Signed, titled, dated, and print date by Mario Algaze Mario Algaze is a contemporary Cuban-American photographer whose work articulates the counter-culture of Latin America, the Caribbean and Cuba. In 1960, at only thirteen years old, Algaze was exiled from Cuba. He relocated to America and settled in Miami, Florida. Miami offered a rich cultural mecca that encouraged Algaze to travel throughout Central and South America. These trips allowed him a glimpse of belonging within a familiar culture. In finding his identity after exile, he began photographing Latin America in the 1970’s while reconnecting with the feeling of home. His photographs embody the everyday of Latin life. Between his travels in the late 70’s, Algaze studied visual art at Miami Dade College. Algaze’s masterful command of light illuminates his street scenes that detail the struggles and victories of Latin culture. The vision Algaze has made him an award-winning photographer and in 1985 was the recipient of the Individual Florida Artist Fellowship and in 1989, received the Cintas Foundation Fellowship in Visual Arts. After a long, successful career with the Eastman Kodak Company as a photojournalist and editorial photographer, Emile Dillon returned to painting in 1998. As a photographer he traveled the United States, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Europe. While he’d chosen the camera for his profession, he’d grown up with oil on canvas. His grandfather was the Harlem Renaissance painter Frank Joseph Dillon and a favorite uncle was the Latin American artist Felix Vargas. Dillon’s years behind the camera and days in Soho galleries inspired him to pursue Photorealism as a style. But instead of the landscape of the exotic which he’d experienced in his Kodak travels, he was fascinated by the humble diners, motels, and vintage signs which were vanishing from American towns and cities. To perfect his craft, he studied at the School of Visual Arts and the Art Students League in New York. Guillaume Lachapelle's artistic practice is shaped predominantly by sculpture, expressed in the form of installations and detailed miniature models. Lachapelle presents playful universes which combine objects of undetermined purpose; in this way, he opens the conventions of our reality to fresh disposition. The architecture of his models - which Lachapelle has recently begun to make with the help of the latest 3-D printing technology - shows motifs originating from the everyday, certainly, but seeming strange, alienating or even uncanny when combined as the artist chooses. A kind of transition between two worlds often appears in Lachapelle's work - for example when the model of a library filled with books curves inwards and reveals a mysterious opening pointing into darkness - these are the artist's references to spaces and occurrences which may be concealed below the surface of outward semblance.
