Finding the Right Seating for You

With entire areas of our homes reserved for “sitting rooms,” the value of quality antique and vintage seating cannot be overstated.

Fortunately, the design of side chairs, armchairs and other lounge furniture — since what were, quite literally, the early perches of our ancestors — has evolved considerably.

Among the earliest standard seating furniture were stools. Egyptian stools, for example, designed for one person with no seat back, were x-shaped and typically folded to be tucked away. These rudimentary chairs informed the design of Greek and Roman stools, all of which were a long way from Sori Yanagi's Butterfly stool or Alvar Aalto's Stool 60. In the 18th century and earlier, seats with backs and armrests were largely reserved for high nobility.

The seating of today is more inclusive but the style and placement of chairs can still make a statement. Antique desk chairs and armchairs designed in the style of Louis XV, which eventually included painted furniture and were often made of rare woods, feature prominently curved legs as well as Chinese themes and varied ornaments. Much like the thrones of fairy tales and the regency, elegant lounges crafted in the Louis XV style convey wealth and prestige. In the kitchen, the dining chair placed at the head of the table is typically reserved for the head of the household or a revered guest.

Of course, with luxurious vintage or antique furnishings, every chair can seem like the best seat in the house. Whether your preference is stretching out on a plush sofa, such as the Serpentine, designed by Vladimir Kagan, or cozying up in a vintage wingback chair, there is likely to be a comfy classic or contemporary gem for you on 1stDibs.

With respect to the latest obsessions in design, cane seating has been cropping up everywhere, from sleek armchairs to lounge chairs, while bouclé fabric, a staple of modern furniture design, can be seen in mid-century modern, Scandinavian modern and Hollywood Regency furniture styles.

Admirers of the sophisticated craftsmanship and dark woods frequently associated with mid-century modern seating can find timeless furnishings in our expansive collection of lounge chairs, dining chairs and other items — whether they’re vintage editions or alluring official reproductions of iconic designs from the likes of Hans Wegner or from Charles and Ray Eames. Shop our inventory of Egg chairs, designed in 1958 by Arne Jacobsen, the Florence Knoll lounge chair and more.

No matter your style, the collection of unique chairs, sofas and other seating on 1stDibs is surely worthy of a standing ovation.

Questions About The Red Chair
  • 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022
The Red Blue chair, designed by Gerrit Rietveld, was partially inspired by the chair designs of architect and designer Frank Lloyd Wright. It was also created in the hopes of designing a piece that would be simple to mass produce. Find a collection of Red Blue Chairs on 1stDibs.

Red Valentino is also the name of a diffusion line produced by the luxury fashion house of Valentino. The focus of the label is on contemporary, accessibly priced clothing and accessories. Red bottom means a high-heel shoe produced by the French luxury fashion house of Christian Louboutin. The name refers to the bright red color of the soles of Louboutin's iconic pumps. The maison's founder, Christian Louboutin, became inspired to create his now-famous red sole after seeing his assistant paint her nails bright red. He tried applying the polish to a sole and was enamored with the results. Soon, his glossy, red-bottomed heels were all the rage in the fashion world. Find a collection of Christian Louboutin shoes on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2024
Louboutins have red soles due to the brand's founder, Christian Louboutin. The now-revered red sole emerged with his third collection when Louboutin noticed an assistant painting her nails bright red. He tried applying the polish to a sole and was enamored with the results. Soon, his glossy, red-bottomed heels were all the rage in the fashion world.

Louboutin's interest in the color red can be traced back to his youth. Growing up in the Paris neighborhood of the Musée national des Arts d'Afrique et d'Océanie, he regularly spent weekends there and became fascinated by a sign asking women not to wear heels on account of the antique wooden floors. The severe arch of the heel on the sign and the violent red slash through it inspired him to think about shoes as something that could be dangerous and powerful in their allure.

On 1stDibs, shop a diverse assortment of Christian Louboutin shoes.
  • 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022
What the red scarf represents depends on the context. Most often, people associate red scarves with communism because young people who supported the economic system in Russia, China, Cuba, Hungary and other countries frequently sported them. In addition, some people wear red scarves on February 4th in honor of National Wear Red Day , which seeks to raise awareness about heart disease. On 1stDibs, shop a wide variety of vintage and designer scarves.

  • 1stDibs ExpertMay 5, 2023
Ruby red glass is a type of glass with a vibrant red color that comes from gold chloride. Ancient glassmakers once used the technique, which was then lost for centuries. In 1676, Andreas Cassius rediscovered the process, but it wasn’t until the end of the 19th century that glassworks began manufacturing ruby red glass in large quantities. Shop a selection of ruby red glassware on 1stDibs.

The difference between Valentino and Red Valentino is price and style. Valentino is the name of the flagship label produced by the House of Valentino, which designer Valentino Garavani founded in 1960. Launched in 2003 by designers Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pierpaolo Piccioli, Red Valentino is a diffusion line that offers more youthful, economically priced clothing and accessories. Yes, real Red Bottoms do scuff. The signature red soles on Christian Louboutin heels are genuine leather. With regular wear, the leather does become scuffed, and the red color will gradually wear away. How quickly this occurs depends on how often you wear your heels. On 1stDibs, shop a collection of Christian Louboutin shoes.

No, not all Chanel bags are red inside. While red lining has become an iconic feature of many Chanel bags, it isn't universal. There are several different methods available to test if your red coral is authentic. Red coral beads should be smooth to the touch, not rough, even when examined up close. Another easy test is to drop them in a glass of milk and see if the milk changes to a red color. If the milk turns red, then your red coral is the real deal. Since imitation red coral is often made of glass, you can also give it a tap and see if it feels like glass. On 1stDibs, you’ll find a collection of expertly-vetted red coral jewelry from some of the world’s top sellers.

To identify if the red coral is real, put your stone in a glass of milk. If the milk changes color, your stone is a real one. Additionally, you can view it through a magnifying glass. If you observe a texture, your red coral is genuine — a fake one will generally be smooth with no texture. Find red coral jewelry on 1stDibs.
