Finding the Right Watches for You

Records show that, in Europe, by the 16th century, it was high time for portable clock devices. Right now, perhaps you’re shopping for your own. If so, find a vast range of fashionable and functional antique, vintage and luxury watches on 1stDibs.

While wall-mounted time tellers and grandfather clocks were much more convenient than the sundials of ancient history, watches were becoming crucial for an increasingly connected society whose members learned that the latest advancements in technology meant they could carry devices that kept time to within a minute a day. Tragically, the first pocket watches — albeit an improvement on the accessories that preceded them, which dangled from a chain worn around the neck — didn’t help much as far as accuracy or portability. Focused on style over substance, the upper class frequently carried lavish pieces that ran hours behind.

Eventually, watches migrated from owners’ pockets to their wrists. In the early days of watchmaking, watches were fragile enough that they necessitated protection from the elements. Now, wristwatches made of gold and steel can withstand the harshest climates — even 100 meters underwater, in the case of Rolex’s Submariner. Designer Gérald Genta, whose range of clients included Rolex, created for Audemars Piguet the first luxury sports timepiece to be made from stainless steel. First introduced in 1972, the Royal Oak was a perfect choice for blending the form and function that are now synonymous with sports watches.

Indeed, although exceedingly practical, the watches of today are far from bland. Bulgari’s iconic Serpenti watch was on everyone’s list after the collection’s bold bracelet, which technically debuted after the timepiece, graced the wrist of actress Elizabeth Taylor. If anything, elaborately crafted timepieces — the unmistakably boxy silhouette of Cartier Tank watches, the elegant and minimal Calatrava designed by legendary Swiss house Patek Philippe — are even more effective than the shape we associate with traditional watches. You’ll always know what time it is because you won’t be able to tear your eyes away from your new accessory.

Form watches — the all-encompassing moniker bestowed upon non-round watches — are making headlines and completing contemporary fashionable ensembles the world over. At the same time, both casual fans and careful collectors are drawn to the unbeatable charm of vintage styles, such as the icons designed by Omega that even James Bond can’t resist

When shopping for a watch, it’s good to keep your needs as well as your specific personal style in mind: A smaller, subtle timepiece is a good fit for small wrists. When will you be wearing your new accessory? There’s a versatile model out there for everyday wear, while a rugged, feature-heavy watch is a safe bet if you’re prone to embarking on all-weather activities in the great outdoors.

Find exactly what you’re looking for in an unparalleled collection of antique, vintage and luxury watches on 1stDibs that includes Cartier watches, Rolex watches, Patek Philippe watches and more — we promise it will be worth your time.

  • 1stDibs ExpertNovember 22, 2024
No, Genève is not a watch brand. However, there is a watchmaker called ID Genève, and you may see the word "Genève" on the dials of luxury watchmakers. Geneva, or Genève, is the name of the Swiss city known for producing some of the most impressive timepieces in the world. Although “Swiss” and “Swiss Made” have been registered as trademarks in the United States and Hong Kong by the Federation of the Swiss Watch Industry, no similar measures have been taken to stop manufacturers worldwide from associating their goods with Geneva and its centuries-old reputation for fine watchmaking. Among luxury timepieces, however, there is a definitive certification for Geneva watches. The mark to look for is the Poinçon de Genève, referred to in English as the Hallmark of Geneva or the Geneva Seal. It is reserved for mechanical watches made in the city or within its canton (a region similar to a U.S. state) that adhere to superb traditional standards of craftsmanship. Some people may refer to watches that bear this mark as Genève watches. Find a large selection of watches on 1stDibs.

