A charming miniature library timepiece in a very attractive satinwood case. The eight day single fusee movement with anchor escapement and a heavy lenticular bob pendulum with overslung adjustment and hold fast, is housed in a very attractive five glass case, with very thick bevelled glass panels to the sides and top. The base of the case with carved floral detail and ogee sides. John Bennett was second generation clock and watchmaker, who established a shop at 65 Cheapside, London. An entrepreneur in the turn of the 19th century spirit he advertised heavily siting his many achievements in a manner that would strike us as somewhat boastful today: watchmaker to the Queen, clockmaker to the Royal Observatory etc. He was Knighted in the 1870’s and was a prominent figure in London Politics, the business continued to trade until 1920 when the distinction shop front with it’s automaton figures of Gog and Magog...

Small mahogany mantel clock by Webster, London Break arch case with applied carved decoration resting on a shaped stepped plinth and standing on four brass ball feet. Brass bezel opening to the silvered dial with Roman numerals, original ‘blued’ steel hands signed Webster, Queen Victoria Street, London. A rare and pristine museum-quality antique bottle vase by John Bennett of New York, NY offers art pottery construction in bulbous bottle form with hand painted floral decoration and lid (very unusual to have the lid), artist signed and dated 1878 on base as photographed, 19th century. Measures- 8.5''H x 4''W x 4''D Historical Note: John Bennett (1840-1907) was a British ceramic artist who spent much of his career in America. He is known for decorative glazed earthenware with natural motifs. Bennett came from Burslem, Staffordshire.[1] In the 1870s, he was the director of the "Lambeth faience", that is, "art" stoneware, department at Doulton & Co. in London.[2] Around 1876, he immigrated to America and started his own ceramic business in New York City.[2] His work soon became sought-after for its high quality and painterly style.[3] He closed the New York business in 1882 and retired to a farm in West Orange, New Jersey, in part to spend more time with his family.[2] Pottery that he made at the farm is stamped "W. Orange - N.J.".[2] He also turned to painting and sketching and gave private art classes.[2] Bennett's pieces of glazed earthenware include vases and plates, often decorated with highly colored, asymmetrical designs of flowers and other motifs from nature.
