Like his near contemporary Joseph Wright (1734-1797), Abraham Pether was one of the finest early English landscape painters of chiaroscuro; the bold contrasting of light and shade used to convey drama and three-dimensional depth in a painting.
Between 1773 and 1811 Abraham Pether exhibited at 61 paintings at the Royal Academy, 39 at the Free Society, 24 at the Society of Artists, and at the British Institution in London.to

Once something has caught my eye and I’ve heard the “perfect” click, it’s like a photograph has been taken in my mind’s eye. I only have a few days of clarity with that image. I have to start the painting quickly or else it will be gone and I will lose that image forever.”
