Christ Samaritan Paint Oil on canvas Oil on canvas Flemish Painter 17th Century
Located in Riva del Garda, IT
Flemish painter of the 17th century Christ and the Samaritan woman at the well Oil painting on canvas cm. 76 x 104 - In frame cm. 93 x 121 The work is ascribed to a Flemish painter, active in the seventeenth century, and illustrates the episode, taken from the Gospel of John (Jn 4, 1-30), of the dialogue between Christ and a Samaritan woman at Jacob's well, near of the city of Sicar, from which the woman has just drawn water and then placed it in a jug. The theme (one of the most frequently used in Counter-Reformation Christian art) celebrated the main concepts of the Council of Trent: the encounter with the Samaritan woman has the symbolic meaning of the innovation brought by Christ who offers the good news even to those who are not considered pure Jew. Even the place of the event, rather unusual and certainly not religious, according to biblical tradition, was rich in meanings and historical salvific evocations. The Gospel episode is reflected in our canvas with an interesting translation both in terms of composition and pictorial quality, finding its culmination in the graceful figure of the Samaritan woman, with her elegant pose, underlined by the skilful drapery of her clothes and her gestures. . The author broadens the horizon of the scene, showing the glimpse of the city of Sicar, illuminated by the light of the dawn of a new day, and from which the disciples of Christ are returning - in the Gospel account John, Peter and Andrew are named - followed by others and by the inhabitants curious to see the new Messiah in person. The conservation conditions of the work appear very good. The painting is sold together with a nice frame. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: The work is sold with a certificate of authenticity and a descriptive iconographic card. We take care and organize the transport of the purchased works, both for Italy and abroad, through professional and insured carriers. It is also possible to see the painting in the Riva del Garda...

Alexander The Great Le Brun Paint Oil on canvas 17th Century Old master France
Located in Riva del Garda, IT
Antichità Castelbarco SRLS is proud to present: Charles le Brun (Paris 1619 - 1690) Circle of Alexander the Great seated on throne gives audience to satraps of the empire Oil on canvas (90 x 142 cm. - In frame 114 x 168 cm.) The composition depicts Alexander the Great, seated triumphant on his throne and aware of his own glory as he raises his sceptre high in the air as a sign of power, while giving an audience to the Persian governors of the conquered provinces, dressed in traditional ceremonial robes. With the conquest of the Persian empire and the consequent subjugation of Darius III, Alexander had now marked his rise to ruler of the ancient world, and it became necessary to establish a court administration in which his state could be manifested and by which he could bring the authority of his sovereignty to his empire. We see here Alexander, by now considered the King of Kings, receiving the Persian satraps of the provinces of the kingdom (the satrapies) in audience in his royal tent, displaying all the typical symbols of his power: the throne, the classical crown (tiara), the shirt, the red royal cloak...

Holy Family Poussin Paint Oil on canvas Old master 17th Century Religious Art
Located in Riva del Garda, IT
Nicolas Poussin (Les Andelys 1594 - Rome 1665), Circle of Holy Family with Saint Elizabeth and Saint John the Baptist in a landscape Oil painting on canvas 56 x 68 cm. in frame 72 x 85 cm. We present this splendid work that depicts the episode, taken from the Old Testament, of the meeting of the Holy Family with Saint Elizabeth and the little Saint John. Saint Joseph, in the background, is between Saint Elizabeth, sitting on the ground, and the Madonna. The two hold their respective children on their knees, San Giovannino and Jesus playing with a scroll from which you can glimpse the inscription "Ecce Agnus Dei", evoking the words with which John the Baptist, as an adult, will address Christ, recognizing in him the awaited Messiah, the savior of men. The setting is simple but eloquent, intrinsic with solemnity but softened by the strong sentimental understanding between the characters, underlined by their crossed gazes full of great humanity. The arrangement of the figures also emphasizes their intimate relationship, with the Madonna supporting the Child Jesus balanced by the presence of the other characters, arranged concentrically to enhance the importance of each. There is a strong search for delicate formal correspondences, in the rhythm of the stroke and curves, as well as the psychological ones; in fact, looks and gestures are wisely intertwined, in a highly studied complex but with an extremely simple and natural effect, with a serene and calm tone. Also of great effect is the attention paid to the landscape in the background, in which views of the city and various landscape views appear, rich in detail, with hills, perched villages and architectural ruins, which evoke the area surrounding Rome. The work takes up a composition conceived, during his long stay in Rome, by Nicolas Poussin (Les Andelys 1594 - Rome 1665) *, and is an excellent example of how the author was able to amalgamate and merge the ideal of French...

Christ Crucified Sagrestani Paint Oil on canvas Old master 17/18th Century Italy
Located in Riva del Garda, IT
The Crucifixion of Christ with the Virgin, Mary Magdalene and St. John the Evangelist, attributable to Giovanni Camillo Sagrestani (Florence, 1660 - 1731) Technique/dimensions: oil on canvas (106 x 79 - in frame 118 x 90 cm.) This work, of excellent quality, depicting the intense scene of the Crucifixion of Christ, is set in a nocturnal atmosphere dense with pathos but refined, with a dark background irradiated by a few glimpses of sunset light. The composition is articulated according to a canonical compositional scheme, with the dying Jesus seated on the cross, while at his bedside are the three key figures of the epilogue of his earthly life in an attitude of prayer, namely his Mother, Mary Magdalene and St. John the Evangelist. The Virgin, standing on the left, prays with folded hands, while Mary Magdalene, beautiful, is at the foot of the cross, kneeling with the ampoule of perfumed ointments; finally, the Apostle John, gazes at the Lord and prays for him. The luminosity, which envelops the characters in a skilful chiaroscuro, as well as the use of intense colour, capable of constructing a scene full of energy, are elements of clear Venetian ancestry. The setting is traversed by an intense glow, dominated by an evocative sunset sky, which irradiates the characters, emphasising a particularly vivid colour range. Observing the work and entering into its attributive collocation, the particular features link its origin to the most felicitous production of the late Tuscan Baroque; in particular, the stylistic and pictorial traits allow us to liken it to the hand of Giovanni Camillo Sagrestani (1660-1731), one of the most intriguing and charismatic artistic figures in the Tuscan artistic pantheon of the 17th century. The style shows the painter's peculiar effects of light and Venetian chromaticism, influenced by the examples of Luca Giordano, Giuseppe Maria Crespi...

