, and fabric. By the 1930′s he was beginning to receive recognition for his western art and by the early 1940s, he and his daughter, Betty, were illustrating comic books for his longtime friend, Gene Autry. Betty was also a world champion cowgirl. Till Goodan designs appeared in virtually every medium. But, the most famous was the four lines of dinnerware produced by Wallace China...

Red Hardbody

Red Hardbody

By Trevor Young

Located in Fairfield, CT

Represented by George Billis Gallery, NYC & LA --Trevor Young is a quintessentially American painter. He makes no bones about his affection for the trappings of car culture, life on the road, and 1960s West Coast art. His main subject is modernism’s footprint on the outposts of Americana—places typified by harsh artificial light and hard shadows on concrete. The show makes clear that for Young, despite the contemporary art world’s preferences for irony, disjunction, and tongue-in-cheek intellectual gamesmanship, painting is at its best when it attempts to offer an unpretentious accounting of where and how we live our day-to-day lives. The celebrations of urban sprawl offered by artists like Ed Ruscha—who famously took no-nonsense aerial photographs of thirty four LA parking lots in 1967, and created sleek, stripped down paintings of Standard Oil stations—are an obvious point of reference in Young’s work. But Young’s choices seem more personal than Ruscha’s, and his technique is certainly more painterly: His images of gas stations are uneasy amalgamations, cobbled together from his own memories of road trips, photographs, and pure invention, and rendered with a sense of atmosphere and drama seemingly at odds with his use of hard lines and simple geometric shapes. Painters today tend to lean on pastiche, on art-historical mashups and code-switching. This typically results in images with no unified style and no concern for pictorial space, illusionistic or otherwise. For many contemporary painters, the picture plane is simply a flat, delimited arena in which different types of visual syntax collide, floating freely. This is a non-strategy in which artists make an end run around some of the thornier problems of composition, perception, and cognition. Young bucks this trend. He activates every square inch of his canvases, blocking in large passages of negative space with skeins of scruffy countervailing strokes. He is not a fussy painter, nor is he out to prove his own mastery to an audience. Like Edward Hopper, Young tends to eschew a lot of paint’s seductive properties, preferring to create hard edges and large, gently undulating planes of subdued color. He draws the viewer into an unpopulated, uncluttered world with a clear horizon line—but one that is also filled with hiccups, discontinuities, and compromises. In Service in the Rear, for example, a shelter for gas pumps in the foreground—closest to the viewer and, therefore, logically a dominant compositional element—is rendered as a hazy silhouette that flagrantly disobeys the rules of linear perspective. This is intentional: The structure is only important to Young in the way that it draws the viewer’s eye below and past it, to the glowing, low-slung building dominating the lefthand side of the picture. Thus Young shows his talent for creating visual tension and drama—and for sidestepping the viewer’s expectations. Young understands that some might regard his brand of painting as obsolete. He also understands the troubled legacy of modernism, and what the triumph of universal technology has meant for cultures around the globe. Still, for Young, the cold comfort offered by outposts of convenience—gas stations, airports, cheap hotel rooms—is not so easily dismissed. Young shares the strange buoyant optimism of his hero, Jonathan Richman, who, in his early ‘70s proto-punk single, Roadrunner, exults in the simple act of driving past the Stop’n’Shop with the radio on...

Australia — UTA French Airlines Travel Poster, Circa 1975-1982
Australia — UTA French Airlines Travel Poster, Circa 1975-1982

Australia — UTA French Airlines Travel Poster, Circa 1975-1982

Located in Spokane, WA

This striking travel poster promoting Australia was issued by UTA (Union de Transports Aériens), the French international airline active under that name from 1963 until its merger into Air France in 1990. The composition presents a highly stylized rendering of Sydney Harbour, with the Harbour Bridge and the unmistakable silhouette of the Sydney Opera House set against a vivid green ground and simplified skyline. The design embraces a minimalist, graphic approach characteristic of later 20th-century airline advertising, favoring bold color fields and reduced forms over photographic realism. The strong contrast and simplified geometry give the image immediate visual impact, while the iconic landmarks firmly anchor the scene in Sydney, Australia’s most internationally recognized city. UTA was known for commissioning clean, modern promotional imagery to position long-haul destinations as both aspirational and accessible. This poster fits squarely within that tradition, likely produced in the 1970s or 1980s, when such reductive graphic styles were widely used in airline marketing. Today, the piece appeals to collectors of airline memorabilia, Australian travel posters...
