Twelve Inches ruler desk lighter designed by Dunhill. Very unusual and stunning desk petrol lighter, designed by Dunhill back in the 1950. This mechanical lighter has been crafted in West Germany in the shape of a 12 inches ruler, made up in steel with high polished chrome plating. Weight: 262.6 Grams, (168.34 Dwt). Measurements: 327 mm by 39 mm (12.88 x 1.54 Inches). Hallmarks: Stamped with the maker's mark and signed, "Dunhill MADE IN WEST GERMANY". Alfred Dunhill inherited his father’s London saddlery in 1893. Following the increase in motor car ownership, Alfred developed the business to include motoring accessories, which he called ‘Dunhill’s Motorities’. This included goggles, timepieces, picnic sets, and leather coats, and it wasn’t long before the brand became associated with men’s general motoring attire. They opened two shops in Mayfair and had a catalogue of over 1300 items. Between the 1904 and 1905, Dunhill introduced their ‘Windshield Pipe’, to help drivers combat the effect of wind and travel on their ability to smoke. This marked both the end of the ‘motorities’ focus and their entry into the world of smoking ephemera, and they shortly opened their first tobacconist in 1907 on Duke Street. The proximity to several esteemed Private Members Clubs around the Mayfair, St James’ area ensured that the venture was a success. (From Nicholas Wells With Thanks). Superb Art Deco Japanese lacquer and chromed metal decorative box designed by Namiki for Alfred Dunhill, circa 1930s. Geometric shape with chrome sides. Main body in made of black lacquer on the outside and red lacquer on the inside with removable divider. Lid is beautifully decorated with typical Namiki Maki-e design of bird and cherry blossom. Marked underside: Alfred Dunhill - made in Japan. This outstanding and extremely rare piece was probably a nibs storage box. Very good vintage condition. The discovery of the art of lacquer decoration dates back to around 9,000 years ago. Japanese craftsmen found that the sap of the Rhus tree formed a hard and durable material that could be used like paint when wet, but became highly resistant to wear, water and light when dry. Mixed with pigments, vibrant fade-resistant colors could be made, and the colorless resin could also be used as an agent to bond gold and silver powder to an item, adding an extra special level of decoration. Ryosuke Namiki (1880-1954) founded the Namiki Manufacturing Co in 1918, producing pens and writing equipments. Popular in Japan but unable to sell his creation abroad, Namiki decided to showcase his finely decorated and expensive products around the world in 1925, attracting prestigious retailers such as Asprey and Cartier and, in 1927, Dunhill. Clement Court, manager of Dunhill’s Paris shop was so taken with the pens that he decided to market them under the joint names of "Dunhill Namiki...

Rare iconic English Art Deco Henry Howell & Co Ltd, YZ bird novelty match holder, striker, ashtray, dating from the 1920s-1930s for Alfred Dunhill Ltd. The ultimate in grotesque, a stumpy plump pelican bird with an outrageous Mohican hairstyle! This funny standing bird has a carved Macassar ebony wood body with a cherry red amber Bakelite beak and glass eyes. A circular shagreen striking panel to one side, and with the head having 18 holes for storing matches. The large feet of the pelican are holding a cherry red amber Bakelite or Faturan ashtray. When a torch is placed close to the beak to highlight it, the color is a beautiful translucent cherry red. YZ trade mark stamped underside with ref number and "Made in England". Good vintage condition. Measurements: 5.32 in. wide (13.5 cm) x 3.13 in. deep (8 cm) x 5.50 in. high (14 cm). About the designer: The YZ-branded range of novelties was produced by Henry Howell and Company Ltd, and they were sold by Alfred Dunhill Ltd, well-known for their high-quality desk and smoking accessories.