Study of a beggar and his dog
Located in Stoke, Hampshire
Circle of Cornelis Pietersz Bega (1631/32-1664) The Beggar Oil on copper, Octagonal Painting Size 11 x 11 in Framed Size 15 x 15 in Cornelis Pietersz Bega was born in either 1631 or 1632 in Haarlem. His grandfather was the renowned history painter Cornelis Cornelisz van Haarlem (Dutch, 1562 - 1638), and his extended family included many other more minor painters, sculptors, and craftsmen. In the spring of 1653 he traveled with the portraitist and still life painter Vincent Laurensz van der Vinne (1628–1702) through Germany, visiting Frankfurt am Main, Heidelberg, Strasbourg, and Basel. Although, like Van der Vinne, he may have intended to continue on to Rome, Bega instead returned to Haarlem in June of that year. He joined the Guild of Saint Luke in 1654. Bega died unmarried in 1664 at the young age of 32, likely a victim of the plague that claimed many lives in Haarlem that year. Dutch artist biographer Arnold Houbraken wrote that Bega was the “first and best pupil” of Adriaen van Ostade (Dutch, 1610 - 1685), a painter of low-life genre scenes. Bega similarly specialized in paintings of jovial taverngoers, smokers, quack doctors, alchemists, and musicians, but he also created tender and sympathetic images of peasant families and nursing mothers. Like Ostade, he also produced etchings, and he may have been one of the first Dutch artists to experiment with monotypes. Bega was also a confident draughtsman, and made numerous chalk drawings remarkable for their sculptural quality. Houbraken wrote that Bega and his close friend Leendert van der Cooghen (1632–1681) frequently drew from life together. Early in his career, Bega painted in a loose, rough style similar to Ostade, although his paintings differ from Ostade’s in that they exhibit a greater degree of monumentality and occasionally include classical elements and figures derived from live models. Bega may have been influenced by the classicizing tradition in Haarlem painting, which he would have known both from the extensive art collection he inherited from his grandfather, as well as from contemporary Haarlem painters who had trained there, such as Salomon (1597–1664) and Jan de Bray...

By Gaspar van den Hoecke (Antwerp, 1585 - 1648)
Located in Riva del Garda, IT
Gaspar van den Hoecke (Antwerp, 1585 - 1648) Herod's banquet Early 17th century oil on panel, with gold highlights (in the guise of Salome and in the curtains of the building in the background) 56 x 80 cm. framed 72 x 90 cm. Note: The painting probably dates from an original by Frans II Francken (1581 - 1642), which is shown under the number 0000344789 in the RKD. Valuable oil painting on panel depicting King Herod and the beautiful Jewish princess Salome according to the episode taken from the Gospel of Matthew (14.3-11), which sees her as the protagonist in the story of the martyrdom of John the Baptist. The event shown is a cross between history and legend, a myth faced for centuries by artists in every field: Caravaggio in painting, Oscar Wilde in theater, Richard Strauss...

Landscape Nativity Religious Paint Oil on canvas Old master 17th Century Italian
By Scipione Compagni, or Compagno (Naples, about 1624 - after 1680)
Located in Riva del Garda, IT
Scipione Compagni, or Compagno (Naples, about 1624 - after 1680) Fantastic landscape with the Nativity of Christ and the appearance of the angel to the shepherds Oil painting on canvas cm. 47 x 62 with antique frame cm. 63 x 78 cm. We present with great pleasure this rich representation, executed in the second half of the seventeenth century, whose stylistic and composition features reflect the stylistic features of the Neapolitan lesson: the warm colors, the lively chromatic range, the quick but precise brushstrokes are elements that lead us, in particular, to the hand of Scipione Compagno. It fits fully into the classic production of the Neapolitan painter, characterized by compositions filled with numerous figures, assembled with great formal elegance, where the painter re-elaborates the mannerist suggestions but in a theatrical key and consequently reaches an extremely refined Baroque vision of the narrative. The reminiscences with the painting of Filippo Angeli are evident, but above all the similarities with Domenico Gargiulo, known as Micco Spadaro, distinguished by elegant and precious chromatic accords, and with some references to Roman painting of the early seventeenth century. In the work, in fact, references to Roman and Neapolitan classicism are observed, with the bright and bright palette that we can trace back to the painter's mature works. The painting depicts, in a mountainous river landscape, in front of a large ancient building that stands on a rock, the birth of Christ with Joseph and Mary, surrounded by numerous shepherds who have come to honor the sacred event. On the right in the foreground a multitude of other figures, some of which indicate the birth of Messiah with their hands. From the top of a blue sky a luminous glow that pierces the clouds gives way to a crowd of flying angels who spread rays of light; this glow, directed towards a small group of figures, serves to immortalize a very interesting detail, that is the apparition of the angel to the shepherds (Luke II, 8-14) to announce to them the birth of the Savior. "... here I announce to you a great joy, which will be of all the people: today a savior, who is Christ the Lord, was born to you in the city of David. This is the sign for you: you will find a child wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger ". The bright and clear colorism of the work in question is typical of Neapolitan painting...