A fusee pocket watch — named for the French word fusée — is an antique type of watch with a crescent pulley and a curved groove around it that is wound with a cord or chain. The chain is attached to the mainspring barrel. Find a range of vintage fusee pocket watches on 1stDibs today.
  • 1stDibs ExpertNovember 2, 2021
The best pocket watch is a matter of preference. The earliest pocket watches were luxury items, and, owing to cost, they weren’t commonplace until the 19th century. Artfully crafted pocket watches were a symbol of wealth. Brands like Patek Philippe, Vacheron Constantin, and Audemars Piguet are internationally renowned makers of pocket watches. On 1stDibs, find a variety of antique and vintage pocket watches.
  • 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022
A pocket watch fob refers to the chain or ribbon to which a pocket watch is attached. Its purpose was to make the watch more readily accessible to the wearer. You’ll find a variety of pocket watch fobs from some of the world’s top sellers on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022
How you store pocket watches is largely a matter of personal preference. Generally, you should keep them in a storage container designed specifically for stowing delicate items, such as a velvet-lined jewelry box, a watch box or on a watch stand. Shop a variety of antique and vintage pocket watches on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertMarch 22, 2022
The way to speed up your pocket watch depends on the specific model of timepiece that you have. To avoid damage, take it to a watch repair shop with experience repairing pocket watches to make adjustments. You'll find a selection of pocket watches on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertAugust 17, 2021
A hunter pocket watch is a pocket watch with a metal case that has a spring hinged lid to cover the watch face and protect it from damage.
  • 1stDibs ExpertNovember 22, 2024
The most highly sought-after pocket watch will vary over time as trends in collecting do come and go. However, some pocket watches remain consistently popular among collectors. These timepieces include dress watches, such as those crafted by Elgin, Audemars Piguet and Patek Phillippe; railroad pocket watches produced by makers like Illinois and Hamilton; and military timepieces manufactured by Rolex and Omega. On 1stDibs, find a wide range of pocket watches.
  • 1stDibs ExpertFebruary 22, 2021
Corum is a well-known luxury brand that manufactures exceptionally well-made watches. On average, a Corum watch costs between $4,000 and $5,000. Some are as much as $45,000.
  • 1stDibs ExpertNovember 22, 2024
Yes, Longines is a luxury watch brand. The maker is known for creating some of the most technically innovative and attractive timepieces in the world. Once worn by Humphrey Bogart, Albert Einstein, Richard Byrd and Charles Lindbergh, the company's vintage watches are now sought after by collectors and anyone desiring to wear a high-grade wristwatch. Shop a collection of Longines watches on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertNovember 22, 2024
How much the GP watch brand costs varies. Factors that affect the price include materials, movement type, model type and whether or not a timepiece is a part of a limited edition line. Generally, Girard-Perregaux watches sell for between $4,000 and $55,000 when purchased from authorized dealers. Sometimes, you can find pre-owned Girard-Perregaux timepieces at lower prices on trusted online platforms. On 1stDibs, shop a collection of Girard-Perregaux watches.
  • 1stDibs ExpertNovember 22, 2024
The oldest American watch brand that is still in operation is Waltham. When he founded the company in 1850, Aaron Lufkin Dennison revolutionized the industry by introducing the concept of replaceable watch components. This innovation allowed wristwatches and pocket watches to be produced in a fraction of the time it traditionally took to handcraft a watch with unique components. Find a selection of Waltham watches on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertNovember 26, 2024
Many watch lovers believe that Garrard is a good watch brand. The first official Crown Jeweler for the British royal family, Garrard & Co. Limited has crafted iconic and historically celebrated watches, as well as rings, necklaces and other jewelry, for centuries. Garrard is now committed to ethical sourcing and sustainable practices. Today, its all-female design team — led by creative director Sara Prentice — continues to merge ageless techniques with modern technology to uphold the firm's legacy. Find a wide variety of watches on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertDecember 5, 2024
Yes, EBEL is a luxury watch brand. Since 1911, the company has produced finely crafted timepieces at its atelier in La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland. The brand is perhaps best known for its distinctive bracelet band featuring unique wavy links. On 1stDibs, find a selection of EBEL watches.
  • 1stDibs ExpertDecember 5, 2024
Which Chinese watch brand is best is largely subjective. However, several widely respected luxury and fashion watchmakers are based in China. Among them are Atelier Wen, Behrens, Celadon, CIGA Design, Fiyta, Kairos, Lin Yong Hua, Logan Kuan Rao, Longio, Memorigin, Qin Gan, Raven Watches, Seagull, Shenzhen Luminox, Sichuan Watch and Tan Zehua. No, Longines is not the oldest watch brand. However, the company does have a long history that dates back to its founding in 1832. The oldest luxury watch brand is actually Vacheron Constantin, which Jean-Marc Vacheron founded in 1755. On 1stDibs, explore a collection of Longines and Vacheron Constantin watches.
  • 1stDibs ExpertDecember 17, 2024
Yes, Michele watch is a luxury brand. Known for its Art Deco-influenced style, the brand was started in 1995 and soon got widespread attention for its fashion-forward timepieces, with Michele being acquired in 2004 by the Fossil Group. Michele fits the definition of luxury because it produces well-designed watches out of fine materials, such as 18-karat gold, and sells them at aspirational price points. However, Michele watches are often less expensive than those produced by some competitors, so some people consider the brand to be entry-level luxury. On 1stDibs, find a variety of Michele watches.
